Job Description: Responsible for technical and safety support to the Department of Physical Sciences (physics, physical science, geology, and astronomy) including supervision of the labs,equipment, and part-time technicians; acquires, constructs and maintains instructional equipment and supplies and maintains the laboratory and storage areas. Supports faculty in their course preparation and laboratory functions.
Duties of Position: Identifies and quantifies all supplies and equipment required for each laboratory experiment in all physics and physical science courses and some geology and astronomy courses and ensures that supplies and equipment are properly prepared. Devises new pieces of lab equipment, coordinating with faculty for class requirements.
Maintains and calibrates scientific instruments. Consults with department chairperson on equipment purchases; researches equipment upgrades. Responsible for all ordering of equipment and supplies as directed by the Department chair.
Oversees Department laboratories; assists faculty members during laboratory sessions and oversees quality control. Provides counsel and supervision to adjunct faculty regarding laboratory experiments and procedures.
Maintains the laboratories, stockroom, preparation room, and storage rooms in an orderly and neat condition by supervising the inventory, ordering, and storing of supplies and equipment. Maintains equipment database.
Provides short term laboratory supervision when instructor must leave the laboratory. Safeguards all sensitive materials such as tests, quizzes, scantron sheets, and department mail.
Evaluates hazards and assesses risks in procedures and supplies used in laboratory experiments. Responsible for preparation, storage, and disposal (in accordance with local, state, and federal regulations) of hazardous materials as needed. Maintains a file of Material Safety Data Sheets and other appropriate safety documentation. Monitors health and safety issues in the laboratories. Ensures that all safety equipment functions properly.
Coordinates with other areas of the College including repair for I.T. supported equipment and Physical Plant for building equipment and structural repairs.
Performs related duties as assigned by the Physical Science Department Chair.
Education Requirements: Associate Degree required or documented field experience in one of the following disciplines- Physics, Physical Science, Astronomy or Geology. Bachelor's Degree preferred
Experience Requirements: Hands-on experience in maintenance and repair of electronic and mechanical equipment, preferably in a laboratory environment. Working knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and data collection and analysis software (for example, LoggerPro, etc.) required.
