TT at Mount Allison University

The Physics Department at Mount Allison University invites applications for a tenure-track position, with primary responsibilities for teaching and research in the area of astronomy. Applicants must possess a Ph.D. in astronomy, astrophysics, or a closely related area, and have a strong commitment to undergraduate teaching and research. The successful candidate will teach courses in our undergraduate program in the areas of astronomy, astrophysics, and general physics. The successful candidate will have a rigorous research program capable of both attracting external funding and involving undergraduate students. Mount Allison University is a highly rated, primarily undergraduate institution with an active and diverse Physics Department. Mount Allison's on-campus observatory offers opportunities for teaching, outreach, and some niche research. The ability to work in an observatory setting would be an asset. The appointment will be made at the rank of Assistant Professor and will commence on July 1, 2014, subject to budgetary approval.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Compton Community College District is seeking an innovative individual whose focus is student learning for a full-time, tenure-track position in Astronomy and Physics for the El Camino College Compton Center. Course assignments meet general education requirements in science and include lower division courses in the Solar System, Stars and Galaxies, astronomy laboratory and array of physics courses from descriptive to calculus-based physics. Initial assignment will be in astronomy and descriptive physics. Duties associated with the position include participation in a variety of campus and divisional activities such as faculty meetings, committee work, student activities, office hours, student learning outcomes and assessment, curriculum/instructional development and program review. Earlham College anticipates hiring a full-time, tenure-track position in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning in Fall 2014.

Earlham is a liberal arts college of about 1200 students and is affiliated with the Society of Friends (Quakers); approximately 11% of the students are Quakers. We try to combine the finest liberal arts education with an environment shaped by historic Quaker commitments.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
The Physics Department requires a candidate with a passion for Astronomy. Teaching load typically includes a Descriptive Astronomy course each semester, an upper-level Astronomy course every other year, and a mix of introductory and upper-level Physics.

In addition to teaching, the successful candidate will develop a research program that can attract and involve undergraduate students. Our department has three FTEs with active research programs in computational biophysics and laser, atomic and optical science. Earlham's facilities include local cluster computing resources, a teaching observatory, and a natural history museum with a planetarium.

Experience and Qualifications
Preference will go to applicants who have completed (or are presently finalizing a dissertation for) a Ph.D. in Astronomy, Astrophysics, Physics or a closely related field. Earlham holds excellence in teaching as its most important criterion, so as we review applications we will be looking for evidence of a strong interest in teaching at the undergraduate level.

Earlham is willing to allow faculty to step outside their original academic fields. The Department of Physics and Astronomy, http://www.physics.appstate.edu, invites applications for a tenure-track position in astronomy at the Assistant Professor level to begin August, 2014. Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in Astronomy, Physics or a related field by the time the position begins in mid-July.

Candidates must have a strong commitment to excellence in undergraduate education and are expected to develop a research program that, in addition to involving undergraduate and M.S. students, can attract and maintain external funding. Responsibilities will include advancing astronomical research in the department, teaching astronomy and physics courses, and service activities including advising. Preference will be given to candidates who (a) can show evidence of teaching excellence at the university level, and (b) will implement a research program involving facilities available at the departments Dark Sky Observatory (DSO). The observatory hosts 32- and 18-inch telescopes with imaging and spectrographic capabilities as well three robotic photometric telescopes (6-, 14- and 17-inch). The department offers the following degrees: a B.S. in Applied Physics, a B.A. in Physics, an M.S. in Engineering Physics, as well as three tracks in a Profession Science Masters degree program. The department has 14 tenure-track faculty members, approximately 150 undergraduate majors, and 22 Masters students (including, currently, 3 astronomy graduate students). Appalachian State University is a member institution of the 16 campus University of North Carolina System. Term Position at George Mason U, Fairfax VA



Term Instructor/Assistant/Associate Professor - Physics and STEM Program

The George Mason University, College of Science invites applications for a Term Instructor or Assistant/Associate Professor position to support the School of Physics, Astronomy and Computational Sciences (SPACS) as well as our STEM program. This is a 12-month instructional faculty position beginning in fall 2013 with the possibility of yearly renewal based on performance.

Responsibilities:

The selected candidate will teach physics courses in SPACS and also work with the STEM Accelerator program to increase undergraduate student's success from the time a student enters Mason until the time the student graduates and starts a career. As such, the selected applicant will have significant contact with students.

The position is split between teaching (2:2 load), advising students, coordination of tutoring, and developing and utilizing learning technology. The selected candidate will work closely with the College of Science STEM Accelerator program activities throughout the year including participation in summer institutes and camps, outreach to local high schools and community colleges, and participation in mentoring students in undergraduate research.

Qualifications:

Applicants should have a minimum of Ph.D. in physics, or related sciences; and teaching experience at the college level.

Salary: Commensurate with education and experience.

Astro VAP at College of Charleston

The Department of Physics and Astronomy at the College of Charleston has a Visiting Assistant Professor position in astronomy available for the 2013-14 academic year. The successful applicant must have a Ph.D. in astrophysics or a closely-related field and must be able to accept legal employment in the United States. Preference will be given to candidates interested in maintaining an experimental program using our local observatory facilities and the robotic telescopes. The teaching load is 12 contact hours per week through a combination of astronomy lectures and lab. Enrollment in each introductory astronomy lecture is 48 students per semester with lab sizes of 24 students. POSITION DESCRIPTION & QUALIFICATIONS: Heartland Community College invites applications for a tenure-track physics and mathematics faculty position anticipated to begin Fall 2013. Current course offerings in the physics department include conceptual physics, both algebra and calculus based introductory physics sequences, and astronomy. Current course offerings in the math department include developmental math through differential equations and linear algebra. The College has implemented a nationally recognized comprehensive redesign of our developmental math curriculum following the Emporium Model.
This position requires a minimum of a masters degree in physics, as well as 18 hours of graduate work in mathematics and/or closely related mathematics coursework. Candidates must have demonstrated excellence in teaching and institutional service as well as ability to effectively collaborate in curriculum and program development. Teaching experience in higher education, especially at a community college, is strongly desired.
