Public Services Librarian - Allen Music Library, University of Hartford, West Hartford

Public Services Librarian - Allen Music Library, University of Hartford, West Hartford. Position Summary: Provides formal and informal bibliographic instruction to students, faculty and staff. Supervises circulation, reserves, stack maintenance and equipment operations in the music/dance library. Assists library patrons in their research using print, online and audiovisual resources in music and dance. Recommends public service policies for the Allen Library to Head of Allen Library and Mortensen Library's Head of Reference and Public Services. This regular full-time exempt position may work evenings and/or rotate weekends. Key Responsibilities: Assists students and other library patrons in making the best use of print, electronic, and audiovisual music, dance, and other performing arts resources in a wide array of languages and formats and responds to questions. Recruits, trains, and evaluates staff who provide reference and information service to library patrons. Helps devise and implement public service policies, procedures, new services, and marketing strategies in consultation or collaboration with the Head of Allen Library and the Mortensen Library's Head of Reference and Public Services. Assists the Head of the Allen Library in identifying priorities, goals, strategies, and direction of Allen Library. Plans and presents instructional classes on information resources to students, faculty and staff. Administers the HLM 020 online information literacy course. Maintains print manuals and online information. Supervises the Allen Library circulation department, including circulation services, course reserves, stack maintenance, and equipment. Supervises one full-time assistant plus student employees. Monitors the student employee budget in an effort to ensure prudent fiscal management. Updates and maintains the Allen Library web pages in conjunction with the University Libraries Web Applications Developer and Technology Specialist to enhance usability, promote library offerings, and ensure maintenance is in compliance with University standards and University Libraries policies. Helps develop, enhance, and/or test information search tools. Provides recommendations for title development of the print and online reference collection and assists in the overall maintenance of the collection. Maintains awareness of trends and advances in the field through attendance at relevant meetings or seminars as well as through regular examination of literature in the field. Participates in relevant professional organizations. Serves on internal and external committees as appropriate. Maintains statistics and develops accurate reports for the Head of the Allen Library. Performs other related duties as assigned. Indicates an "essential" job function. Formal Education: Bachelor's Degree required with a major in music and Master's Degree of Library Science from an A.L.A. accredited institution required (or recognized equivalents). Work Experience: 1 year to < 2 years. Knowledge & Skills: Professional Skills: Requires knowledge of theories and practices of a professional field. This level of skill is typically reserved for an individual with a four-year degree, or a high-level vocational skill demonstrated by a number of years of on-the-position experience (i.e. management). Writes reports using technical data requiring considerable interpretation, developing new methods and procedures. Frequently applies knowledge to practical issues and problems. Public Services Coordinator - Allen Music Library, University of Hartford, West Hartford. Position Summary - Manages reserves and stack maintenance for the Allen Library. Oversees student employees in these areas. Assists in the daily operations of the circulation desk. Actively provides information services to all users. This is a regular full-time position that may include evening hours. Key Responsibilities: Assists in the management of circulation desk activities including implementing and communicating library use policies to all patrons as well as resolving loan problems. Oversees and provides daily support to student employees working at the circulation desk. Monitors the preparation of library overdue notices and prepares billing notices for delinquent materials. Assumes responsibility for circulation monies.* Assumes responsibility for the preparation and processing of print, sound, and online library reserves. Maintains Access reserves databases. Educates faculty regarding reserve procedures.* Provides quality customer service to internal and external patrons handling a variety of routine library issues. Answers inquiries regarding music and dance materials. Instructs patrons in use of the online catalog. Assists with patron requests for interlibrary services.* Assumes responsibility for the maintenance of stacks, including shelving and inventories. Assigns work, oversees and provides daily support to student shelving staff.* Collects and maintains relevant statistics including monthly and annual circulation figures, website and online reserve usage figures, fines paid and monies collected. Provides statistical information to appropriate parties including the Head of Allen Library and the Public Services Librarian to be used for ad hoc and annual reports. Assumes responsibility for ensuring appropriate maintenance of audio-visual, electronic, photocopying and print equipment. Full-time Digital Cataloging Specialist - Hartford Public Library seeks a full-time Digital Cataloging Specialist. Reporting jointly to the Technical Services Director and the Curator of the Hartford History Center, the Digital Cataloging Specialist is responsible for the cataloging and processing of the Library’s historical collections and the development and maintenance of the classical music collections. This includes providing reference services and public program assistance in the Hartford History Center; the training and supervision of Hartford History Center staff in the proper handling of historical materials according to archival standards; original and copy cataloging of classical music records, music scores and archival collections. Position Qualifications: Masters degree in library science from an ALA-accredited program or equivalent. Minimum of three years cataloging experience. Direct knowledge and experience with OCLC Connexion and experience with an integrated library system (ILS); experience with III Millennium ILS preferred. Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Music background of knowledge of the intricacies of music. Ability to manage multiple complex projects. Historical research and archival records management skills. Experienced with Encoded Archival Description (EAD) preferred. Strong commitment to working within a team management structure. Strong commitment to public service. Strong communication and public relations skills. Thorough knowledge of selection and classification of library collection. Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of modern library systems and programs. Strong computer skills with expertise in word-processing, spreadsheet and database programs, specifically Microsoft Office Suite. Valid Connecticut driver’s license or ability to obtain upon employment. Cataloging Coordinator - University of Hartford, Allen Music Library. Position Summary: Performs general and basic cataloging and processing functions for the Allen Library.
