Job Description: Responsible for technical and safety support to the Department of Physical Sciences (physics, physical science, geology, and astronomy) including supervision of the labs,equipment, and part-time technicians; acquires, constructs and maintains instructional equipment and supplies and maintains the laboratory and storage areas. Supports faculty in their course preparation and laboratory functions.

Duties of Position: Identifies and quantifies all supplies and equipment required for each laboratory experiment in all physics and physical science courses and some geology and astronomy courses and ensures that supplies and equipment are properly prepared. Devises new pieces of lab equipment, coordinating with faculty for class requirements.
Maintains and calibrates scientific instruments. Consults with department chairperson on equipment purchases; researches equipment upgrades. Responsible for all ordering of equipment and supplies as directed by the Department chair.
Oversees Department laboratories; assists faculty members during laboratory sessions and oversees quality control. Provides counsel and supervision to adjunct faculty regarding laboratory experiments and procedures.
Maintains the laboratories, stockroom, preparation room, and storage rooms in an orderly and neat condition by supervising the inventory, ordering, and storing of supplies and equipment. Maintains equipment database.
Provides short term laboratory supervision when instructor must leave the laboratory. Safeguards all sensitive materials such as tests, quizzes, scantron sheets, and department mail.
Evaluates hazards and assesses risks in procedures and supplies used in laboratory experiments. Responsible for preparation, storage, and disposal (in accordance with local, state, and federal regulations) of hazardous materials as needed. Maintains a file of Material Safety Data Sheets and other appropriate safety documentation. Monitors health and safety issues in the laboratories. Ensures that all safety equipment functions properly.
Coordinates with other areas of the College including repair for I.T. supported equipment and Physical Plant for building equipment and structural repairs.
Performs related duties as assigned by the Physical Science Department Chair.

Education Requirements: Associate Degree required or documented field experience in one of the following disciplines- Physics, Physical Science, Astronomy or Geology. Bachelor's Degree preferred

Experience Requirements: Hands-on experience in maintenance and repair of electronic and mechanical equipment, preferably in a laboratory environment. Working knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and data collection and analysis software (for example, LoggerPro, etc.) required.

The Department of Physics and Astronomy invites applications for a non-tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning August 1, 2014.  This new position is due to the growth of the Department and in support of the Universitys new Mechanical and Civil Engineering programs.  The successful candidate will be expected to teach at all levels in the physics curriculum and contribute to general education course offerings. Brief Description of Duties:
The Instructional Support Specialist will oversee and manage instructional laboratories in the Civil Engineering Program, as well as assist in teaching lab courses. The incumbent will be responsible for maintaining equipment in the civil engineering laboratories, supporting courses, supporting senior design projects, faculty research projects, and assisting with other lab courses as needed. The selected candidate will:
� Design and plan experiments and assist faculty in conducting laboratory activities. Make sure that lab equipment works properly and that necessary materials and supplies are prepared. Provide support to students during lab sessions.
� Maintain the sophisticated and critical equipment in the CE laboratories. Make sure that all the equipment in the laboratories are in working condition. Develop recommendations for laboratory improvements.
� Help students with their course projects. Teach students how to operate laboratory equipment for their projects. Operate laboratory equipment for students when necessary. Monitor students while they work with laboratory equipment for safety.
� Assist faculty and students with their research projects. Design and build research devices based on specifications from faculty and students. For example, assisting students with their senior design projects, including but not limited to, concrete canoe and steel bridge activities.
� Developing, implementing and maintaining safety standards, safety policies and controls for the laboratories.
� Other duties as assigned as appropriate to rank and department mission.

Planetarium/Physics Lab Technician, Pierce College, Fort Steilacoom campus

POSITION SUMMARY:
Under general supervision, the Planetarium and Physics Laboratory Technician will work on the Fort Steilacoom campus supporting the physics department laboratory and producing and presenting digital planetarium programs for the college, preK-12 school groups and community in the Pierce College Science Dome. The physics department offers several laboratory classes including conceptual physics and algebra/trigonometry based and calculus based introductory physics sequences. The Science Dome is a state of the art 58-seat digital planetarium. The Science Dome is used for astronomy presentations in Pierce College classes, regular public shows and visiting preK-12 field trips. However, the space is versatile and used for various other programs, both scientific and not scientific, in addition to presenting astronomy content. This position reports to the Associate Professor of Physics and Astronomy.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Planetarium Show Presentation: Conduct programs for preK-12 school groups, community groups, individuals, campus activities, classes and special events; communicate with students and visitors spanning a wide range of ages from preschoolers and up; assist with the planning, production and presentation of special events.
Planetarium Show Production: Develop scientific and non-scientific planetarium shows that take advantage of the Science Dome’s unique immersive environment and that are educational and entertaining. Shows are produced using the Digistar 5 planetarium software through a graphical user interface and simple scripting; work closely with local school district curriculum coordinators to develop programs that are appropriate for the preK-12 community and meet science standards; work with Pierce College groups utilizing the Science Dome to understand and meet their unique needs for an immersive environment.
Develop and Support Physics Laboratory Experiments: Communicate and coordinate with physics instructors to ensure their laboratory needs are met; set up, test and take down physics laboratory and demonstration materials; troubleshoot laboratory equipment; create/revise laboratory protocols.
Planetarium Maintenance: Perform general monitoring and troubleshooting of planetarium equipment to maintain quality presentation; resolve minor hardware and software problems; run regular computer backups.
Marketing: Work with Pierce College Marketing and Communications to make flyers, posters, brochures, and other Marketing materials; update/Maintain the science dome website.
Science Dome Budget and Cash Handling: Sell tickets for public Science Dome shows and events; deposit cash into appropriate accounts; purchase equipment for the Science Dome and the Physics Laboratory; keep accurate records of all transactions and reconcile them.
Maintain Physics Laboratory Equipment: Maintain and stock in the physics laboratory equipment and space; order new/replacement laboratory equipment.
Monitor Physics Budget: Monitor physics laboratory budget to ensure accuracy of accounting and proper use of lab fees.
Other Duties as assigned.
 
QUALIFICATIONS:
Required:
Bachelor’s degree in science education, physics, astronomy or related science.
Formal or informal science teaching experience.
Experience with live presentations in front of large audiences.
Sufficient knowledge of astronomy to create educational programming.
Sufficient knowledge of physics to set up and test physics laboratory equipment without supervision.
Skill with computers, software, and integrated technology.

Armstrong Atlantic State University invites applications for a permanent lecturer position in the Department of Chemistry and Physics. The appointment will begin in August 5, 2013, pending budgetary approval.

The Department consists of 15 full time chemistry faculty, 5 full time physics faculty, 5 part-time faculty and 3 staff. The Department is housed in a 129,000 ft2 state of the art science center, opened in June 2002. A large collection of modern equipment is housed in the Science Center, including a new state of the art TOF LC-MS, microwave system, FTIR (5), Raman, GC-FID (2), HPLC, GC-MS (2), CE, UV-Vis (4), TGA, DSC, XRF, AA (2), X-ray diffractometer, a scanning tunneling microscope, fluorometer (4) and two 300 MHz NMR. The Laboratory Supervisor is responsible for performing a variety of professional and technical functions for a multi-science instructional laboratory program. This includes teaching an average of 12 contact hours of laboratory instruction per semester and all functions associated with the assignment. Work involves maintaining the laboratory facilities and purchasing supplies for the department and requires a responsible and professional approach. Work is performed with independence under the general direction and supervision of the Department Head and the Faculty. Work is reviewed through observation of results and through an annual evaluation process, which includes supervisor and faculty evaluations.

Essential Duties
Supervises an average of 12 contact hours of chemistry laboratory instruction per semester as assigned including all related duties: pre-lab lectures, lab supervision, grading and office hours.

Supervises laboratory courses as necessary in the summer semester.

Under the direction of faculty and in collaboration with student lab assistants, prepares laboratory for classes, including setting up and disassembling lab materials and equipment.

Meets with full-time and part-time faculty on a regular basis to discuss laboratory exercises; works along with faculty to improve lab procedures.

Maintains files of all other paperwork related to laboratories.

Keeps a detailed inventory of supplies, equipment, and chemicals.

Keeps the storerooms, prep rooms, instrument rooms, and laboratories organized.

Prepares reports such as inventory lists, short- and long-term prioritized chemical lists, etc.

Assists the department in maintenance of Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) and appropriate documents related to protocols and health/safety procedures.

Follows safety procedures and works with lab assistants in the safe use of equipment.

Keeps laboratories in good running order by making sure that all lab equipment are working properly and the labs are clean and safe.

Coordinates with Plant Operations staff regarding repairs needed in the laboratory areas.

Orders, receives, unpacks, organizes, and stores laboratory supplies and materials to maintain adequate inventory. Assists the department in keeping records of all orders.

Performs related work as required.

Minimum Qualifications and Training
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry or related field is a minimum requirement.

Experience using various chemical instrumentation.

Ability to use e-mail, word processing (Microsoft Word), database and spreadsheet programs (Excel), specific laboratory software, and do internet research.

Excellent (verbal and written) communication skills with the ability to collaborate with faculty and lead lab sessions.

Ability to work effectively with individuals at all levels of the organization.

Ability to learn new procedures and adapt to technological changes in the laboratory.

Ability to organize, prioritize, multi-task, and adapt to changing priorities.

Ability to lift and carry 10 to 25 pounds frequently.

Ability to effectively supervise student workers.

Preferred Qualifications and Training
Master’s degree in chemistry.

Considerable knowledge of the basic principles of life sciences, physical sciences, or both.

Considerable knowledge of the methods, equipment, materials, and techniques used in laboratory work.

Experience in teaching as well as organizing and managing a science laboratory.

Physics Lab Supervisor, Univ of North Dakota

Essential Job Functions

•Adapts labs to the new state of the art laboratory facility in the Stocker AstroScience Center.
•Conducts trial teaching of astronomy laboratories to graduate TAs and adjuncts for training purposes, or to test new exercises to see where deficiencies are and to provide input for lab manual improvements or revisions. Works on converting the manuals to electronic versions. Regularly attends labs taught by TAs to critique their teaching and give them ideas on better teaching methods and material comprehension.
•Maintains astronomy lab Web pages on both Apple and Windows operating systems.
•Assists astronomy faculty in improvement and refurbishment of astronomy labs. Provides support for observatory improvements.
•Assists in organizing and provides technical support for public outreach programs.
•Assists in organizing and provides technical support for public programs, open houses and special observatory tours.
•Provides support to the student astronomy group in the maintenance of its web page.
•Performs related duties as required or as directed. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.

Participates in the planning for implementation of lab exercises and experiments; implements new or modified laboratory policies and procedures as required; prepares special instructions for non-routine and complex assignments; adapts, tests, and maintains equipment, interface computer systems and apparatus in the laboratory; prepares, tests, adjusts, modifies, performs routine maintenance on and calibrates a variety of scientific instruments; trouble-shoots instrumentation problems and makes minor repairs or arranges for service repair. Trains the student assistants in the safe and proper use of laboratory equipment, and hazardous materials; develops, implements and maintains departmental policies and procedures to comply with federal, state, and local hazardous materials, health and safety, hazardous waste regulations (both biological and chemical) in addition to the District’s Environmental Health and Safety policies. Serves assigned SEMS (Standardized Emergency Management and Earthquake Response) role in emergencies. Procures supplies and equipment; researches products, prepares and analyzes bids, purchases required items, receives shipments and verifies contents, assembles, tests and installs new equipment and instruments; maintains, controls and stores a sufficient inventory of supplies and equipment in laboratory facilities including live and time sensitive materials. Monitors and controls expenditures through an on-line computing system to ensure compliance within established budget; prepares cost estimates for budget recommendation; submits justifications for udget items. Recommends environmental, health and safety-related improvements and modifications in laboratory procedures and operations; establishes and enforces laboratory safety procedures; routinely inspects and/or tests safety equipment and supplies; responds to laboratory emergencies including injuries and spills of hazardous materials. Aids in the security of laboratory equipment; may travel to various sites and vendors for supplies and equipment; maintains up-to-date knowledge on matters concerning and impacting college science department, hazardous materials management, health and safety, and hazardous waste management; use and maintenance of equipment and purchasing management. Hires, trains, supervises, evaluates and arranges pay for student employees and independent contractors; provides general support for the facility including observing and submitting work orders for problems related to leaks, hazards, lighting and overall appearance; may supervise or direct the work of classified staff. Performs related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualification
Education/Experience:
Equivalent to the completion of a BS degree in Biological Science or Chemistry with a minimum of 2 years of chemistry coursework from an accredited college. Experience: Equivalent to at least two (2) years full-time experience as a laboratory technician in a college, public health, hospital, clinical or research laboratory performing chemistry tests or biological tests, with experience in safety. License/Certification: A valid Class .C. California Driver.s License and acceptable driving record. Physical Requirements: Ability to lift and move 30 lbs. (Set up microscopes, move equipment and supplies).

Knowledge Of :
Methods, techniques and procedures used in the planning, development and delivery of a college science department laboratory program; subject matter and theoretical principles in chemistry or biology, equipment, materials, supplies, and laboratory methods, practices and techniques used in chemistry or biology; tools, materials and equipment used in the repair, calibration, and maintenance of technical laboratory equipment and instruments; principles, practices, and environmental health and safety regulations necessary to use and dispose of hazardous materials or work with laboratory equipment; functional computer skills; principles of record keeping, budget and revenue control; and, safe and defensive driving techniques.

Ability To:
Organize, coordinate, plan and prioritize laboratory activities; research, adapt, and apply laboratory methods, practices and techniques common to science; perform routine and analytical work needed to prepare reagents, solutions, equipment, and materials for laboratory assignments; correctly and efficiently set up lab equipment and materials used in exercises and experiments; understand the function of, operate, demonstrate, maintain, troubleshoot, repair and calibrate technical instruments; safely handle, store and dispose of hazardous materials; update knowledge in keeping with changing environmental health and safety regulations; generate and maintain accurate computerized records, databases, reports, and files; perform administrative work accurately and efficiently, including budget monitoring and assisting in budget preparation; interpret and apply policies, procedures, rules and regulations; work independently; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; hire, train, direct and evaluate the work of others; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Desirable Qualifications:
• An educational background that includes chemistry courses the applicant has completed and chemistry degrees she or he has earned
• Experience in the development and delivery of laboratory programs, including reagents, supplies, and other materials that would be necessary to sustain a diverse college chemistry laboratory program.
• Experience in operating, maintaining, and repairing analytical instruments in a lab and stockroom.
• Experience in implementing policies and procedures to comply with environmental, health, and safety regulations.
• Experience hiring, training, and supervising employees, especially students, in a laboratory and stockroom setting.
• Ability to create databases to help control department budgets as well as chemical and supply inventories.
