Associate/Full Professor (Tenure Eligible)

North Dakota State University invites inquiries, nominations, and applications for a 10-month tenure-eligible position to begin July 1, 2014 or as negotiated. We seek a senior faculty member with expertise and leadership capability to help establish a Center for Instructional Excellence and Innovation that will facilitate activities and programs focused on research-based instructional and pedagogical support across the NDSU campus.

RESPONSIBILITIES: The position is eligible for tenure. Responsibilities include: Establishing and directing a Center for Instructional Excellence and Innovation (CIEI), teaching courses, research, and service. The Director will provide leadership in the development and support of innovative and emerging pedagogies across the institution including use of virtual and immersive learning. The successful candidate will also direct the interdisciplinary STEM Education PhD program and provide leadership for the existing Center for Science and Mathematics Education at NDSU, which provides infrastructure to support multiple K-20 science, mathematics, and engineering education projects that are collaborative in nature. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
• Earned doctorate in an appropriate education, STEM or closely related field.
• A record of research, teaching, and service that warrants tenure and a rank of associate or full professor at NDSU.
• Success securing grants and external funding.
• Strong experience and leadership in research-based instructional support, including peer review of teaching, faculty mentorship, and/or similar pedagogical support.
• Demonstrated leadership at the collegiate level.
• A record of excellent collegiate teaching.
• Expertise in the instructional use of technology.
• Demonstrated expertise in the scholarship of teaching.
• Knowledge and interest in educational research methods.
• Evidence of effective oral and written communication and effective interpersonal skills.

Director of Teacher Education/STEM, Unity College

Unity College seeks a dynamic STEM educator to serve as Director of Teacher Education for one of Maines top science teacher certification programs. This is a 9 month appointment at the assistant, associate or full professor level. The successful candidate will provide leadership in the development of a Masters degree in Sustainability Science Education.

Required qualifications are a terminal degree in curriculum and instruction, science education or a related field and a minimum of 3 years experience teaching 7-12 science. The ideal candidate will also have a commitment to sustainability education, strong content background in life or physical sciences, experience teaching with technology, distance education and graduate programs. Experience with environmental education, adventure education, or teaching in informal settings is a plus. Teaching responsibilities will include graduate and undergraduate classes in methods of teaching science, instruction and assessment, and additional courses in areas of expertise, possibly including science content courses. Additional responsibilities will include advising students, serving on faculty committees, and maintaining an active research program.  Unity College has a strong commitment to transdisciplinary and place-based, experiential education as teaching methods and integral parts of professional preparation.

The Department of Curriculum and Instruction, at The University of Texas at Austin, invites applications for two tenure-track positions in our STEM Education program, to begin Fall 2014. One position will be at the Assistant Professor level and the other position will be either at the Assistant or Associate level.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • A doctorate in STEM Education, Mathematics or Science Education, Learning Sciences,
  • or related field
  • Demonstrated excellence or potential for excellence in research and teaching

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Ability to teach Elementary Math and/or Science Methods
  • Ability to teach in the UTeach program, a secondary level teacher preparation program

Areas of research specialization are open, but we anticipate that at least one position will focus on either elementary science and/or math. Additionally, we would value colleagues with expertise in research on teacher education, bilingual education, or use of technology in teaching and learning. POSITION: Purdue University is transforming its STEM teacher education as it exists today-from a model of instruction in demarcated subject areas to a model in which teachers learn to integrate scientific inquiry, technological design, engineering design, and mathematical analysis as pedagogical approaches to STEM instruction. To this end, the Colleges of Education, Science, Technology, Engineering, and Agriculture at Purdue University invite applications for six full-time, tenure-track, jointly appointed positions at the level of assistant, associate, or full professor to join the new K-12 Integrated STEM Teacher Education Initiative.Specifically, we are seeking dynamic, innovative, and collaboration-oriented applicants for:

The integrated STEM teacher education initiative at Purdue is focused squarely on the teaching and learning of science and mathematics through the integration of engineering design and technological design. Successful candidates will be expected to make a strong contribution to advancing the integrated K-12 STEM teacher education initiative; build collaborative relationships with colleagues in the cluster hire and related disciplines; and provide leadership for ongoing efforts to transform K-12 teacher preparation in STEM disciplines.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants should have expertise related to K-12 teacher education in chosen field as well as innovative research, teaching and/or engagement plans in STEM integration. Preference will be given to applicants with K-12 teaching experience. We also welcome applicants who would bring expertise in diversity and equity related to STEM education.

POSITION DESCRIPTION: Successful candidates will receive a 10-month academic year appointment, with some potential for other funded work and/or teaching in the summer. In addition, start-up packages will be offered. The position responsibilities include:
  • Conducting signature collaborative research and disseminating results and ongoing findings via publications and presentations to local, state, national, and international professional organizations;
  • Seeking external funding in support of a focused research program aligned with the integrated STEM teacher education initiative as well as other strategic initiatives for the University; the Colleges of Education, Science, Technology, Engineering, and/or Agriculture; and centers including the Center for Advancing the Teaching and Learning of STEM Education (CATALyST), Discovery Learning Research Center (DLRC) and the Institute for P-12 Engineering Research and Learning (INSPIRE);
  • Teaching undergraduate-level pedagogy and/or content courses as well as graduate courses in majority appointment, including the possibility for creating and co-teaching new integrated STEM teacher education courses and/or transforming existing courses to include more integration of scientific inquiry, technological design, engineering design, and mathematical analysis;
  • Recruiting, advising, and mentoring master's and doctoral students;
  • Affiliating with the Center for Advancing the Teaching and Learning of STEM Education (CATALyST) to support emerging integrated STEM teacher education programs.

Postdoc in STEM Education at University of Arizona

The University of Arizona seeks a post- doctoral research associate to conduct assessment work in the 3-year AAU STEM Education Project.  The project goals are to (1) revise five introductory level STEM majors’ courses to align with evidence based teaching practices, and (2) positively impact STEM department cultures to sustain long-term commitment to evidence-based teaching practices.  The individual selected for the position will report directly to the Associate Vice Provost for Instruction and Assessment and will work closely with the faculty leaders of the project.  Duties and responsibilities will include: (1) collecting and analyzing assessment data across the AAU STEM project courses, (2) collaborating on assessment with faculty members in the Instructional Development Teams,  (3) working with the Vice Provost and the Associate Vice Provost to assess progress of department level cultural changes with regard to evidence-based teaching in STEM, (4) preparing manuscripts for publication in research journals, and (5) assisting the AAU STEM faculty leaders in grant proposal writing.  Minimum qualifications include: (1) a Ph.D. in science, education, or a related field, completed within the last five years, (2) excellent written and verbal communication skills, and (3) research experience in a postsecondary education project.  Preferred qualifications include: (1) skill in the use of statistical and textual analysis software, (2) research experience in the area of assessment in STEM, and (3) publications in the area of assessment. Oregon State University seeks a full-time Director to grow its university-wide Center for Research on Lifelong STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) Learning.

This position provides a rare opportunity to broadly envision the future of STEM learning – learning that occurs across one’s lifespan, both in and out of school, supporting professional and personal interests and across all demographics. OSU seeks a skilled and visionary research leader who can, through this new Center, build a research foundation that brings OSU into a position of national prominence and influence. Building from OSU’s Research Agenda and Strategic Plan, the successful candidate will be charged with promoting innovation and improvement in STEM education through fundamental and applied research in lifelong STEM learning both within and beyond the OSU community. The Director will work with Center staff and OSU faculty to build infrastructure for attracting additional research funding and broadly sharing OSU research on the national and international stage.

The Center for Research on Lifelong STEM Learning was established in 2012 with a mission to conduct research and development that leads to enhanced understanding of the processes that underlie how individuals with diverse life circumstances and identities become lifelong STEM learners, STEM practitioners and STEM researchers as well as the structures and mechanisms that lead to achieving these outcomes.  The OSU Center is unique among STEM center counterparts in its focus on research and commitment to understanding learning across all settings (in and out of school) and across one’s lifespan. The ultimate role of the Director is to catalyze discovery and application of knowledge about STEM learning.

OSU is a regional, national, and international leader in the arena of lifelong STEM learning research. Many OSU faculty members are engaged in investigations ranging from STEM-related undergraduate and pre-college education to community-based investigations of STEM learning and public decision-making. The Center Director will lead efforts to significantly advance these capacities at OSU by initiating new, foundational lines of research, coordinating existing activities across disciplines, curricular levels and research areas and by providing a forum for the cross-pollination of ideas with a wider-base of expertise to address cross-cutting STEM-learning-related challenges.

The successful candidate must possess proven fund-raising experience and skills, particularly in areas relevant to the Center mission. A PhD. and superior skills in writing, listening, speaking, networking, collaboration, and substantial knowledge of the STEM learning/education policy landscape and current research literature, both in and outside of school, are required.

Qualified candidates must have credentials consistent with the expectations of a tenured faculty position in a tier one research university. The successful candidate can, at his or her discretion, negotiate a faculty position with an appropriate college and department prior to accepting the position; such a candidate will be subject to a full, but expedited, OSU tenure review. Achievement of tenure is not a requirement for the position.

Minimum Required Qualifications
  • PhD in a field relevant to STEM learning with 5 or more years conducting STEM relevant learning research in an academic setting.

  • Experience with administrative leadership including budget development and strategic planning.
  • Demonstrated ability to raise funds from both public and private sources; particularly important will be evidence of ability to raise monies for efforts consistent with the goals of the Center.
  • A demonstrated commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity.
Preferred Qualifications
  • National reputation as a STEM learning researcher.
  • STEM education policy experience.
  • Supervisory experience.
