Curator






A POSITION HAS OPENED UP IN THE ANIMAL DEPARTMENT FOR A CURATOR

The successful candidate must be a South African citizen, must be in possession of a valid driver’s licence as well as a competency certificate for rifle use. Be fully bilingual in English and Afrikaans. Be computer literate and have previous management experience.

Experience with hand raising for various species, able to work with snakes, as well as operant conditioning on animals is preferred but not required.

Must be available for shift work and every other weekend.

Duties will include but not be limited to;

  • Constructive supervision of all the daily functions of the department
  • Designation of subordinates responsibility
  • Drafting and revising of time management, rosters, protocols and routinely schedule staff
  • Maintaining a neat and hygienic condition of all holding enclosures
  • Monitoring daily health, well-being and condition of all animals in section
  • Assist with hand rearing
  • Data capture and maintenance of record systems relevant to area responsibility
  • Research and implementation of the dietary, environmental and behavioural requirements for appropriate and effective display of holding various species in section
  • Maintenance, planning and landscaping of exhibits and holding enclosure in section
  • Implement a management plan for enrichment and operant conditioning of appropriate target species
  • Maintain the medicine supplies and consumption registers
  • Keep crates and animal capture equipment clean and stored correctly
  • Be contactable at all times

CURATOR – AFRICAN SAVANNAH & CANADIAN WILDS
Accountable to the General Curator, the Area Curator is responsible for the daily management of the animals, personnel, facilities and programs of the area. The successful candidate will be required to manage areas that may include primarily mammals, but also some birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish and invertebrates.
Responsibilities:
  • Oversee animal handling events, including animal shipments.
  • Assist in the planning and coordination of standard operating procedures.
  • Assist in planning and implementation of special projects, minor renovations and improvements in the section.
  • Ensures compliance with standard operating procedures and ensures the standard operating procedures are conducive to maintaining the highest possible standards of human health and safety and animal welfare in line with known best practice.
  • Interview and train employees: plan, assign and direct work: appraise performance: manage employees; address complaints and resolve problems; ensuring compliance with union contract.
  • Works with other departments to help develop, plan and implement educational programs, publicity, graphics and other support services for the section.
  • Initiates necessary requests for maintenance and horticultural work within the section.
  • Acts as a liaison with the veterinary team to coordinate animal treatments, exams and the preventative medicine program.
  • Acts as zone manager in other areas when other managers are away.
  • Works with Animal Management team to ensure animal exhibits and enclosures meet or exceed minimum AZA & CAZA accreditation standards.
·         Reviews and updates animal management/husbandry protocols ensuring established husbandry standards are met.
·         Ensures accurate, current records are kept on each animal and exhibit.
·         Coordinates behind the scenes tours, after hour’s events and animal treatments.
·         Manages budget in consultation with General Curator.
·         Participates in collection planning and exhibit development.
·         Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
  • Minimum of 7 years of animal management experience preferably in an accredited institution
  • 5 years of experience in direct staff supervision.  Experience managing a unionized workforce would be considered an asset.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Zoology, Ecology or related field.
  • Must be able to establish and maintain an effective rapport with all levels of management, employees and park guests.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Must have good observational skills.
  • Some computer skills in MS office.
  • Possess or able to acquire a Class 5 Alberta drivers license

Physical Demands: 
  • Involves outdoor work and heavy lifting.
  • Must be able to walk, stand, sit, kneel, stoop, crawl, twist, reach above head, pull, bend, climb. stairs and ladders, and carry up to 50lbs.
  • Exposure to fauna and pungent odours.
  • Must be able to work in inclement weather.
  • Working on weekends and statutory holidays will be required.

    General Manager/Curator
    Salary £23,500 per annum

    Blue Reef Aquarium is a leading visitor attraction based in Newquay and is now recruiting for a General Manager/Curator. 

    Forming part of the Senior Management Team you will report to the UK Director.  To meet the business needs we are looking for an experienced Curator with General Management skills.  The successful candidate will play a key role in the day to day running of the Zoological Department   as well as in the strategic development, business success and daily operation of the attraction.  

    For this role we require someone who can combine their Curator experience with General Management knowledge and experience.  You must be an excellent all round communicator, able to build and capitalise on a wide network of contacts externally, while motivating and managing teams internally.  This position would suit a candidate with an entrepreneurial outlook and excellent management skills. 

    The successful candidate will have a good understanding of the crucial role of marketing and ability to develop and employ creative selling techniques.  Attention to detail is also essential as well as financial literacy with proven ability to produce/manage budgets and business plans effectively. 

    Having an entrepreneurial outlook you will have the skills to grow existing revenue streams as well as growing new revenue streams, whilst focusing on the bottom line with the ability to maximise quality and profitability of business.

    This is a full time post which involves working 5 days a week and often includes working weekends and Bank Holidays.

    Librarian & Curator of Manuscripts - New Haven Museum

    Librarian & Curator of Manuscripts - New Haven Museum. The New Haven Museum seeks an innovative professional with demonstrated experience in library administration and collections management to lead the Whitney Library, a significant research facility that supports and enhances the Museum’s role as the repository of the City’s history. This motivated, public-minded individual will improve intellectual and physical access to the Library’s holdings and work collaboratively to connect with the Museum’s artifact and photograph collections. She or he will have direct responsibility for the planning and implementation of the automation of the Whitney Library’s catalogs and for moving finding aids online. This position reports to the Museum’s Executive Director and is supported by two paraprofessionals. Responsibilities: 1) Manages the bibliographic collection, including acquisitions and cataloguing of books, broadsides, maps, architectural drawings, and other special collections, using currently accepted cataloguing standards (AACR2, LCSH, LC Classification). 2) Develops and manages the archival collection, including donor relations, acquisitions, manuscript processing, and creation of finding aids for the collections. 3) Provides library and archival reference service in person, by telephone, e-mail, or post. 4) Provides bibliographic instruction to students and other groups and engages in outreach activities as appropriate. 5) Organizes and prepares programs for the Whitney Library Associates, a museum affinity group, and serves as the staff liaison to the Library Committee. 6) Organizes exhibits on local history from the Library’s collection; contributes ideas and materials toward the planning, development, and implementation of the Museum’s exhibitions. 7) As a department head, supports planning, security, conservation and day-to-day operation of the Museum. 8) Conducts research and provides support for grant proposals related to the preservation, care, and management of the library and archival collections, and manages grant-funded projects. 9) Undertakes special projects as required. Qualifications: 1) M.L.S. from an ALA-accredited program, with archival experience and/or training. 2) Three to five years of experience as a librarian in an academic, research, or public library. 3) Demonstrated knowledge of library and archival management systems including: experience with OCLC and an online cataloging system in a special collections environment, experience using currently accepted cataloguing standards (AACR2, LCSH, LC Classification), and experience using DACS, EAD, and MARC. 4) Excellent written and oral communication skills, organizational skills, and attention to detail. 5) Computer and Internet literacy. 6) Understanding of social media and its use in promoting greater access to library collections. 7) Supervisory experience. 8) Knowledge of Connecticut or New England history. 9) Experience in cultural and educational organizations. Additional requirements: Must be able to climb stairs and stepstools, move and lift books and boxes in excess of 30 pounds, wheel carts, sit at a computer for extended periods, and tolerate dust and odors associated with collection activities.     Curator of Human Rights Collections - The University of Connecticut Libraries seeks a Curator of Human Rights Collections, a University Librarian II or III (UCP 7 or 9). Job Summary: Working in a team environment, the Curator of Human Rights performs curatorial work in support of Archives & Special Collections programs in the collecting area of Human Rights. Following established departmental procedures the curator acquires and processes archival collections and works closely with donors and potential donors. S/he works in close cooperation with other Curators, the Team Leader and subject Librarians to plan and establish area goals and to ensure that established collection and public service goals are met. The curator serves as primary contact to the Human Rights Institute. The curator provides in-person and written reference services and responds to requests to use human rights collections and materials, including determining access and intellectual property rights relating to access.
