JOB DETAILS:
The Department of Engineering Physics invites applications for two or more full time lecturers in Physics for the 2014-2015 academic year. Salary is competitive with excellent benefits. Appointment date is August 19, 2014.
QUALIFICATIONS:
M.S. (by June 30, 2014), Ph.D. or ABD in Physics or related field. Candidates must have one year of teaching experience; two semesters as a half-time teaching assistant in graduate school meet this requirement.
Qualifications also include good communication skills with both students and colleagues; the ability to teach introductory undergraduate physics lectures and laboratories; interest in and commitment to undergraduate education.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Teach introductory-level physics and/or physical science, including labs.
DEPARTMENT INFORMATION:
The Engineering Physics Department (http://www3.uwplatt.edu/engineering-physics), in the College of Engineering, Mathematics, and Science, has eight full-time tenure/tenure track positions and two full-time academic staff. The department offers an undergraduate degree in Engineering Physics and a B.S. degree in Microsystems and Nanomaterials. The department also serves programs in engineering, science, technology, business, and education. Yearly enrollments in the service physics courses are about 800 in calculus-based physics, 200 in algebra-based physics, 50 in astronomy, and 50 in physical science. Introductory physics classrooms are "studio" style to support interactive teaching and learning.

The University of Wisconsin-Platteville, founded in 1866, enrolls about 8,000 students in 42 baccalaureate and 6 master's programs. Learning Sciences and STEM - Tenure Track/Tenured Open Rank

The Graduate School of Education at Rutgers University is seeking to hire an outstanding scholar in the learning sciences with a research focus in one of the STEM fields. The GSE has a core group of faculty who work within the field of the learning sciences who are looking to broaden and expand this expertise. We are seeking a scholar who has demonstrated significant accomplishment via publications and funding and who will be able to establish an independent research agenda within a highly collaborative environment. Therefore, the position is open to individuals of all ranks, including assistant professors with an established record of accomplishment. We are seeking individuals who have deep understanding of design and have strong classroom-based research experience. The specific substantive area of interest is open. The successful candidate will be able to provide evidence of teaching ability and will be expected to teach courses for masters and doctoral level students, and may also teach occasional undergraduate courses. In addition, the candidate should provide evidence of having successful collaborations with students and with other colleagues within and/or across institutions. The candidate must have an earned doctorate in a relevant field. Our School and University are especially interested in applications from individuals who are members of groups that have been and still are underrepresented in university faculty positions.

The Physics Department at Mount Allison University invites applications for a tenure-track position, with primary responsibilities for teaching and research in the area of astronomy. Applicants must possess a Ph.D. in astronomy, astrophysics, or a closely related area, and have a strong commitment to undergraduate teaching and research. The successful candidate will teach courses in our undergraduate program in the areas of astronomy, astrophysics, and general physics. The successful candidate will have a rigorous research program capable of both attracting external funding and involving undergraduate students. Mount Allison University is a highly rated, primarily undergraduate institution with an active and diverse Physics Department. Mount Allison's on-campus observatory offers opportunities for teaching, outreach, and some niche research. The ability to work in an observatory setting would be an asset. Job Description

SUMMARY
As a member of the Physics Department in the Division of Natural Sciences (www.nic.edu/natsci), the physics instructor will provide instruction in approximately four courses per semester. The teaching assignment may be selected from the following courses: Phys 101, Phys 103, Phys 111, Phys 112, Phys 211, Phys 212 (www.nic.edu/catalog). Depending on a candidate’s academic degrees the teaching assignment could include selected mathematics and/or engineering courses.

The Department: The Physics department is a small department consisting of two full time faculty members and one part time instructor.  The Physics department serves majors in physics, engineering, and math.  The Physics department’s small class sizes, supportive faculty and facilities provide an excellent learning environment for all physics students.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
This list includes but is not limited to the following:

  • Teaches a minimum of 15 equivalent credit hours per semester as assigned and maintains additional weekly contractual hours, including a minimum of five office hours, five campus hours and five discretionary hours divided between office and campus hours for a total of 30 hours on campus per week
  • Order materials and set up labs
  • Utilizes non-traditional delivery methods including Internet and IVC
  • Becomes familiar with the assigned textbook(s), prepares class presentations and handouts for electronic distribution, and prepares a syllabus for each course
  • Prepares, gives, and grades tests and homework and delivers grades to the registrar on time
  • Receives training in and keeps skills current in using the electronic and physical equipment and software necessary to accomplishing teaching and advising responsibilities
  • Advises students using the recommended procedures as outlined in the College Advising Handbook
  • Identifies student-learning outcomes; develops process and tools for assessment; incorporates results in order to modify instruction and materials in general education, degree program, course cluster, and/or certificate program, in coordination with colleagues
  • Participates in student recruitment, curriculum development, and serves on college committees
  • Provides mentorship for adjunct faculty and orients associate faculty as needed
  • Attends and participates in faculty meetings
  • Participates in professional development activities
  • Cultivates effective public relations with various community agencies/service providers and/or educational partners
  • Demonstrates commitment to the philosophy and mission of a comprehensive community college.
  • May teach evenings and/or weekends

REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
The requirements listed below are representative of the minimum qualifications necessary for an individual to satisfactorily perform each essential duty and be successful in the position. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the duties.

Education and Experience:
Minimum of a Master’s in physics. Individuals with a Bachelor’s in physics and a Master’s in engineering may be considered. Demonstrated sensitivity to the needs of students, faculty, and staff from multi-cultural backgrounds. Prior teaching experience in higher education preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to successfully recruit students into physics.

Renewable FT at University of Washington-Bothell

The University of Washington Bothell (UWB) seeks a dynamic educator to teach in the fast-growing Physical Sciences Division of the School of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics at the rank of Lecturer Full-Time. The initial term of appointment for this full-time, nine-month multi-year renewable position will be September 16, 2014 through June 15, 2017.  All University faculty are expected to engage in teaching, research, and service.
Qualifications for this position include a minimum of three of the following:
1)      Familiarity and experience with modern teaching methods in physics (including lab).
2)      Familiarity with a variety of assessment tools.
3)      Familiarity with the physics education literature and/or participation in STEM education conferences or other similar activities.
4)      Familiarity with up to date laboratory safety techniques and rules.
5)      Experience in supervising other laboratory instructors, developing new and engaging laboratory experiments and pedagogy for Physics.
6)      Experience in developing Physics curriculum.
All University lecturers engage in teaching and service. Successful candidates for appointment at the rank of Lecturer Full-time will have an earned Ph.D. in physics or related field and have at least one year of teaching experience in physics.  Successful candidates will be able to demonstrate: ability to work independently and as part of a team; the ability to work with a diverse student population and employ a variety of instructional strategies. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in excess of the one-year minimum and a demonstrated ability to contribute broadly to the emerging physical sciences programs at UW Bothell. The School of STEM offers seven undergraduate degrees and two graduate degrees within its four Divisions of Biological Sciences, Computing and Software Systems, Engineering and Mathematics, and Physical Sciences.   Interactive Media Design and Mathematics degrees were launched in Autumn 2013, a degree in Chemistry is planned to begin in the Fall of 2014 and degrees in Physics, Mechanical Engineering and Computer Engineering are planned for initiation during the next two to four years. We also offer masters degrees in Computer Science and Software Engineering, a masters degree in Cyber Security Engineering beginning fall 2013, and plan to offer a masters degree in Electrical Engineering beginning fall 2014. Our present laboratory facilities will be augmented in Autumn 2014 by the new 74,000 square-foot Science and Academic Building, which will include eleven new science and engineering laboratories.
