POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Compton Community College District is seeking an innovative individual whose focus is student learning for a full-time, tenure-track position in Astronomy and Physics for the El Camino College Compton Center. Course assignments meet general education requirements in science and include lower division courses in the Solar System, Stars and Galaxies, astronomy laboratory and array of physics courses from descriptive to calculus-based physics. Initial assignment will be in astronomy and descriptive physics. Duties associated with the position include participation in a variety of campus and divisional activities such as faculty meetings, committee work, student activities, office hours, student learning outcomes and assessment, curriculum/instructional development and program review. Contribute to the growth and development of both astronomy and physics at the Center. Assignment may include teaching courses during day and evening hours including weekends. Selected candidates will be invited for an interview, which will include a teaching demonstration on an assigned topic.
Job Qualifications:
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor’s in Physics AND Master’s degree in Astronomy or Astrophysics; OR
Bachelor’s in Astronomy AND Master’s degree in Physics; OR
The equivalent - Candidates not possessing the required qualifications as stated above, must complete the supplemental page of the district application and explain in detail how their qualifications are equivalent to those above. Candidates with no Astronomy degree must have completed at least 12 units of upper division and/or graduate Astronomy courses. OR
Valid California Community College Credential in appropriate subject.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Recent college teaching experience in astronomy and physics in a multicultural environment;
Demonstrated ability to develop a variety of effective teaching techniques and assessment methods;
Ability to engage student interest to support a variety of learning styles;
Ability to promote the use of instructional technology in curriculum delivery;
Effective oral and written communication skills.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Full time, tenure-track teaching position effective January 16, 2014. Offer and acceptance of employment is subject to verification of all information provided on the employment application, credential(s), transcripts, fingerprint results, and tuberculosis examination as required.
