Information Literacy Program Internship - Fairfield University DiMenna-Nyselius Library, Spring 2014. Description of Program: In concert with the mission of Fairfield University, the DiMenna-Nyselius Library Instruction Program seeks to develop information-literate lifelong learners. We define information literacy as the ability to recognize when information is needed; to effectively locate and organize information while considering the myriad of information sources and formats available; to logically and critically evaluate and assimilate information while seeking objective truth and personal meaning; to synthesize and use information to communicate conclusions persuasively; and to apply these skills ethically and legally throughout life, with a sense of social responsibility. Qualifications: Interns must be currently enrolled in a graduate level Library and Information Science or School Media program. Relevant class work in reference or instruction preferred. Description of Internship: The Intern will play an active role in our Information Literacy Program. The Intern will: Work closely with the Instruction Coordinator to design and deliver approximately 8-10 library instruction classes. The exact number and types of classes will be determined through careful review of the Intern’s experience and interests, as well as our Program’s needs. Have the opportunity to observe seasoned instruction librarians, and receive substantive feedback on content and delivery of instruction, work collaboratively with faculty on lesson plans, depending on experience, career interests, and need. The Intern could also produce a project related to our instruction program. The Intern would work closely with the Instruction Coordinator on such a project, meet regularly with the Instruction Coordinator for ongoing feedback and discussion. Depending on experience, previous coursework, and interest, readings and discussions of information literacy related readings may be included. This internship is an excellent opportunity to work in an academic environment, learn about Information Literacy Standards in theory and in practice, and gain valuable instruction experience. Head, Digital Services Unit, Technical Services - Yale University Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library, New Haven. Position Focus: Under the direction of the Head of Technical Services and working in close collaboration with units across the Beinecke Library and the Yale University Library, the Head of Beinecke Digital Services leads and coordinates the Beinecke Library’s digitization program, digital projects, and user experience initiatives that enhance access to and use of Beinecke Library and its collections, including the Beinecke Digital Library, collection web pages, and online exhibits. The Head leads and provides technical expertise in the investigation, development, and application of interfaces and tools that affect the user experience, as well as metadata and digitization workflows and standards. The Head of Beinecke Digital Services liaises with the Yale University Library’s Information Technology and Digital Initiatives departments and works collaboratively with Yale University Library staff. The Head may represent the Beinecke within Yale University Library and nationally and internationally in discussions and committees pertaining to user experience initiatives, metadata, and digitization at Yale and is active professionally. The Head of Beinecke Digital Services supervises the work of three senior photographers and three metadata catalog assistants to coordinate and supervise metadata creation, digitization, color management, and quality control activities. The Head participates in the Beinecke’s Technical Services Management Group to develop technical services strategies, policies, and procedures for the Beinecke Library. Programmer Analyst 2, Integrated Library Technical Services - Yale University Library, New Haven. Position Focus: Reporting to the Manager of Digital Library and Programming Services, the Programmer Analyst plans, develops, tests, and documents computer programs, applying knowledge of programming techniques and computer systems. In addition, the programmer analyst evaluates user requests for new or modified programs to determine feasibility, cost and time required, compatibility with current systems, and computer capabilities. The Programmer Analyst will focus primarily on evaluation, creation and adoption of software used for ingesting archival collection materials, finding aids and metadata into a digital preservation repository based on the Fedora Commons software in support of a grant funded project to digitize a collection of more than one million documents and objects covering Dr. Henry Kissinger’s life. This position has a duration of two and a half years from the date of hire. Required Education, Skills and Experience: 1. Bachelor’s degree and three years of experience in analysis and programming of small to medium scale systems or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 2. Well-developed programming skills; emphasis on code documentation, code standards, and demonstrated use of available frameworks. 3. Well-developed analytical and problem solving skills. 4. Proven ability writing SQL queries using MySQL, Oracle and/or Microsoft SQL Server; demonstrated ability in application development with two or more of the following: C++, Java/J2EE, Ruby, Python and/or C#. 5. Library IT: Library IT is a department of innovative people who provide multiple IT related services to the Yale Library and the Yale community. The staff supports 8 Enterprise Systems including the integrated library system (ILS). The department maintains 920 workstations, plus a growing number of mobile devices. Library IT maintains 856 Terabytes of storage, and hosts approximately 80 servers, virtual and physical. In addition to maintaining the library’s computers, webpages, and infrastructure, much of the work in the department is project based. Library IT projects are initiated to provide the Yale community with seamless and transparent access to the library’s rich resources, including physical, electronic, and digitized materials. Public Services Librarian - Allen Music Library, University of Hartford, West Hartford. Position Summary: Provides formal and informal bibliographic instruction to students, faculty and staff. Supervises circulation, reserves, stack maintenance and equipment operations in the music/dance library. Assists library patrons in their research using print, online and audiovisual resources in music and dance. Recommends public service policies for the Allen Library to Head of Allen Library and Mortensen Library's Head of Reference and Public Services. This regular full-time exempt position may work evenings and/or rotate weekends. Key Responsibilities: Assists students and other library patrons in making the best use of print, electronic, and audiovisual music, dance, and other performing arts resources in a wide array of languages and formats and responds to questions. Position Focus: Reporting to the Head of Access and Delivery Services for the Medical Library, this position provides direct oversight for the library’s evening and weekend access and delivery services. Works with University Security to guarantee the safety of patrons, staff and collections, and ensures that proper security measures are followed. Works closely with Facilities when necessary to maintain a safe and functional environment in the evenings and weekend hours. 7. Oversees stacks maintenance and projects. 8. Advances the initiatives of university departments, including but not limited to maintaining databases for the Yale Center for Clinical Investigation and creating bibliographies with persistent URLs in support of the Internal Medicine Curriculum. 9. May also participate and coordinate the activities of other related services and operations in conjunction with other units such as the Library Shelving Facility and West Campus operations. 10. Required to work occasional holidays and recess days. 11. Maybe required to assist in disaster recovery efforts. 12.
