Chester Zoo is one of the premier zoos in the UK attracting over 1.4million visitors/yr. It is renowned for its conservation work, excellent standards of animal welfare and its proactive and award winning Discovery and Learning Division. Currently around 30,000 students receive formal teaching by the division and over 300,000 visitors attend presenter talks delivered by the team.

We are looking to appoint a Head of Discovery & Learning to develop and deliver a suite of formal education and public engagement programmes, both in the zoo and as part of our field programmes. The purpose of these programmes is to maximise the zoo’s conservation impact by inspiring people to take action in support of the natural world. The role will also involve sharing best practice and promoting and growing Chester Zoo’s profile and reputation in the field of conservation education and conservation psychology.

The job holder will report to the Science and Education Director and be part of the zoo’s senior management team. They will be working closely with other divisions to develop, evaluate and improve the effectiveness of our exhibits, animal and plant collection and the visitor experience. They will also be responsible for managing a team of 17 staff, associated facilities and budgets and will be expected to optimise the use of these resources and the revenue generating activities of the division.

The successful candidate should ideally have a Masters level degree or above in Education/Psychology with an emphasis on conservation and environmental issues. Extensive experience in developing, delivering and evaluating educational and behavioural change programmes to a variety of audiences will be required.
 
Experience in successful exhibit design and knowledge of the key factors that impact visitor engagement and learning is important. An in-depth knowledge of zoos and their operation would be advantageous. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential, along with the ability to influence and work in a multidisciplinary team with collaborative working practices.
 
The role is full time, 40 hours per week.

Postdoctoral Fellowship @ University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg

Call for Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowship Applications 2013/2014


The University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg is a research intensive university ranked in the top 250 global universities (http://www.wits.ac.za/).  It is the home of 15 NRF A-rated researchers and six Centres of Excellence.  Situated in the financial heartland of South Africa and indeed Africa, the University is both cosmopolitan and vibrant.  It offers excellent opportunities for Postdoctoral Research Fellows to undertake cutting edge research.  The AW Mellon Foundation has kindly agreed to support up to seven Postdoctoral Research Fellowships in the Faculty of Humanities at Wits during 2013/2014/2015.  The Fellowships are open to all candidates who have completed their PhD degrees in 2008 or before.

The selection of candidates will be based upon the merit of the proposal submitted and the strength of their CVs.

Areas of Research: Any research in the general field of humanities and social science will be considered.  The candidate will need to slot into one of the following Schools[1]Arts; Education; Human and Community Development; Literature, Language and Media; Social Sciences and the Law.

Value of the Fellowship

R10 = $1 US
The value of the Fellowship is R 180 0000 per annum tax free which is sufficient to cover living expenses including accommodation costs. Also included in the Fellowship are contributions towards
·        Research costs – R 20 000,
·        Medical insurance - R 15 720,
·        Once-off relocation costs - R 10 000.

Period of the Fellowship

The period of the Postdoctoral Fellowship is two years renewable annually depending on the candidate’s research performance.

STEM Ed / Evaluation Manager, Connecticut Science Center


Job Title:                    STEM Education and Evaluation Manager

Job Purpose:             Work with the Science Center’s Program team on the development and evaluation of STEM-related programming for grades PreK-12 students and teachers

Reporting to:             Vice President of Programs


Primary Responsibilities
·         Participate in the development and implementation of Science/STEM-related educational programs for grade PreK-12 students
·         Participate in the development and implementation of Science/STEM-related professional development programs for grade PreK-12 teachers
·         Prepare evaluation plans including the design of evaluation protocols and instruments for collecting data to be used in assessing educational outcomes among student and teacher audiences, including case study work with CSC partner schools
·         Coordinate and execute evaluation plans associated with the above programs and projects including data collection, analysis and reporting
·         Manage the archiving of assessment data and relevant literature regarding informal and formal science/STEM learning and practices
·         Prepare summary reports and presentations and regularly report progress on educational program development and outcomes
·         Participate in state and national informal and formal science/STEM education and research/evaluation networks including, CSTA, CSSA, NSTA, ASTC, and NARST,
·         Coordinate with the Development Department to identify, write and prepare grant submissions to support the institutions STEM education initiatives with schools

Requirements
·         Advanced degree in education or science/STEM related field
·         Minimum 3-years of experience in classroom instruction, school administration or
      informal science/STEM education
·         Experience designing and conducting quantitative and qualitative research and
evaluation
·         Familiarity with Survey Monkey or similar on-line survey platforms
·         Experience with data management and protocols
·         Understanding of current research on informal and formal science education, especially
as it applies to grade PreK-12 students and teachers
·         Familiarity with State and National science and mathematics standards including the
Next Generation Science Standards and the Common Core State Standards preferred
·         Strong presentation and communication skills
·         Demonstrated ability to manage and supervise staff and subcontracts
·         Previous grant-writing experience preferred
·         Ability to work effectively as part of a comprehensive program team

Tenured/Full Professor of STEM Ed, West Virginia U

The Eberly College of Arts and Sciences of West Virginia University seeks nominations and applications for the Eberly Professor of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Education.The tenure home will be in an Eberly department/program at the full or advanced associate professor rank.
The Eberly College of Arts and Sciences of West Virginia University seeks nominations and applications for the Eberly Professor of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Education. The start date is negotiable and can be as soon as January 2014. The tenure home will be in a department/program in the Eberly College (http://eberly.wvu.edu/); however, much of this position’s effort will be devoted toward growing the Flexible Education Research Network (FERN), a trans-disciplinary, STEM education initiative identified by the University as one of five areas for strategic investment. The initiative includes the Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources, the Davis College of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Design, and the College of Education and Human Services; over 70 faculty members have outreach, research, and funding in STEM education, and each college has designated resources, including current faculty time and planned new hires to FERN.
The appointment will be made at the full professor or advanced associate professor rank. A doctoral degree is required in a STEM or STEM-education related discipline, as well as a record of teaching and scholarship that would qualify the candidate for a tenured appointment in the home department as a full professor or advanced associate professor. Area of specialization is open, and the committee invites applications from persons with a track record in trans-disciplinary STEM education or broadening participation in STEM fields. Trans-disciplinary work blends approaches from multiple disciplines to address research questions. Applicants who have worked primarily within one discipline should provide evidence indicating potential for success at engaging with faculty in other disciplines. The position involves administrative leadership, teaching, and scholarship that will advance FERN’s research, education and outreach agenda. The percent of effort related to administration, teaching, and scholarship is negotiable and administrative support will be provided by an executive director to manage operations, as well as support staff. The position includes significant service and leadership responsibilities, including: mentoring other STEM education faculty members; leading collaborative, trans-disciplinary research projects across departmental and college boundaries; and strategizing to identify priority areas, build coalitions, and move a research agenda forward. The successful applicant will communicate with many types of audiences, using a variety of media, in order to promote the importance of trans-disciplinary collaboration to broaden participation in STEM.

TT Chair, Dept of Education/STEM Education Initiative, Belmont Univ TN (Science Education position announced too)

Applications are being sought for the Education Department Chair in the College of Arts and Sciences at Belmont University. The Chair is charged to provide visionary leadership in developing, implementing, and evaluating the goals of the Department of Education consistent with the mission and vision of the University. The College is pursuing a multi-pronged STEM Education Initiative involving the Department of Education, departments in the School of Sciences, and faculty in other areas in the College. Searches are also commencing for a Math Education faculty member and a Science Education faculty member to support this initiative. The STEM initiative is expected to lead to enrollment growth in Belmonts education programs, increased connections with area schools, and expanded community/industry linkages.

The new Education Department Chair, along with other duties, will be the leader of our undergraduate and graduate education programs, will manage our assessment/accreditation efforts, and will lead our STEM Education Initiative. The position is a 12-month, tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor. The position will be open until filled and review of applications will begin immediately.

TT in Secondary Education, Kutztown Univ of PA

The Department of Secondary Education at Kutztown University invites applications for a tenure-track, full-time position beginning in August 2013. 
 
Requirements: a Doctorate in an appropriate subject area (preferably science education), a teaching certificate in any of the secondary school science disciplines, and teaching experience in U.S. schools with a minimum of five years of classroom teaching experience in a middle school or high school setting.

The Department of Science, Technology, Engineering, & Mathematics Education at NC State University seeks an innovative, influential department head with a strong vision of science, technology, engineering, & mathematics education in the 21st century. The STEM Ed. Department Head reports to the Dean of the College and is responsible for the administration of the department. He or she provides leadership in support of faculty research, teaching, and service efforts; recruits, hires, and supervises faculty and staff; manages departmental budgets; and promotes the department through representation in college, university, and external strategic initiatives. She or he may also engage in research, teaching, publication, externally funded projects, and other professional activities.

Candidates should possess a doctorate in mathematics education, science education, technology education or a closely related field. Experience in teacher education, K-12 schools and outreach, funding agencies, and university administration is desirable.
