Two 1-year VAPs at Wooster

VAP at Earlham College

Description

Earlham College invites applications for a Visiting Assistant Professor position in the Department of Physics and Astronomy. This is a one-year, renewable up to three year, full-time appointment, beginning in August 2014. In addition to this position, the department has three FTEs with active research programs in computational biophysics, laser atomic and optical science, and astrophysics. Earlham's resources include modern laboratories in addition to multiple local computational clusters.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

The Physics and Astronomy Department seeks an individual who is first and foremost excited about teaching -- in lecture and laboratory -- to bright and motivated undergraduates at a nationally selective small liberal arts college. Responsibilities include contributing to both introductory and advanced courses, as well as upper-level courses in the applicant's area of specialty. While research is not required, some resources are available, especially for research involving undergraduates.

Experience & Qualifications

Preference will go to applicants who have completed (or are presently finalizing a dissertation for) a Ph.D. in Physics or a closely related field; teaching or post-doctoral experience is desirable. Earlham holds excellence in teaching as its most important criterion, so the search committee will be looking for evidence of a strong interest in teaching at the undergraduate level.

King's College seeks an Assistant Professor of Physics. This tenure track position begins fall 2014 and will be responsible for teaching introductory and advanced physics courses and will occasionally teach general education courses as a part of the College's core curriculum. Interested candidates should be committed to teaching at an institution where the liberal arts are emphasized, be prepared to develop a research program suitable for the inclusion of undergraduate science majors, and be committed to growing our new physics major and 3+2 Engineering program. Rockford University invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track assistant professor position in physics starting August 2014. A PhD or ABD in experimental physics required. Combined responsibility for introductory and some advanced level physics is required. Also, teaching some mathematics and/or computer science courses is possible, with the potential to expand the current minor in physics. Deep Springs College is seeking applicants for the Herbert Reich Chair in the Natural Sciences to begin teaching in the 2014-2015 academic year.
The position is one of three long-term faculty positions at Deep Springs College. Long-term faculty teach self-designed courses, both within their area of expertise and more broadly. The Department of Physics at Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio, anticipates an opening for a tenure track appointment at the Assistant Professor level beginning in the Fall of 2014. A Ph. D. is required along with a commitment to undergraduate teaching and research in a Jesuit liberal arts setting. Job Responsibilities
The Dean serves as the chief academic, administrative, and budgetary officer of the MNS School and reports directly to the Colleges Provost.  The MNS Dean:
  • Works with the Schools faculty, College administration, the deans of other Schools, and external partners to promote and catalyze improvements to the MNS Schools teaching/research capabilities, curriculum, unique and interdisciplinary programs, and facilities.
  • Serves as a model and mentor to both tenured and tenure-track faculty members.
  • Supervises all MNS faculty, Department Chairs and coordinators, and administrative staff.
  • Recommends hiring, reappointment, promotion and tenure, and other personnel actions as necessary.
  • Provides oversight and assistance during the hiring process of a high quality and diverse faculty and staff.
  • Promotes scholarly research activities of faculty and faculty-student collaborations.
  • Assists students with requests, exceptions, complaints, and the resolution of grievances.
  • Serves as an effective communicator and liaison to both internal and external constituencies, including fund-raising activities in conjunction with the Advancement office. 
  • Recommends budget to the Provost, and oversees the allocation and dispensation of School funds.
  • Represents the interests of the MNS faculty.
  • Teaches a course each semester in his/her discipline.
Minimum Qualifications
Earned doctorate by an accredited institution in one of the scientific disciplines represented by the MNS School with sufficient academic credentials to merit appointment to the rank of full professor.  The successful candidate will have a proven and effective track record at the level of department chair or above that demonstrates the candidates commitment to innovation and improvement.

Rider University - For the Fall of 2014 the Department of Chemistry, Biochemistry & Physics invites applications for a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level.  The physics program at Rider is currently in transition and we are seeking an energetic individual who is interested in helping to redevelop the physics program. TT at King's College, PA

King’s College seeks an Assistant Professor of Physics.  This tenure track position begins fall 2014 and will be responsible for teaching introductory and advanced physics courses and will occasionally teach general education courses as a part of the College’s core curriculum.  Interested candidates should be committed to teaching at an institution where the liberal arts are emphasized, be prepared to develop a research program suitable for the inclusion of undergraduate science majors and be committed to growing our new Physics major and 3+2 Engineering program. A Ph.D. in a related discipline is required by fall 2014; prior postdoctoral or college teaching experience is beneficial.
