Project Coordinator for the Connecticut Digital Newspaper Project - Connecticut State Library, Hartford

Project Coordinator for the Connecticut Digital Newspaper Project - Connecticut State Library, Hartford. A project coordinator, to be based out of the Connecticut State Library, is sought to supervise the Connecticut Digital Newspaper Project a project funded by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) to digitize 100,000 pages of microfilmed Connecticut newspapers. This is a 35 hour per week, contracted position, with modest travel required within Connecticut and annual trips to Washington D.C. Ideally, the start date is November 1, 2013 and the position will continue through September 30, 2015. Compensation will depend upon experience and level of involvement and compensation shall not exceed $140,000 over 22 months. Benefits are not included. Under the direction of the Project Co-Director (Jane F. Cullinane) the Project Coordinator will: Manage project staff and coordinate project workflow; Train and supervise Project Library Technical Assistant; Develop and document procedures and oversee selection, digitization, metadata capture, OCR, workflow control, quality control and related activities; Develop and maintain tracking system for microfilm and deliverables; Work with vendors to ensure high quality deliverables; Confirm bibliographic completeness and perform technical analysis of microfilm; Validate scanned images and metadata; Work with Project Cataloger and the Serials Librarian to maintain project database; Work with Project Co-Director as project spokesperson and participate in publicity efforts, such as the website, blogging and representing the project at meetings; Work with Project Co-Director to manage project budget; Deliver progress reports on specified semi-annual schedule; Other duties as assigned. Required Experience and Qualifications: Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited school or foreign equivalent; At least 3 years of relevant experience; Solid understanding of digitization and/or conversion projects; Experience with XML and standard metadata schemas (non-MARC and MARC) and principles governing standards in digital libraries; Experience with quality control of digital projects; Project management experience; Must have a valid driver’s license. Desirable Experience and Qualifications: Knowledge of microfilming procedures, especially newspaper microfilming; Knowledge of newspapers or serials, and ability to assess complex relationships between titles; Demonstrated ability to pay attention to detail; Equally important are strong interpersonal and oral and written communication skills, the ability to analyze and solve problems; the ability to work with a variety of people; flexibility and willingness to shift priorities according to current needs. Librarian & Curator of Manuscripts - New Haven Museum. The New Haven Museum seeks an innovative professional with demonstrated experience in library administration and collections management to lead the Whitney Library, a significant research facility that supports and enhances the Museum’s role as the repository of the City’s history. This motivated, public-minded individual will improve intellectual and physical access to the Library’s holdings and work collaboratively to connect with the Museum’s artifact and photograph collections. She or he will have direct responsibility for the planning and implementation of the automation of the Whitney Library’s catalogs and for moving finding aids online. This position reports to the Museum’s Executive Director and is supported by two paraprofessionals. Responsibilities: 1) Manages the bibliographic collection, including acquisitions and cataloguing of books, broadsides, maps, architectural drawings, and other special collections, using currently accepted cataloguing standards (AACR2, LCSH, LC Classification). 2) Develops and manages the archival collection, including donor relations, acquisitions, manuscript processing, and creation of finding aids for the collections. 3) Provides library and archival reference service in person, by telephone, e-mail, or post. 4) Provides bibliographic instruction to students and other groups and engages in outreach activities as appropriate. 5) Organizes and prepares programs for the Whitney Library Associates, a museum affinity group, and serves as the staff liaison to the Library Committee. 6) Organizes exhibits on local history from the Library’s collection; contributes ideas and materials toward the planning, development, and implementation of the Museum’s exhibitions. 7) As a department head, supports planning, security, conservation and day-to-day operation of the Museum. 8) Conducts research and provides support for grant proposals related to the preservation, care, and management of the library and archival collections, and manages grant-funded projects. 9) Undertakes special projects as required. Qualifications: 1) M.L.S. from an ALA-accredited program, with archival experience and/or training. 2) Three to five years of experience as a librarian in an academic, research, or public library. 3) Demonstrated knowledge of library and archival management systems including: experience with OCLC and an online cataloging system in a special collections environment, experience using currently accepted cataloguing standards (AACR2, LCSH, LC Classification), and experience using DACS, EAD, and MARC. 4) Excellent written and oral communication skills, organizational skills, and attention to detail. 5) Computer and Internet literacy. 6) Understanding of social media and its use in promoting greater access to library collections. 7) Supervisory experience. 8) Knowledge of Connecticut or New England history. 9) Experience in cultural and educational organizations. Library Project Staff (Temporary) - The Donohue Group, Inc. (DGI) has immediate full-time contract positions available (37.5 hours/week) for a cataloging/barcoding project in a university library (New Haven, CT). Project is already underway, and is anticipated to continue until at least July 2013. Hours of operation are Monday-Friday between 8:30am and 5:00pm. Duties: Searching library databases for bibliographic MARC record to match item in hand; affixing barcodes; adding holdings and item records. DGI will provide some training. Experienced assistants will also create brief MARC records with the use of templates. Qualifications: Candidates must have recent MARC cataloging work experience. Job requires extreme attention to detail, a willingness to ask questions, and the ability to adapt to changing project specifications. Productivity and accuracy will be monitored and must be maintained. Successful candidates will work well in a team environment, be able to get up to speed quickly and be able to navigate smoothly through various software programs. Candidates able to commit to the full project timeline will be given preference. Salary level: $12.00 to $18.00 per hour, depending on experience. Candidates with significant cataloging experience will be considered for the upper end of the salary range. Positions are eligible for some company benefits after 90 days. Multimedia Archivist - Knights of Columbus

Responsibilities include: Maintaining digital archives of photographs, and AV material. Digitizing material not yet in that format, as well as arrangement, description and preservation of the original material. Consolidating photo/AV archival material from various departments in house. Maintaining a searchable multimedia database. Must be able to coordinate with various in house departments and external vendors on deadline oriented projects. Library Assistant - John P. Webster Library

Library Assistant - The John P. Webster Library of the First Church of Christ Congregational, UCC, West Hartford, is looking for part-time library assistant. The JPW Library has a religious and secular collection of over 7,000 resources and is open to the public. This position reports to the Library Director and is responsible for a wide variety of library technical support, including circulation using an automated system, cataloging, Interlibrary Loan (holdings on ReQuest), providing story-time to preschoolers and assisting with other library programs and services including the church archives. The successful candidate must be enthusiastic, have excellent customer service skills to serve the church community as well as the public, have the ability to handle diverse responsibilities and have relevant library experience. This is a non-exempt, 52 week, approximately 24 hours per week position. The work schedule is: 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Monday-Thursday and one Sunday morning (9:00 a.m. – noon) per month. Additional evening and weekend hours may be required for special programs. State Library Division Head - Connecticut State Library

State Library Division Head - State of Connecticut, Connecticut State Library. Open To: Public (no exam necessary). Location: 231 Capitol Ave, Hartford CT. Schedule: Full Time, Monday through Friday. Hours: 8 hour days; 40 hour workweek. Salary: $88,505 new state employees (MP67). Closing Date: May 13, 2012. PURPOSE OF CLASS: In the State Library, this class directs and coordinates the administration of all operations of the Division of Library Development. SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Works under the general direction of the State Librarian. SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Supervises a medium number of professional technical and clerical staff of the assigned division. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: Supervises and coordinates the operations of and services rendered by the Division of Library Development; conducts work flow studies and operational analyses; makes policy recommendations at the division level; coordinates the implementation of division reorganizations; implements program revisions; directs special projects; makes budget recommendations; supervises statewide programs of division structures; conducts management training; supervises and evaluates division staff; does related duties as required. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY: Extensive knowledge of modern principles of library science; established administrative ability; established supervisory ability. Knowledge of information content delivery in an electronic environment; Knowledge of state government, the processes of policy and legislation, and of the relationships of state government to the public, and to local government; Knowledge of public library services, administration, and standards, including current developments, trends and problems; Knowledge of budgeting, public library finance, grant proposals, and applicable federal and state law; Comprehensive knowledge of library administration and practice, current developments and trends; Demonstrated commitment to public service; Ability to provide and oversee consulting in best management and librarianship practices; Ability to develop and build partnerships with agencies and groups at the local, state, and national level ; Ability to be a leader in statewide library development; Skill in working with various library organizations and governance structures; Ability to manage statewide library programs such as Connecticar, Connecticard, and iCONN; Ability to exercise independent judgment and to maintain confidential integrity as required; Ability to actively participate in national and regional library development activities and organizations; Skill in managing personnel, including use of appraisal systems; progressive discipline; developing professional and technical staff; and maximizing creativity and participation of staff in decision making; Skill in managing fiscal resources, including developing budgets, monitoring expenditures within a budget, planning and supervising federal and state funds used for programs; Skill in planning, setting goals and objectives, coordination of implementing programs, and using outcomes based evaluation ; and Ability to communicate effectively and clearly in writing and orally. EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: General Experience: A Master's degree in library science or information science from a library school accredited by the American Library Association and five (5) years of post graduate degree experience in professional library work.
