Associate/Full Professor (Tenure Eligible)

North Dakota State University invites inquiries, nominations, and applications for a 10-month tenure-eligible position to begin July 1, 2014 or as negotiated. We seek a senior faculty member with expertise and leadership capability to help establish a Center for Instructional Excellence and Innovation that will facilitate activities and programs focused on research-based instructional and pedagogical support across the NDSU campus.

RESPONSIBILITIES: The position is eligible for tenure. Responsibilities include: Establishing and directing a Center for Instructional Excellence and Innovation (CIEI), teaching courses, research, and service. The Director will provide leadership in the development and support of innovative and emerging pedagogies across the institution including use of virtual and immersive learning. The successful candidate will also direct the interdisciplinary STEM Education PhD program and provide leadership for the existing Center for Science and Mathematics Education at NDSU, which provides infrastructure to support multiple K-20 science, mathematics, and engineering education projects that are collaborative in nature. Women and traditionally underrepresented groups are encouraged to apply.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
• Earned doctorate in an appropriate education, STEM or closely related field.
• A record of research, teaching, and service that warrants tenure and a rank of associate or full professor at NDSU.
• Success securing grants and external funding.
• Strong experience and leadership in research-based instructional support, including peer review of teaching, faculty mentorship, and/or similar pedagogical support.
• Demonstrated leadership at the collegiate level.
• A record of excellent collegiate teaching.
• Expertise in the instructional use of technology.
• Demonstrated expertise in the scholarship of teaching.
• Knowledge and interest in educational research methods.
• Evidence of effective oral and written communication and effective interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work collaboratively.
• Evidence of experience with STEM educational programs.

• Demonstrated ability to work closely with and gain cooperation of university faculty from diverse disciplines.

E-learning officer at Xian Jiaotong-Liverpool University

The Learning and Teaching Enhancement (LTEO) of Xian Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU) is looking to hire an E-Learning officer. As part of the LTEO team, the E-Learning officer will provide support for learning and teaching through the use of technology.

Responsibilities of the E-Learning officer will include:

1) Evaluating the impact of technology-enhanced learning on campus.
2) Recommending the adoption of new learning technologies; coordinating and facilitating the effective implementation of such technologies.
3) Providing consultation to academic staff seeking to incorporate e-learning components into their modules.
4) Supporting staff use of existing XJTLU learning technologies such as the virtual learning environment, in-class student response systems, and anti-plagiarism software.
5) Advising academic staff and the administration on classroom space design as it relates to technology.
6) Working with the LTEO team to promote best practices in the area of e-Learning on campus.
7) Contributing to University and department action plans and committees relating to learning and teaching enhancement; collaborating with LTEO team members to implement the office’s operational plan.

The position reports to the Manager of the Learning and Teaching Enhancement Office.

The salary range for the position is 3000-4500 US dollar per month plus benefits and other living allowances. Visa support will be provided to foreign hires.

Qualifications:
A PhD and two years relevant work experience OR a Masters and five years relevant work experience in educational development or learning technology. Applicants with a bachelor’s degree and an exceptionally strong professional record will also be considered. Work experience in higher education learning and teaching enhancement issues is a plus.

Xian Jiaotong-Liverpool University was founded in 2006. It was China’s first institution to offer bachelor-level degrees accredited by both UK and Chinese governing bodies. Director of Teacher Education/STEM, Unity College

Unity College seeks a dynamic STEM educator to serve as Director of Teacher Education for one of Maines top science teacher certification programs. This is a 9 month appointment at the assistant, associate or full professor level. The successful candidate will provide leadership in the development of a Masters degree in Sustainability Science Education.

Required qualifications are a terminal degree in curriculum and instruction, science education or a related field and a minimum of 3 years experience teaching 7-12 science. The ideal candidate will also have a commitment to sustainability education, strong content background in life or physical sciences, experience teaching with technology, distance education and graduate programs. Experience with environmental education, adventure education, or teaching in informal settings is a plus. Teaching responsibilities will include graduate and undergraduate classes in methods of teaching science, instruction and assessment, and additional courses in areas of expertise, possibly including science content courses. Additional responsibilities will include advising students, serving on faculty committees, and maintaining an active research program.  Unity College has a strong commitment to transdisciplinary and place-based, experiential education as teaching methods and integral parts of professional preparation.

Professional academic advisor, UC Riverside

Position Information:
Under direction of the Math/Physical Sciences Supervising Advisor and as part of the College of Natural and Agricultural Sciences Undergraduate Academic Advising Center (CNAS UAAC), the incumbent is responsible for academic advising of undergraduate students in the Mathematical and Physical Sciences (Mathematics, statistics, Chemistry, Earth Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Physics) using the principles of developmental academic advising and knowledge of teaching and learning theory working to promote student development and academic success. The primary areas of responsibility include: advisement of potential and enrolled students; monitoring of each student's progress toward degree completion; informing students, academic advisors, faculty and staff members of the policies and procedures pertaining to undergraduate student affairs; referring students to appropriate support services; analyzing academic trends and working with other professional academic advisors and departments to meet student advising needs. Participates in the preparation and/or maintenance of descriptive materials for majors. Responsible for representing the CNAS UAAC at outreach and retention activities including recruitment, orientation, and advising events including, but not limited to Highlander Orientation, Discover/Highlander Days, and college fairs.
Minimum Requirements:

Job Responsibilities
The Dean serves as the chief academic, administrative, and budgetary officer of the MNS School and reports directly to the Colleges Provost.  The MNS Dean:
  • Works with the Schools faculty, College administration, the deans of other Schools, and external partners to promote and catalyze improvements to the MNS Schools teaching/research capabilities, curriculum, unique and interdisciplinary programs, and facilities.
  • Serves as a model and mentor to both tenured and tenure-track faculty members.
  • Supervises all MNS faculty, Department Chairs and coordinators, and administrative staff.
  • Recommends hiring, reappointment, promotion and tenure, and other personnel actions as necessary.
  • Provides oversight and assistance during the hiring process of a high quality and diverse faculty and staff.
  • Promotes scholarly research activities of faculty and faculty-student collaborations.
  • Assists students with requests, exceptions, complaints, and the resolution of grievances.
  • Serves as an effective communicator and liaison to both internal and external constituencies, including fund-raising activities in conjunction with the Advancement office. 
  • Recommends budget to the Provost, and oversees the allocation and dispensation of School funds.
  • Represents the interests of the MNS faculty.
  • Teaches a course each semester in his/her discipline.
Minimum Qualifications
Earned doctorate by an accredited institution in one of the scientific disciplines represented by the MNS School with sufficient academic credentials to merit appointment to the rank of full professor.  The successful candidate will have a proven and effective track record at the level of department chair or above that demonstrates the candidates commitment to innovation and improvement.

Each additional year of approved work experience may be substituted for one year of required formal education.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Master’s degree preferred.
License/Certification: Valid driver’s license or access to transportation.

Executive Director at Maine STEM Council

The Maine Science Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Council is seeking qualified applicants for its first Executive Director (ED). Established by the State of Maine in September 2011, the STEM Council is comprised of 16 members appointed by the Governor serving two-year terms. The Council is charged with developing strategies for enhancing science, technology, engineering and mathematics education from prekindergarten through postsecondary education.

The ED reports to the STEM Council and coordinates the development of a plan or roadmap for STEM education and workforce development in Maine; the design of a dashboard of indicators for monitoring the plan; the adoption, implementation, and oversight of the plan; the support of the Council’s work; and positioning the Council to win a substantial grant to enhance a number of Maine STEM and workforce initiatives.

An ideal candidate would be an innovative, collaborative leader with strong management skills deeply experienced in STEM education and workforce issues; skillful in building close working relationships with STEM leaders and partner organizations; committed to reaching the STEM Council’s goals; and comfortable leading a major proposal writing process. Recognizing that candidates are unlikely to have every indicated credential, experience, and skill, we seek candidates who have all or most of the following professional experiences and personal qualities:


Expected Qualifications: MA/MS in educational leadership, learning science, a STEM field, or a related discipline; experience leading an educational group or organization, and familiarity with national STEM education and workforce policy and statewide initiatives in Maine.

Preferred Qualifications: Ed.D. or Ph.D. in above fields; significant background in STEM education and workforce development as a faculty member or administrator at a college/university, a nonprofit organization, or a government agency; experience conducting staff development work with teachers or informal STEM educators; and experience in the grant process.

Postdoc at Georgetown

Georgetown University’s Center for New Designs in Learning in Scholarship (CNDLS) invites applications for a postdoctoral fellow position to support CNDLS’ Doyle Faculty Fellows program and the Apprenticeship in Teaching program. The position is 3/4-time. The successful candidate might supplement this appointment with an adjunct teaching appointment (no more than one course per semester) at Georgetown, but this depends on the qualifications of the candidate and the needs of the university. This 75% time position has a one-year term with potential for one renewal. The successful candidate must have a Ph.D. (open field), university teaching (or TA) experience, and a demonstrated enthusiasm for issues of pedagogical practice. The successful candidate will also have excellent writing, communication, research, and organizational skills as well as the ability to work well independently and collaboratively. Experience with and interest in program assessment and evaluation a plus.

The Doyle Faculty Fellows program (http://doyle.georgetown.edu/curricular/facultyfellows/) works with Georgetown faculty to integrate themes of difference and diversity in the work of their courses. The postdoctoral fellow is part of a small team of CNDLS colleagues who support this work with an annual cohort of 12-18 faculty from departments across the university. The Apprenticeship in Teaching (AT) program (https://cndls.georgetown.edu/atprogram/) prepares graduate students to serve as teachers. The postdoctoral fellow serves as a key resource for graduate students interested in teaching through facilitating workshops and providing feedback and mentoring.

Responsibilities include supporting faculty in course redesign and assessment, developing and facilitating workshops for graduate students on curricular design and teaching practice, reading and assessing graduate student teaching tasks (e.g., syllabi and teaching philosophy statements), researching best practices in higher ed pedagogy, writing documents related to the work of the programs, and assisting with program administration and strategic planning.

The postdoctoral fellow can expect professional development in a collaborative environment and would gain significant experience in the area of faculty development. He or she will have the opportunity to work with a wide range of academic and institutional departments.

STEM Education and Assessment Fellows
University of Colorado Boulder

Applications are invited for two post-doctoral associates in the newly formed Center for STEM Learning at the University of Colorado, Boulder. The successful candidates will work on educational transformation through a project focused on institution wide transformation, sponsored by the American Association of Universities. The overall project seeks to promote the use of research based instructional and assessment strategies.  Responsibilities will primarily center on supporting faculty in the change process by identifying appropriate material resources to support assessment of teaching in multiple STEM disciplines, working closely with department leads to provide professional consultations with participating faculty on the use of identified materials, supporting the implementation of assessment measures by managing data collection and analysis, and consulting with faculty to reflect on the results.  Associates will also work with project staff to develop an online campus-wide, potentially national, portal to assist faculty in finding libraries of educational measures, easing use of such measures and sharing results.  Opportunities will also exist for working toward promoting the use of evidence-based measures of teaching impact and conducting research on the process of institutional transformation.   The Fellows will collaborate with a broad group of engaging and nationally renowned faculty, post-docs, and graduate students across multiple STEM departments at the University of Colorado.  The overall project also includes studies of institutional transformation, and provides opportunities for postdocs to participate in studies of individual and institutional uptake of new assessment tools and practices.

Qualifications: The successful candidates will have a strong disciplinary background in a STEM area and extensive experience in education research. Experience in physics, biology or mechanical engineering is a plus as these are the initial departments on the project. The appointment is a one-year, renewable appointment with the preference that the successful candidate will be able to commit to the project for 2 years. The salary will be competitive and commensurate with experience.
