Purpose
 
The Neutron Sciences Directorate (NScD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory operates the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR), the United States' highest flux reactor-based neutron source, and the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), the world's most intense pulsed accelerator-based neutron source. Together these facilities operate 24 instruments for neutron scattering research, each year carrying out in excess of 1,000 experiments in the physical, chemical, materials, biological and medical sciences for nearly 3,000 visiting scientists. Qualifications Required
Master’s degree in English, Communications, Journalism, or a scientific field (or Bachelor’s degree and extensive experience) and at least five years of experience producing communications products on science- and/or technology-related subjects required. Must have strong writing skills (will be expected to provide samples); excellent attention to detail; ability to understand, follow, and implement complex instructions; strong organizational skills, including ability to handle multiple assignments simultaneously; and excellent verbal communications skills. Must be able to prioritize and meet deadlines; have strong interpersonal skills and be comfortable working both independently and with all levels of researchers and staff in a team-based environment; and have strong skills in solving problems and developing and implementing solutions. Expertise in Microsoft Office products is also required. Scientific training or a background in science-related areas is desirable.
 
- Perform a leading role in producing timely communications materials for Neutron Sciences and ORNL for distribution to
Department of Energy, BES and for both general and targeted audiences
- Produce materials that will include, but not be limited to, science highlights, press releases, and web-distributed content
- Be able to understand and write about complex science-related topics and materials and work with senior scientists and senior managers to produce interesting and compelling science articles that will be distributed to multiple audiences
- Develop complex material into a form that readily conveys the importance and excitement of NScD’s activities to a broad audience
- Participate in every level of documentation regarding design and production of science materials, from gathering input to producing final copy
- Perform a final review of all documents for format and style before they are published or posted to the web
- Edit work of other writers for content, tone, appropriateness for audience, consistency, and clarity and to ensure compliance with customer requirements
- Work with other members of the customer's organization, Communications, and Creative Media to provide the support needed and product required by each customer
- Work with external media, including science and trade publications, on coverage of NScD programs
- Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirements
- Maintain a strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics
 
 

Desired Skills & Experience

Several years of experience in scientific community or DOE national laboratory are preferred.

Description


Position Summary:

The Science Communications Specialist is responsible for independently developing high-profile editorial content for a variety of informational channels that showcases the value of Berkeley Lab science, research, and technology to specific audiences and to society at large.

Key Responsibilities:

Translate highly complex science—from physics and cosmology to nanoscience -- into lay friendly language for various high-profile communication outlets, including news releases, online news center, online newsletters, social media and related endeavors
Identify, pursue and write stories that build support for and awareness of Berkeley Lab
Spot topic trends and create storytelling opportunities that exploit what is happening in a national news context with a Berkeley Lab perspective
Cultivate media of all types through astute pitching of stories, diligent follow through and frequent interaction
Understand how to leverage content across different platforms and to different audiences by varying story length, level of difficulty and style of language
Knowledge of – and participation in -- engagement and awareness campaigns, particularly those with a clear call to action and metrics.
Maintain current awareness of scientific editorial practices, Berkeley Lab programs, and policies that affect current or future editorial projects.

Skills required to succeed:

Minimum 8 years of experience communicating science to various audiences or an equivalent combination of experience and Bachelor’s degree in English, Journalism, Science, Communications, History, or related field
Proven ability to translate complex scientific research into understandable, lay friendly language
Understanding of and success in pitching and delivering science stories to the science media as well as shaping science stories so that they appeal to non-science media as well
Fluency with and appreciation for social media, with a track record in having contributed to successful engagement with online audiences
Experience with crisis communications and breaking news
Demonstrated success in contributing editorial expertise to and leveraging stories for online vehicles
Appreciation for the need to market science and evidence of having succeeded in shaping opinions of target audiences
Ability to interact successfully with scientists in different disciplines and to generate confidence in doing so
Willingness to work collaboratively within a “beat” system or as part of Public Affairs-wide teams, assume different responsibilities, and stay on deadline
Belief that science is a positive and hopeful force in society
Competence in the use of word processing software, communications software, and other ancillary software (such as graphics or database) needed to produce high-quality documents in the shortest possible time.
Proven ability to proofread highly technical and complex documents with an extremely high degree of accuracy.
Proven ability to work efficiently, collaboratively, and cooperatively as a member of a team.
Demonstrated ability to produce results in a timely fashion toward meeting desired results.
Ability to change priorities when necessary and to adjust levels of effort accordingly.

Library Aide II - Canton Public Library

Library Aide II - Canton Public Library. The Town of Canton is seeking applications for the position of Library Aide II. The position is 20 hours per week and pays $15.27 per hour. Applicants must be able to work evenings and some weekends. The Library Aide II provides technical and clerical assistance to library staff and to the public. Information Services and Technology Specialist - Old Lyme Phoebe Griffin Noyes Library. Full time library professional position. Phoebe Griffin Noyes Library is located in southeastern Connecticut, serving a population of 7,500 and is a member of the LION consortium with a shared network using III’s Millennium ILS. We are looking for an individual with excellent reference skills, who is interested in providing personalized customer service, has the ability to manage multiple priorities and is committed to the mission of the public library. Candidates must be able to perform all functions related to the delivery of reference and information services. Primary responsibilities include reference service, readers’ advisory, collection development, and bibliographic instruction. In addition, overseeing the website and emerging technology needs of the library, and assisting the director with marketing library services and programs. The Information Specialist also performs interlibrary loans and services to the homebound. Cross trained in Circulation Department activities as well. Minimum Qualifications: Baccalaureate degree with a Masters degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited school and experience indicating the ability to perform required duties. Technology Services Librarian - Middlebury Public Library seeks a full-time Technology Services Librarian to manage its website, cover circulation desk functions, set up audio/visual presentations and maintain equipment. Librarian I: Adult Services - Town of Bloomfield. $30.62/hrly. Seeking a dynamic, technologically proficient adult service librarian. The successful candidate will be responsible for computer classes for the public, adult collection development, and managing the adult literacy program. Additional tasks include computer maintenance and troubleshooting support, data base coordination and an electronic newsletter. This is a full-time 35 hour per week position that includes some evenings and Saturday hours.
