Astrocamp Instructor

Instructor – School Year Position

We are currently hiring instructors for the School Year, beginning January 3, 2014 and ending May 23, 2014 with opportunities to work future seasons as well. Astrocamp is a unique non-profit education center that specializes in astronomy and physical sciences. Located on a forested campus near the town of Idyllwild at an elevation of 5,600 feet amidst the beautiful San Jacinto Mountains of Southern California. Over 16,000 students from 8-14 years old attend Astrocamp each year. With excellent teaching facilities we bring science to life through hands-on, experiential classes and activities. Our labs and facilities include an Olympic sized pool; extensive ropes course and rock wall, innovative classrooms, and two state of the art telescope viewing areas with CCD capabilities. Instructors have small group sizes and remain with the same group of students throughout their 3-5 day program. Astrocamp provides incredible experiences for kids and instructors alike. Salary and Benefits: Starting at $55 per day, plus Room and Board. Staff live on-site in partially furnished group apartments and all meals are provided in the dining hall. Staff are not required to supervise students in the dorms. Health insurance after six months of employment, and training is fully paid. Astrocamp is located on a 90-acre campus adjacent to a national forest with easy access to world-class rock climbing, outstanding hiking, and great mountain biking.

Qualifications: Requires a passion for learning and working with children. Must be a positive, energetic, and organized team member eager to learn new content. Desire to work and live in a small camp community is mandatory. Requires a Bachelors degree in the physical sciences. Previous teaching experience is a plus. First Aid and CPR Certification required and lifeguard certification is helpful.  Certifications will be provided on site to those not certified.

Science Educator-Scientist-Researcher with BSCS

Science Educators, Scientists, Researchers. BSCS (Biological Sciences Curriculum Study) has several full-time openings for individuals with different areas of strength. We describe the general qualifications first and then elaborate on specific qualities that are more specialized. All highly qualified people with a commitment to improving STEM education are encouraged to apply.

BSCS is a not-for-profit, tax exempt, 501(c) (3), educational research and development organization. BSCS, now in its 55th year, is the oldest continuously active research and development group focused on innovative programs to support teaching and learning in science. BSCS’s mission is to transform science teaching and learning through research and development that strengthens learning environments and inspires a global community of scientifically literate citizens. Our three primary lines of research focus on the Nature of Curriculum, Teacher Learning and Practice, and Leadership and Policy.

We are searching for candidates interested in contributing to the work of a dynamic curriculum study. The strongest applicants will demonstrate a passion for science education reform, the ability and interest in working across all lines of research, and an excitement about contributing to the overall mission of the organization. Candidates must be willing to relocate to the Colorado Springs, Colorado area.

Desired Education and Experience
A doctorate in science education, a science discipline, or related field is preferred; a masters degree is required. In addition, an interest in and/or experience with e-learning environments for students and teachers, a background in the learning sciences, or experience conducting educational research is highly desirable.

  • Willingness to learn and understand the history of BSCS and the defining values of our work


Specific Desired Qualifications for Quantitative Research Emphasis
A competitive applicant with a quantitative research emphasis will have experience conducting research that uses quantitative methods. Preferred competencies include areas such as power analysis, multi-level modeling, structural equation modeling, Item-R Theory/Rasch Modeling, and inter-rater agreement. Although the focus of this position is quantitative research, applicants should also be comfortable with qualitative techniques, as many BSCS projects use a mixed methods approach.

Specific Desired Qualifications for the General Science Education Emphasis
A competitive applicant for the science education emphasis will have multiple years of K-12 science teaching experience, have conducted professional development in diverse settings, and have experience working in informal STEM education settings. Knowledge and experience in program evaluation is highly desirable.

Specific Desired Qualifications for Science Content Emphasis
A competitive applicant for the science content emphasis will have a scholarly track record within her/his scientific discipline and have worked with teachers and/or students in formal or informal STEM education settings. Applicants with a Ph.D. in geology, chemistry, or physics, or a Ph.D. in biology with an emphasis in evolution or ecology are preferred.
