Head, Digital Services Unit, Technical Services - Yale University Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library, New Haven

Head, Digital Services Unit, Technical Services - Yale University Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library, New Haven. Position Focus: Under the direction of the Head of Technical Services and working in close collaboration with units across the Beinecke Library and the Yale University Library, the Head of Beinecke Digital Services leads and coordinates the Beinecke Library’s digitization program, digital projects, and user experience initiatives that enhance access to and use of Beinecke Library and its collections, including the Beinecke Digital Library, collection web pages, and online exhibits. The Head leads and provides technical expertise in the investigation, development, and application of interfaces and tools that affect the user experience, as well as metadata and digitization workflows and standards. The Head of Beinecke Digital Services liaises with the Yale University Library’s Information Technology and Digital Initiatives departments and works collaboratively with Yale University Library staff. The Head may represent the Beinecke within Yale University Library and nationally and internationally in discussions and committees pertaining to user experience initiatives, metadata, and digitization at Yale and is active professionally. The Head of Beinecke Digital Services supervises the work of three senior photographers and three metadata catalog assistants to coordinate and supervise metadata creation, digitization, color management, and quality control activities. The Head participates in the Beinecke’s Technical Services Management Group to develop technical services strategies, policies, and procedures for the Beinecke Library. Required Education, Skills and Experience: 1. Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited library school or equivalent accredited degree. In selected instances, a post-graduate degree in museum studies or a related discipline in the humanities or social sciences may be substituted for a master’s degree in library science. 2. Excellent supervisory and strong leadership abilities. 3. Demonstrated ability to work with a wide range of digital library standards and practices, such as digitization, digital preservation, standards for media content, metadata, controlled authorities, and user experience. 4. Project management skills, especially the ability to devise and achieve agreed-upon completion dates for projects; ability to multitask and keep priorities aligned to objectives; ability to identify and analyze problems in the context of special collections technology initiatives. 5. Excellent analytical, oral, and written communication skills, especially the ability to convey and explain to non-technical audiences the importance and impact of technology trends and issues relevant to the YUL’s operation and mission. 6. Strong commitment to customer service with well-developed interpersonal skills and demonstrated abilities to work collegially with staff, researchers, and colleagues, especially in the context of technology initiatives that are specific to academic libraries and special collections. Programmer Analyst 2, Integrated Library Technical Services - Yale University Library, New Haven. Position Focus: Reporting to the Manager of Digital Library and Programming Services, the Programmer Analyst plans, develops, tests, and documents computer programs, applying knowledge of programming techniques and computer systems. In addition, the programmer analyst evaluates user requests for new or modified programs to determine feasibility, cost and time required, compatibility with current systems, and computer capabilities. The Programmer Analyst will focus primarily on evaluation, creation and adoption of software used for ingesting archival collection materials, finding aids and metadata into a digital preservation repository based on the Fedora Commons software in support of a grant funded project to digitize a collection of more than one million documents and objects covering Dr. Henry Kissinger’s life. This position has a duration of two and a half years from the date of hire. Required Education, Skills and Experience: 1. Bachelor’s degree and three years of experience in analysis and programming of small to medium scale systems or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 2. Well-developed programming skills; emphasis on code documentation, code standards, and demonstrated use of available frameworks. 3. Well-developed analytical and problem solving skills. 4. Proven ability writing SQL queries using MySQL, Oracle and/or Microsoft SQL Server; demonstrated ability in application development with two or more of the following: C++, Java/J2EE, Ruby, Python and/or C#. 5. Ability to communicate effectively through both oral and written expression; excellent customer service skills. 6. Advanced skills in object-oriented programming. Preferred Education, Skills and Experience: 1. Five or more years of experience with object-oriented programming. 2. Experience with front-end frameworks such as Bootstrap, JavaScript, JavaScript Toolkits such as JQuery and D3, Ajax, and Java/JSP. 3. Experience working with Archival Collections; understanding of software packages: Archivists’ Toolkit and/or Archivematica. 4. Demonstrated ability designing and documenting complex procedures. Library IT: Library IT is a department of innovative people who provide multiple IT related services to the Yale Library and the Yale community. The staff supports 8 Enterprise Systems including the integrated library system (ILS). The department maintains 920 workstations, plus a growing number of mobile devices. Library IT maintains 856 Terabytes of storage, and hosts approximately 80 servers, virtual and physical. In addition to maintaining the library’s computers, webpages, and infrastructure, much of the work in the department is project based. Library IT projects are initiated to provide the Yale community with seamless and transparent access to the library’s rich resources, including physical, electronic, and digitized materials. Through the development of these projects and other initiatives, Library IT will provide the Yale community with a high level of service on par with peer academic institutions. Evergreen Systems Specialist - Bibliomation, Inc. (Waterbury) is Connecticut’s largest library consortium consisting of over 60 member libraries. Bibliomation libraries manage resources and materials using a shared Evergreen open source integrated library system. Other member services include website hosting, email, downloadable electronic media, and network telecommunications. Offices are located in Waterbury, CT. Bibliomation is seeking an Evergreen Systems Specialist to join the Evergreen support team. The Evergreen Systems Specialist will: Report to the Evergreen Systems Manager, working closely to manage the Evergreen system which is operated using a virtual Linux multi-server environment. Assist in troubleshooting software issues by performing log analysis and error debugging. Assist in technical tasks associated with backup and recovery activities. Monitor system performance and adjust operating systems and applications to avoid performance issues. Install and test new Evergreen software patches and releases. Make new recommendations or modify existing system configurations based on member library needs. Perform systems integration testing of various operating systems, databases, system utilities, and hardware upgrades. Required: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Computer/Information Science or in a related field; 1-3 years working experience; Proficiency with Linux operating systems; Relational database experience, including SQL scripting; Familiarity with HTML, CSS, JavaScript; Familiarity with virtualization tools; Oral and written communication skills; Ability to collaborate well within a team environment. Library Systems Coordinator - Trinity College Library, Hartford. The Library Systems Coordinator is responsible for planning, implementing, and supporting the Library’s information technology systems and services. Ensures the successful deployment of our integrated library system (Voyager), interlibrary loan software (ILLiad), and other critical local systems. Develops and maintains multiple tools and applications to discover, support, and analyze library collections and operations. Provides leadership in helping staff evaluate opportunities for the introduction of new technologies that enhance library services. Duties: 1. Evaluate, implement, and manage all library software, systems, and equipment. A primary area of focus will be managing library enterprise applications (Voyager, ILLiad, etc.) and ensuring both their successful operation and integration with other College systems. 2. Build local scripts, reports, databases, and web applications to support ongoing library operations. Oversees internal and external data transfers. 3.Develop ongoing training for library staff to allow them to become knowledgeable and independent users of our local systems and technology. 4.Collaborate with staff on investigating, evaluating, recommending, and implementing new tools and technology. 5. Maintain written documentation of all implementation and development decisions. 6. Serve as the Library’s primary liaison to both Trinity’s Information Technology Services Department and our CTW Library Consortium for all IT issues, and represent the Library at relevant national and regional meetings. 7. Perform other tasks and duties as assigned. Technical skills: Experience maintaining an integrated library system; proficiency in using relational database management tools especially ODBC, MS Access, and SQL; ability to navigate a Linux operating system and understand and modify shell scripts and other automated operations; working knowledge of HTML and XML; familiarity with standard desktop software and hardware. Personal qualifications: Self-starter with strong organizational, interpersonal, and project management skills; excellent oral and written communication skills; adaptability, creativity, and an aptitude to learn new technological tools and techniques. Hours are typically Mon-Fri 8:30am-4:30pm. Work hours may include covering an evening (2pm – 10pm) and rotating weekend during the academic year. Systems Librarian for Public Services - Library Connection, Inc. (Windsor), a consortium of one academic and 26 public libraries, seeks an experienced individual to serve as a Systems Librarian for Public Services at its office in Windsor, CT. This staff member will initially manage the consortium’s migration to a new ILS. After the migration is complete, the position will transition into a full time Systems Librarian for Public Services. Migration Manager duties include planning, scheduling, and managing all aspects of the migration: database cleanup; simplifying and standardizing data categorization; accommodating transaction and fee data; data extraction; consortium and library staff training; testing and quality assurance; customization of library patron interfaces; and new member migration. System Librarian for Public Services duties include working with member libraries, committees, vendors, and Library Connection staff to support and enhance our shared Integrated Library System; troubleshooting, developing and enhancing system capabilities and consortia functionality that further consortium goals. This individual must possess general knowledge of all modules of an integrated library system. Digital Resources Librarian (C13-067) - Elihu Burritt Library at Central Connecticut State University (New Britian) invites innovative and energetic applicants to fill a full-time, tenure-track librarian position that will serve on the Library’s Information Systems and Resources team. The successful candidate will be responsible for a variety of tasks that successfully respond to the research needs of CCSU’s students, faculty, and staff.
