APS/AIP Science and Technology Postdoctoral Policy Fellowship at U.S. Department of Education

Overview
APS and AIP are coordinating with the Office of Planning, Evaluation, and Policy Development (OPEPD) in the Department of Education (ED) to host a Ph.D. level scientist interested in working on a variety of policy initiatives and research projects. OPEPD is responsible for the coordination and development of major policy initiatives and the Department’s annual budget request, working in close collaboration with staff across the Department, with the White House, with Congress, and with external stakeholders to craft policies that will best realize the President’s goals of closing the achievement gap and making the United States first in the world in college completion by 2020.

Fellows may be asked to:
  • Conduct research analysis and develop metrics to assess the impact of various Department initiatives, and to explore emerging Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) issues in P-12 education, higher education, career and technical/vocational/adult education, or STEM teacher preparation and support.
  • Identify and build-out new ways for the Department to deepen its impact in the STEM fields, including partnerships with other federal agencies, state and local governments and the private sector.
  • Coordinate inter-agency efforts to achieve the Department’s policy goals as defined by the Committee on STEM Education 5-year Federal Strategic Plan.
  • Develop policy priorities for newly proposed programs such as the STEM Innovation Networks.
  • Perform legislative research and attend Congressional hearings, briefings, and other events on the Department’s behalf.

Criteria for Participation
  • Hold a doctoral level degree (Ph.D.) in a field of Physics (e.g. Theoretical or Experimental Physics, Physics Education Research, Biophysics, or any of the other physical sciences represented by the AIP Member Societies) with a preference for Physics Education Research
Note: Ideally, all requirements for the degree would be completed prior to September 2013
  • Have solid scientific and technical credentials and the endorsement of three references.
  • Show a commitment to serve society.
  • Exhibit outstanding communications skills and demonstrated ability to craft policy papers, decision memos, talking points and program proposals on complex education issues for diverse audiences, including non-scientific audiences.
  • Demonstrate strong interpersonal skills and willingness to work with a wide range of individuals and offices at the Department and ability to be effective in large bureaucracies. 
  • Possess the ability to operate and execute with limited guidance and in ambiguous or novel circumstances; and ability to appropriately and effectively use informal authority when leading teams or projects.
  • Hold U.S. citizenship (dual citizenship is acceptable).
  • Federal employees are not eligible.
  • Candidates must have some familiarity with education policy and/or federal policy.

Term Instructor/Assistant/Associate Professor - Physics and STEM Program

The George Mason University, College of Science invites applications for a Term Instructor or Assistant/Associate Professor position to support the School of Physics, Astronomy and Computational Sciences (SPACS) as well as our STEM program. This is a 12-month instructional faculty position beginning in fall 2013 with the possibility of yearly renewal based on performance.

Responsibilities:

The selected candidate will teach physics courses in SPACS and also work with the STEM Accelerator program to increase undergraduate student's success from the time a student enters Mason until the time the student graduates and starts a career. As such, the selected applicant will have significant contact with students.

The position is split between teaching (2:2 load), advising students, coordination of tutoring, and developing and utilizing learning technology. The selected candidate will work closely with the College of Science STEM Accelerator program activities throughout the year including participation in summer institutes and camps, outreach to local high schools and community colleges, and participation in mentoring students in undergraduate research.

Qualifications:

Applicants should have a minimum of Ph.D. in physics, or related sciences; and teaching experience at the college level.

STEM Ed / Evaluation Manager, Connecticut Science Center


Job Title:                    STEM Education and Evaluation Manager

Job Purpose:             Work with the Science Center’s Program team on the development and evaluation of STEM-related programming for grades PreK-12 students and teachers

Reporting to:             Vice President of Programs


Primary Responsibilities
·         Participate in the development and implementation of Science/STEM-related educational programs for grade PreK-12 students
·         Participate in the development and implementation of Science/STEM-related professional development programs for grade PreK-12 teachers
·         Prepare evaluation plans including the design of evaluation protocols and instruments for collecting data to be used in assessing educational outcomes among student and teacher audiences, including case study work with CSC partner schools
·         Coordinate and execute evaluation plans associated with the above programs and projects including data collection, analysis and reporting
·         Manage the archiving of assessment data and relevant literature regarding informal and formal science/STEM learning and practices
·         Prepare summary reports and presentations and regularly report progress on educational program development and outcomes
·         Participate in state and national informal and formal science/STEM education and research/evaluation networks including, CSTA, CSSA, NSTA, ASTC, and NARST,
·         Coordinate with the Development Department to identify, write and prepare grant submissions to support the institutions STEM education initiatives with schools

Requirements
·         Advanced degree in education or science/STEM related field
·         Minimum 3-years of experience in classroom instruction, school administration or
      informal science/STEM education
·         Experience designing and conducting quantitative and qualitative research and
evaluation
·         Familiarity with Survey Monkey or similar on-line survey platforms
·         Experience with data management and protocols
·         Understanding of current research on informal and formal science education, especially
as it applies to grade PreK-12 students and teachers
·         Familiarity with State and National science and mathematics standards including the
Next Generation Science Standards and the Common Core State Standards preferred

The Eberly College of Arts and Sciences of West Virginia University seeks nominations and applications for the Eberly Professor of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Education. The start date is negotiable and can be as soon as January 2014. The tenure home will be in a department/program in the Eberly College (http://eberly.wvu.edu/); however, much of this position’s effort will be devoted toward growing the Flexible Education Research Network (FERN), a trans-disciplinary, STEM education initiative identified by the University as one of five areas for strategic investment. The initiative includes the Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources, the Davis College of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Design, and the College of Education and Human Services; over 70 faculty members have outreach, research, and funding in STEM education, and each college has designated resources, including current faculty time and planned new hires to FERN.
The appointment will be made at the full professor or advanced associate professor rank. A doctoral degree is required in a STEM or STEM-education related discipline, as well as a record of teaching and scholarship that would qualify the candidate for a tenured appointment in the home department as a full professor or advanced associate professor. Area of specialization is open, and the committee invites applications from persons with a track record in trans-disciplinary STEM education or broadening participation in STEM fields. Trans-disciplinary work blends approaches from multiple disciplines to address research questions. Applicants who have worked primarily within one discipline should provide evidence indicating potential for success at engaging with faculty in other disciplines. The position involves administrative leadership, teaching, and scholarship that will advance FERN’s research, education and outreach agenda. The percent of effort related to administration, teaching, and scholarship is negotiable and administrative support will be provided by an executive director to manage operations, as well as support staff. The Assistant Director will assist the Center's Director with the management of the STEM Center

Preference given to candidates who possess: Familiarity with the STEM-related economic needs of eastern North Carolina; web design/maintenance expertise; program evaluation experience; or, grant proposal preparation and administration experience. STEM/Health Experts, Florida Board of Governors

Florida Seeks: STEM/Health Experts

The State University System of Florida is a national leader in the delivery of STEM degree programs, and its strategic plan calls for doubling the number of STEM graduates by 2025. The Chancellor is seeking two senior leaders to guide the creation of the system's first-ever STEM and health strategic plan.

1. Special Advisor for STEM and Health Initiatives (One-year contract appointment; location negotiable)
The Special Advisor will collaborate with academic leadership at the system's 12 member institutions to oversee the development of a strategic plan for STEM and health programs. The plan will contemplate issues such as program development, enrollment projections, accrediting issues, communications initiatives, and system-wide and institutional goals that help ensure a positive return-on-investment for the State of Florida. The ideal candidate would be a seasoned leader (former provost, dean, etc.) from an institution with health and STEM programs and will have an earned doctorate and proven track record of experience in leading complex and highly coordinated strategic planning efforts. The Chancellor is looking for an individual who can easily move between "thinking and doing" - balancing an ability to offer advice while contributing to critical deliverables. The ideal candidate will be a master of collaboration and possess exceptional communication and interpersonal skills. The chosen candidate will be invited to negotiate regarding terms of employment such as length of contract (12 months maximum), working hours, base of location, compensation, etc.

2. Director of STEM and Health Initiatives (Permanent full-time position in Tallahassee, Fla.)
The Director will work closely with the Special Advisor for STEM and Health Initiatives (see description above) in the development of a strategic plan for STEM and health programs. The ideal candidate will have an earned doctorate and a proven track record of experience in strategic planning efforts, preferably in an academic setting. As a primary writer and editor of the plan, the ideal candidate will possess exceptional organizational and communication skills. This faculty member provides program and curricular oversight, management of affiliate faculty, student advising, and is responsible for ensuring that the secondary education programs are rigorous and of high quality.

Candidates must have experience teaching math or science in a secondary education setting within the past 7 years, experience teaching college level courses, and a PhD in Education or closely related field (ABD considered if completed within a year from hire).  Preference will be given to candidates with knowledge of and experience with secondary Teacher Preparation Programs, experience with and knowledge of STEM subjects and programs, a current teaching license, demonstrated success with curriculum development, and the ability to integrate instructional technology into learning activities.

Computer Science-STEM Education position at University of Nebraska Omaha

The College of Information Science and Technology (IS&T) is an interdisciplinary college focusing on meeting the needs of a vibrant metropolitan area.  The College invites applications for a STEM position within the college's computer science department. The position is open to all ranks. Candidates applying for this position should have a well-established, active and vigorous research program in any computing area with an emphasis on STEM education and research.  This mid-career faculty will have the experience to provide leadership in the college and the campus relating to STEM coupled with a strong research emphasis in computing related disciplines and in the pedagogical issues associated with STEM education in computing. The successful candidate will have completed a doctorate in computer science or affiliated disciplines and a demonstrated ability to generate external research and development grants.  Teaching experience and publication record must be commensurate with the rank sought. Contributions to service in the form of interactions with university, business, government agencies and professional organizations are expected and important requirements for this position. Qualified candidates will be considered for an endowed professorship.

 In addition to the computer science department, the college has two other units an Information Systems and Quantitative Analysis department and a School of Interdisciplinary Informatics. The College of IS&Ts academic program portfolio includes five undergraduate degree programs (Computer Science, Management Information Systems, Bioinformatics, Information Assurance, IT Innovation) and three Master of Science degree programs (Computer Science, Management Information Systems and Information Assurance). The college also hosts an innovative college-wide interdisciplinary PhD in Information Technology degree. Two graduate degrees in Biomedical Informatics are currently at the stages of approval. The college of IS&T has nearly 1,000 total students with 300 graduate students and 700 undergraduate students.

 The College of IS&T has nearly 60 full-time tenure track faculty/staff and an active research grants portfolio of $15 million with  funds from federal agencies (e.g., NSF, NIH, Dept of Ed),  state government (e.g., NRI, NSF EPSCoR, NU Foundation), a number of local and national corporations and foundations. The colleges interdisciplinary focus has resulted in a variety of collaborations with units across the University of Nebraska Omaha and the rest of the University of Nebraska system including the medical center and a number of private and public organizations.

RESPONSIBILITIES: The Assistant Professor reports to the Dean, School of Education. The candidate must be able to teach courses in STEM related subject areas (Mathematics and Science) and other required courses at the undergraduate level in the School of Education and collaborate on content related grant projects. Responsibilities include collaborating with current faculty, academic advising, scholarship, participating in ongoing re-accreditation efforts in related content and in creating and implementing policies according to the South Carolina Department of Education and Claflin University guidelines.

QUALIFICATIONS: The successful candidate should have a PH.D. or Ed.D., with a breadth of knowledge/experience in science education, mathematics education or a related field. A doctorate in a field of education that is closely related to the qualifications of this position, teaching experience in Science Education or Mathematics Education, and current knowledge of K-12 teaching and learning requirements are preferred. In addition, the successful candidate should be prepared with at least Masters level credentials to teach courses in STEM related subject areas.

SALARY: Commensurate with experience.
