Library Assistant, Full-Time - Enfield Public Library. Hourly Rate: $20.18 . General Statement of Duties: The Library Assistant performs many support activities involved in operating a library by assisting the professional librarians following established rules and procedures and policies. May assist in the administration of a branch in the absence of a professional librarian. Library Assistants generally work in both technical and user services. User services work is directly with the public to help them find the information needed. Technical services is acquiring and preparing material for use and dealing less frequently with the public. An employee in this class shall perform routine general library work and may acquire proficiency in only one of the general specialized areas of library work. Library Assistants may work on special projects. Supervision Received: Works under the general direction and supervision of the Head of Circulation who issues instructions, spot checks work or requires cross-checking by other personnel, but has some latitude for the exercise of independent judgment and initiative. Work collegially and effectively with the library’s professional and support staff as part of the library team. 10. Librarian - U.S. Coast Guard Academy, New London. Team Leader, Reference, Instruction , Public Services. Position Summary: This position is located in the Library of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, New London, Connecticut, a four year, accredited, degree-granting institution and center of leadership development for the Coast Guard. As the Head of Reference and Instruction the incumbent is responsible for delivering quality reference and instruction services required to support the education and training outcomes of the Institution. The incumbent is expected to be an articulate advocate of information literacy issues, both within and outside the Academy. The incumbent is further expected to advise the library Director on issues and new developments in the areas of reference and instruction services as provided in an undergraduate institution. The incumbent oversees circulation and inter-library loan. Major Duties and Responsibilities: 1) Acts as the Head of Reference and Instruction and as such is the library's expert in the areas of reference, information research and instruction. Participates in other areas of the library to ensure adequate service in these areas. 2) Plans, organizes, and oversees the functions comprising the reference, instruction, circulation, and interlibrary loan sections of the library providing the leadership and initiative to run the section. 3) Establishes reference, bibliographic instruction, circulation, and interlibrary loan policy and procedures, in consultation with the Director, determining priorities as needed. 4) Trains and oversees staff assigned to the section and assists the Director in their performance evaluations. 5) Prepares administrative reports, maintains statistics and provides other administrative assistance to the Director as required. 6) Serves as senior reference and research librarian, providing comprehensive reference services to cadets, faculty, and other eligible users, including on-line literature searches of computer data bases, and as such is the library's expert in the areas of reference, information research and instruction. 7) Responsible for the quality and currency of the reference collection and recommends materials in other areas as a need is perceived. 8) As one of the Academic Division’s proponents and experts for the Division's Information Literacy Outcome, the incumbent integrates information literacy skills into the 4 year curriculum both at the core and major level. Provides instruction to faculty in the value and utilization of information retrieval and evaluation skills in the life-long learning process and provides instruction to them in the best ways of integrating this outcome into their course work. 9) Assists the Director in conducting assessments of the reference and instruction programs, including assisting in the analysis and interpretation of data when necessary.10) Serves on library and Academy committees as appropriate. 11) Actively participates on any assigned teams. Library Assistant V, Access Services - Olin Library, Wesleyan University. Multi departmental support. Reporting to the Head of Access Services, this position is responsible for providing support to the Olin Inter-library Loan, Olin Reference, Olin Reserves and Olin Circulation departments. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: Olin Library Reserve Dept: Process electronic reserves for the Olin Library Reserve Department. This includes photocopying, scanning, and linking materials to be placed on-line using Docutek electronic reserve software. On Sundays provide sole supervision to the student worker in the reserve department. Olin Interlibrary Loan Department: Process borrowing and lending requests for the Interlibrary Loan Dept. using ILLIAD software. This includes verifying bibliographic citations using multiple on-line databases, ordering materials using ILLIAD and OCLC FirstSearch software, processing lending and borrowing overdues, providing assistance to 10-12 student workers, and assisting patrons. Olin Reference Dept: Supervise the work of 1-2 student workers in the Olin Reference Dept. This includes interviewing, hiring and training the student workers and submitting the hours the student worker worked using PeopleSoft. Ensure coverage of the student workers role when there is no student worker available. Order supplies for the reference department as needed. Circulation Department: Staff Olin Circulation Office on Sunday during the fall, spring and summer semesters. Sunday duties include: opening the library, providing sole supervision to student workers in Circulation. Staff Olin Circulation Office in the evenings during the fall, spring and summer semesters; updating patron records using Voyager circulation software and assisting patrons. Provide support for the Olin Circulation Department staff Monday-Thursday. Other Perform other similar and related duties as assigned, making adjustments as needed as department work volume varies. University Assistant - J. Eugene Smith Library, Access Services. Temporary (3-4 weeks with possible renewal), part-time position. HOURS: This University Assistant position is contracted to provide Access Services Desk coverage per semester or session up to 19 hours per week, primarily daytime hours, though flexibility in schedule is desirable. The exact schedule will be established by the Head of Public Services in coordination with the schedules of other University Assistants. If the contract for this position is renewed, the scheduled hours may change for any subsequent contracted period dependent on the Library’s coverage needs and other University Assistant schedules. DUTIES: Under the direction of the Access Services Librarian (circulation, reserve, interlibrary loan) or other full time Access Services staff members, the University Assistant will help to: Supervise the operations of the Access Services desk, which includes providing circulation, reserve, and interlibrary loan assistance to patrons, and supervising of students working at the desk charging, discharging and renewing library materials, collecting fines and clearing patron records, etc. Monitor the Library building as scheduled. Depending on hours scheduled, this may include working with and supervising students clearing the Library of patrons at closing times, and closing and securing the Library after the Library is empty, and working with Library staff, Campus Police and the Willimantic Police as need arises to resolve Library Code of Conduct and as well as security and safety issues. Perform routine maintenance of public copiers on all floors of the Library, including loading paper and toner, assisting patrons with copy machine problems, reporting copier breakdowns to the Director’s Office, etc. Train and supervise student workers in these functions. Perform routine maintenance of public printers as necessary, including loading paper, reporting printer breakdowns to the Director’s Office, posting “Out of Order” signs, showing patrons how to use the “pay-for- print system,” etc. Perform other duties as assigned by the Access Services Librarian, the Head of Public Services or the Library Director such as: share supervision of the Access Services Desk and student workers as necessary; create and/or edit bibliographic, item and patron records in the Library’s integrated system (CONSULS); participate in interlibrary loan, stacks management, Course Reserve Reading Collection maintenance; train student workers and assist with other tasks performed by the Access Services staff. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: The University Assistant must be able to: provide effective library services to students, faculty, and the general public; perform public services work with a diverse population of students, faculty and staff members, and community library users; work under stress, with courtesy, calmness and good judgment; work in a team environment with other library staff, as well as independently in an emergency staffing situation; work with the Library’s ILS and personal computer software to perform assigned functions; perform detailed work accurately; work evenings and weekends with great dependability if scheduled.
