Description: Plans, organizes and supervises the services and activities of the adult reference unit; and performs professional library services in assisting library patrons in the selection and use of library materials. Examples of Duties: Receives oral or written direction from Assistant Library Director. Plans work according to established library schedule or standard procedure. Establishes task priorities within reference unit. Assigns regular and daily tasks to professional and clerical staff. Assists in near-term and long-range planning of library services. Recommends policies and procedures for the improvement of reference services. Develops collection, including selection and weeding of books, periodicals and materials. Prepares reading lists for special interest groups. Plans and organizes special programs involving the use of library resources. Prepares public relations materials to promote library services. Provides supervision and training to library assistants, clerks and part-time employees in general and specialized tasks. Prepares statistical and narrative reports of some complexity for Assistant Library Director. Reports achievement of assigned work to Assistant Library Director. Examines professional publications and other sources for selection of books, periodicals and other materials. Attends meetings and participates in professional library organizations. Operates computer terminal in issuing, receiving and locating books and materials in division programs. Performs duties in other library divisions as needed. Typical Qualifications: Supplemental Information: The skills and knowledge required would generally be acquired with a Master’s degree in Library Science, and three years of progressively responsible public library experience, including one year as supervisor of a Library division. Ability to prepare and deliver brief, concise and attractive reports of library services and facilities both orally and in writing. A working knowledge of computer applications for library services. Reference Services Internship Program - West Hartford Public Library
Reference Services Internship Program - West Hartford Public Library welcomes applications from MLS candidates for its internship program. The program has been designed to provide practical, on-the-job experience to individuals pursuing a career in reference service. Applicants must have completed at least four graduate level library science courses before the start date of their internship including a reference services course. The successful applicant will be paid a stipend of $4375 for 250 hours of work over approximately 5 months starting in January. The intern will have the opportunity to shadow librarians at a fast-paced reference desk and will assist with the implementation of a special project focusing on Collection Management Technology. In addition, the intern will help with other departmental projects such as collection and website development, digitization projects, subject bibliographies, and other projects as assigned. Although the intern will work primarily in the Adult Division of the Noah Webster Library located at 20 South Main Street, s/he will do a rotation in each of the library’s two branches as well as other library divisions to gain a broader understanding of public library operations. This internship program is funded through the generous support of the West Hartford Public Library Foundation’s Thomas F. Kilfoil Fund. Eligibility and requirements: Enrollment in a Master of Library Science Program. Applicants must have completed at least four courses including a reference services course before the start date of the internship. Applicants must be eligible to work in the U.S. The stipend is provided by the West Hartford Public Library Foundation and will be administered by the school in which the student is enrolled.
