Astrocamp Instructor

Instructor – School Year Position

We are currently hiring instructors for the School Year, beginning January 3, 2014 and ending May 23, 2014 with opportunities to work future seasons as well. Astrocamp is a unique non-profit education center that specializes in astronomy and physical sciences. Located on a forested campus near the town of Idyllwild at an elevation of 5,600 feet amidst the beautiful San Jacinto Mountains of Southern California. Over 16,000 students from 8-14 years old attend Astrocamp each year. With excellent teaching facilities we bring science to life through hands-on, experiential classes and activities. Our labs and facilities include an Olympic sized pool; extensive ropes course and rock wall, innovative classrooms, and two state of the art telescope viewing areas with CCD capabilities. Salary and Benefits: Starting at $55 per day, plus Room and Board. Staff live on-site in partially furnished group apartments and all meals are provided in the dining hall. Staff are not required to supervise students in the dorms. Health insurance after six months of employment, and training is fully paid. Astrocamp is located on a 90-acre campus adjacent to a national forest with easy access to world-class rock climbing, outstanding hiking, and great mountain biking.

1-year Position at Berea College, KY

The Physics Program at Berea College invites applications for a one-year position at the Assistant Professor level to begin August 2014. The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. in physics, be an experimentalist, possess a strong commitment to undergraduate liberal arts education, and be skilled in the ability to actively engage undergraduate students in research. Previous college-level teaching experience is strongly preferred. Teaching responsibilities may include a variety of undergraduate physics courses at all levels of the curriculum as well as contributions to the General Education Program of the College.

The Physics Program includes three full-time faculty members, is home to the 3-2 Pre-Engineering program, and graduates an average of three physics majors per year. The faculty at Berea College is dedicated to excellent undergraduate teaching and robust research, particularly with students. Facilities include an x-ray diffraction lab, Mössbauer spectrometer, time-of-flight mass spectrometer, magnetometer, and fully equipped labs for both optics and electronics.

Traveling Archivist - Connecticut State Library

Traveling Archivist - Connecticut State Library. This is a part-time, grant funded, contracted position based out of the Connecticut State Library. Reporting to the Project Director, the Traveling Archivist is part of a National Historical Publications and Records Commission [NHPRC] SNAP grant project intended to encourage best practices in the management, arrangement, preservation, and access of archival collections held in museums, historical societies, archives and libraries in the state. The Traveling Archivist will be responsible for conducting half-day site visits throughout the state as well as attending a 3-part workshop series on archival management and arrangement. Key duties and responsibilities: assist in promoting the Traveling Archivist Program; assist in reviewing applications, selecting participants and arranging site visits; conduct 34 half-day on-site visits to instruct institutional staff and volunteers in archival best practices, including management, arrangement, description, preservation and access; assist in the creation of forms and hand-outs to aid institutions after the site visit to continue to be able to implement the recommendations made by the Traveling Archivist; prepare a written report for each site visit; conduct a three month follow-up via phone/email; and prepare a final summary report on site visits. Qualifications: bachelors or master’s degree in Library/Archival Science, Public History, or other related field; strong knowledge of archival principles and practices; knowledge and familiarity of mid-size and emerging cultural heritage institutions; a working knowledge of the operations of collecting institutions, understanding of collections preservation standards; experience in providing training in archival practices; minimum 3-5 years professional experience required; excellent written and verbal communication skills; demonstrated project management skills; proficient computer skills required (Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel); in-state travel required; must have a car. The start date is January 1, 2014. The grant funding currently in place is scheduled to end June 30, 2014, although an extension to June 30, 2015 will be sought and is expected. 1-year FT at Salem State MA

The department of chemistry and physics seeks a full-time temporary faculty member to teach introductory physics courses for the 2014/2015 academic year. Teaching assignments include introductory physics lectures and laboratories to meet departmental instructional needs. The position is subject to available funding.
The candidate will be responsible for 12 credit hours of instruction in a combination of lecture and laboratory sections as well as academic advising duties. The candidate is also expected to be active in scholarship and in the college community.
Required qualifications include (1) PhD or ABD with significant progress in Physics or a closely related field; and (2) evidence of an ability to teach effectively college level physics courses.
Preferred qualifications: (1) experience in teaching at the college level; (2) experience in and a commitment to teaching in a multicultural, multiracial environment with students of diverse backgrounds and learning styles; and (3) experience with instructional technology and active learning techniques.

Project Coordinator for the Connecticut Digital Newspaper Project - Connecticut State Library, Hartford

Project Coordinator for the Connecticut Digital Newspaper Project - Connecticut State Library, Hartford. A project coordinator, to be based out of the Connecticut State Library, is sought to supervise the Connecticut Digital Newspaper Project a project funded by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) to digitize 100,000 pages of microfilmed Connecticut newspapers. This is a 35 hour per week, contracted position, with modest travel required within Connecticut and annual trips to Washington D.C. Ideally, the start date is November 1, 2013 and the position will continue through September 30, 2015. Compensation will depend upon experience and level of involvement and compensation shall not exceed $140,000 over 22 months. Benefits are not included. Under the direction of the Project Co-Director (Jane F. Cullinane) the Project Coordinator will: Manage project staff and coordinate project workflow; Train and supervise Project Library Technical Assistant; Develop and document procedures and oversee selection, digitization, metadata capture, OCR, workflow control, quality control and related activities; Develop and maintain tracking system for microfilm and deliverables; Work with vendors to ensure high quality deliverables; Confirm bibliographic completeness and perform technical analysis of microfilm; Validate scanned images and metadata; Work with Project Cataloger and the Serials Librarian to maintain project database; Work with Project Co-Director as project spokesperson and participate in publicity efforts, such as the website, blogging and representing the project at meetings; Work with Project Co-Director to manage project budget; Deliver progress reports on specified semi-annual schedule; Other duties as assigned. Required Experience and Qualifications: Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited school or foreign equivalent; At least 3 years of relevant experience; Solid understanding of digitization and/or conversion projects; Experience with XML and standard metadata schemas (non-MARC and MARC) and principles governing standards in digital libraries; Experience with quality control of digital projects; Project management experience; Must have a valid driver’s license. Desirable Experience and Qualifications: Knowledge of microfilming procedures, especially newspaper microfilming; Knowledge of newspapers or serials, and ability to assess complex relationships between titles; Demonstrated ability to pay attention to detail; Equally important are strong interpersonal and oral and written communication skills, the ability to analyze and solve problems; the ability to work with a variety of people; flexibility and willingness to shift priorities according to current needs. Description: The Physics and Astronomy academic unit http://www.stcloudstate.edu/physics is home to faculty experts in astronomy, optics, and physics, as well as a group of dedicated support staff and students. This position is a full-time fixed-term non-tenure-track faculty position in physics. Examples of courses that may need to be taught include calculus based introductory physics I and II (PHYS 234/235), supplemental instruction for introductory physics I (PHYS 199), junior-level optics (PHYS 333), and lasers (PHYS 435).
Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate courses with laboratories at all levels in the academic unit as well as advanced courses in optics, advise students, engage in scholarly activities, and participate in continual development of curriculum and assessment activities.

Preferred:
· Research and/or teaching experience in optics beyond the Ph.D.

· Ability to teach and work effectively with students colleagues, and others in the university

Summer Aide, Children’s Services - Canton Public Library. A temporary, part-time position offering a great deal of library and children’s programming experience. Duties: Working with Children’s Room staff in all aspects of children’s services: helping to prepare and present library programs for children and teens; conducting special children’s and teens programs as requested; working at the Children’s Room service desk answering questions from patrons, assisting with computers, and helping patrons with the summer reading program; assisting with collection maintenance and displays, performing other duties as requested or assigned. Hours & Pay: 20 hours per week on average for July and August only. Flexibility in working hours, including evenings. $9.09 - $9.18 per hour. Requirements: High school diploma, college degree, or college degree in progress. Experience working with children. Must be able to learn routine library procedures, follow oral and written instructions, and communicate clearly and courteously with co-workers and the public. A strong and diverse reader.
