Library Assistant, Full-Time - Enfield Public Library. Hourly Rate: $20.18 . General Statement of Duties: The Library Assistant performs many support activities involved in operating a library by assisting the professional librarians following established rules and procedures and policies. May assist in the administration of a branch in the absence of a professional librarian. Library Assistants generally work in both technical and user services. User services work is directly with the public to help them find the information needed. Technical services is acquiring and preparing material for use and dealing less frequently with the public. An employee in this class shall perform routine general library work and may acquire proficiency in only one of the general specialized areas of library work. Library Assistants may work on special projects. Supervision Received: Works under the general direction and supervision of the Head of Circulation who issues instructions, spot checks work or requires cross-checking by other personnel, but has some latitude for the exercise of independent judgment and initiative. Essential Job Functions: In the administration of a branch or division in the administration of a branch or division in the absence of a professional librarian; participates in all the work at the circulation desk such as processing interlibrary loans, and reserves books, may supervise computer use and train others in the use of the computer; instructs patrons in the use of media and equipment and operates equipment, answers telephone, receives overdues, etc; orients patrons to the library by informing them of services available and the location of media, by recommending media and by explaining use of the Public Access catalog; records departmental statistics; compiles and maintains suspension list; compiles and maintains reserved books. Other Job Functions: Provides informational and directional services for patrons, assists in locating reference sources and instructs in their use; operates and maintains audiovisual equipment; may assist in the promoting of programs for patrons; maintains the collection by recommending what media will be mended or discarded and by shelf reading; performs related duties as required. Utilize all relevant functions in ExLibris Library system, including Voyager Acquisitions, Circulation, and Web Voyage, Metalib, SFX, and Primo. Process patron requests for interlibrary loan when needed. Participate in developing new, more efficient workflow and policies. Participate in staff meetings representing student issues. Communicate patron requests and complaints to University Librarian. Shelve and straighten materials, shifting when necessary. Create written procedures when requested. Other duties as assigned by Supervisor. Qualifications: 2 years of college and 2 years appropriate experience in a Library. Excellent keyboarding skills; demonstrated basic knowledge of Excel, Word, and Outlook. Demonstrated mastery of basic computer operations, including internet navigation skills. Ability to work with minimal supervision. Ability to make steady progress on large tasks weekly. Attention to detail; production of high quality, accurate work. Demonstrated ability to work in teams, be flexible and acquire new skills independently. Must be able to lift 30 pounds and work around dust and mold. Strong service orientation. Part-Time Circulation/Technical Services Assistant - Trumbull Library has openings for part-time Library Assistants (19hrs/week) to work at adult and children’s service desks, providing basic support services and assistance to users. Individual must possess excellent customer service and computer skills, be energetic, self-motivated, able to work well on a team, be an avid reader, and willing to learn new things. Along with duties related to circulation and processing of materials, additional responsibilities and tasks for Assistants assigned to Youth Department include assisting with class visits, presenting story times under the direction of professional librarian when scheduled and assisting librarians in the preparation of all children’s programs, crafts and displays. Library Technical Assistant - Hamden Public Library
Library Technical Assistant - Hamden Public Library. Position Definition: Performs responsible and varied paraprofessional library duties or administrative clerical work. Assists patrons in using library services and facilities. May select and/or maintain materials of a specific unit or library division. Supervision Received: Receives general supervision from a professional Librarian. Supervision Exercised: Provides general or task supervision to library clerks, pages, and seasonal employees or volunteers. Examples of Essential Job Duties: Plans work according to established procedures. Prioritizes tasks within work assignment. Performs work in special unit, including cataloging, children's, circulation, media, reference, branch services or as assigned. Maintains specific materials, supplies or equipment. Performs circulation desk duties, including charging and discharging library materials, and registering new patrons; answers telephone calls and provides information as necessary. Places books and loan materials on reserve as requested. Maintains circulation desk area in neat and functional conditions. Provides backup assistance in other library areas as required. Receives new collection materials, i.e., books, documents, music cassettes, CD's CD-ROMs, videos, DVDs and talking books, periodicals, etc. Reconciles materials received with purchase orders to assure accuracy of shipment. Enters library materials into database, bibliographic and holdings information. Copy cataloging and editing of MARC records. Physically processes all audio-visual materials for circulation. Assists patrons in the use of the library's catalogue and reference materials, answers reference questions as able; locates information or guides patrons to source materials. Assists patrons in use of computers and equipment, including database and Internet searching. Assists patrons in use of reference materials and public access catalogs and other library sources. Refers patrons as necessary to Reference Librarians. Assists children and students in the use of the library's catalogue and reference materials, answers reference questions; locates information or guides children to source materials. Assists children and students in use of computer system to locate books and materials, to access Internet and CD ROM reference sources. May lead story hours, library tours, craft programs, and related events to encourage reading, viewing and listening skills. Refers children and students to Children's Librarian as necessary. Prepared materials in promoting use of library, including posters, newsletters and exhibits. Processes books and materials for mailing in the interlibrary loan program. Maintains records of outgoing and incoming materials. Maintains inventory of library materials and supplies. Interacts with professional staff in maintaining Library collection by recommending or selecting new and replacement books, periodicals and other materials. Examples of Incidental Duties: May lead story hours; library tours, craft programs, and related events to encourage reading, viewing and listening skills when assigned to Children's unit. Relieves other employees as directed by supervisor, including responsibility for a unit in temporary absence of professional librarian. Interviews candidates for Page positions and provides on-the-job training to Pages and Clerks. Minimum Qualifications Required: An Associates Degree in Library Science, or two (2) years' experience in public library work, or an equivalent combination of experience and training. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: A working knowledge of library principles and practices is required. Must be able to apply the principles of library science to resolve practical problems and to deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Must be able to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, and diagrammatic and schedules form. Must be able to add, subtract, multiply and divide all units of measure, and compute ratios, rates and percentages. Must acquire a proficiency in library computer applications and have a general working knowledge of other interfacing departmental applications. Must acquire a proficiency in department specific applications and have a general knowledge of integrated software such as Microsoft Office and its applications, including Word and Excel, and be able to utilize the Town's e-mail system, or be able to acquire these skills within a limited training period as determined by department needs. Must be able to relate to and have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with library staff, children and adult patrons. Must have a general knowledge of library reference methods and procedures. Must be able to perform story telling and other presentations, and provide how to use the library instructions to classes. Must have working knowledge of children's literature and school reading programs. License or Certificate: A Connecticut Motor Vehicle Operator's license is desirable. Librarian (Technical Services) - U.S. Coast Guard Academy, New London. GS-1410-09 I. Position Summary: This position is located in the Library of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, New London, Connecticut, a four-year, accredited, degree granting institution and center of leadership development for the Coast Guard. The instant position reports to the Library Director and is a member of the Technical Services team led by the Systems Librarian/Head of Technical Services. The incumbent employs standard methods, techniques, concepts, and principles of librarianship to provide professional library services, such as cataloging and classifying materials and maintaining library collections. The incumbent assists the Systems Librarian in the authentication, activation and maintenance of access to paper and electronic serials. The employee is expected and to stay abreast of technology changes, and may make recommendations for improvements to cataloging and serial policies and procedures and workflows. II. Major Duties and Responsibilities: A. Catalogs and classifies materials, including serials, electronic resources, DVDs, microforms, and archives using established local practices and national and international standards such as Anglo-American Cataloging Rules, MARC, Resource Description and Access(RDA), Library of Congress Subject Headings and classification schedules, and other metadata standards. B. Performs database maintenance when needed in the course of daily work or as a part of projects. C. Maintains quality control standards in own work by checking for and correcting errors. D. Maintains serials local holdings in OCLC and assists the Systems Librarian in purchasing, licensing, and access of serials. E. Works with the Systems Librarian to maintain Serials Solutions products, library catalog, and electronic resources and provides other systems support as required. F. Supports and helps train library technicians assigned to copy cataloging, database maintenance, processing materials, and maintaining serials. G. Assists in maintaining library collections, including government documents, special and Coast Guard collections, serials, and microforms. Assists with planning and coordinating the shifting of the collections as necessary. H. Assists in the preparation of administrative reports and maintains statistics. Helps establish policies and procedures for cataloging and serials. I. Participates in rotations at the Circulation/Reference Desk. J. Serves on library and Academy committees as appropriate. Actively participates on any assigned teams. Team tasks may include: fourth class cadet library tours, participating in the physical property inventory, shelf-reading, etc. Key Requirements: U.S. Citizenship is required. This position requires a National Agency Check with Inquiries (NACI). This is a federal civil service position with a salary range at the GS-09 level ($52,295.00 to $67,978.00).
