General Statement of Duties: Provides reference to youth, parents, and caregivers. Develops library collection. Supervises planning and programs for children and teens. General Statement of Duties: The Library Assistant performs many support activities involved in operating a library by assisting the professional librarians following established rules and procedures and policies. Reference Services Internship Program - West Hartford Public Library

Reference Services Internship Program - West Hartford Public Library welcomes applications from MLS candidates for its internship program. The program has been designed to provide practical, on-the-job experience to individuals pursuing a career in reference service. Applicants must have completed at least four graduate level library science courses before the start date of their internship including a reference services course. The successful applicant will be paid a stipend of $4375 for 250 hours of work over approximately 5 months starting in January. The intern will have the opportunity to shadow librarians at a fast-paced reference desk and will assist with the implementation of a special project focusing on Collection Management Technology. In addition, the intern will help with other departmental projects such as collection and website development, digitization projects, subject bibliographies, and other projects as assigned. Although the intern will work primarily in the Adult Division of the Noah Webster Library located at 20 South Main Street, s/he will do a rotation in each of the library’s two branches as well as other library divisions to gain a broader understanding of public library operations. This internship program is funded through the generous support of the West Hartford Public Library Foundation’s Thomas F. Kilfoil Fund. Eligibility and requirements: Enrollment in a Master of Library Science Program. Public Services Librarian - Allen Music Library, University of Hartford, West Hartford. Position Summary: Provides formal and informal bibliographic instruction to students, faculty and staff. Supervises circulation, reserves, stack maintenance and equipment operations in the music/dance library. Assists library patrons in their research using print, online and audiovisual resources in music and dance. Recommends public service policies for the Allen Library to Head of Allen Library and Mortensen Library's Head of Reference and Public Services. Helps develop, enhance, and/or test information search tools. Provides recommendations for title development of the print and online reference collection and assists in the overall maintenance of the collection. Maintains awareness of trends and advances in the field through attendance at relevant meetings or seminars as well as through regular examination of literature in the field. Participates in relevant professional organizations. Serves on internal and external committees as appropriate. Maintains statistics and develops accurate reports for the Head of the Allen Library. Circulation Shelving Manager - Trinity College Library, Hartford. Coordinates library stacks maintenance activities. These include shelving, paging, collection shifts, and inventory control. Manages student assistants, assists library service desk operations, and maintains public equipment. Oversees general building operations during assigned evening and weekend hours. Closes the building at the end of the day by overseeing or performing the announcements, walkthroughs, and security checks to ensure the building is secure. Periodically walks through the building during the shift to observe the safety of our readers and collections and works with Campus Safety and other staff when problems arise. Qualifications: High school graduate, further education and library experience preferred; good communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills; patience and tact when working with the public; good computer skills, including the ability to learn local library circulation software; ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Ability to bend, lift, reach, and be able to push heavy book trucks; lift boxes up to 25 lbs. Salary: $15.60 per hour plus benefits package.
