High School Diploma with a minimum of four years' related experience.  Additional education may be used to meet the experience requirement: an Associate degree may be substituted for two years experience, and a Bachelor's degree may be substituted for four years experience.

The Department of Natural Sciences at Castleton State College seeks applications for a tenure-track position in the college's anticipated new B.S. program in Chemistry beginning August 2014. The successful candidate will develop and teach a two-semester sequence in Physical Chemistry with laboratories, as well as teach an introductory two-semester sequence in Physics for non-physics majors, and upper level electives in his/her specialty for the Chemistry program. Armstrong Atlantic State University invites applications for a permanent lecturer position in the Department of Chemistry and Physics. The appointment will begin in August 5, 2013, pending budgetary approval.

The Department consists of 15 full time chemistry faculty, 5 full time physics faculty, 5 part-time faculty and 3 staff. The Department is housed in a 129,000 ft2 state of the art science center, opened in June 2002. A large collection of modern equipment is housed in the Science Center, including a new state of the art TOF LC-MS, microwave system, FTIR (5), Raman, GC-FID (2), HPLC, GC-MS (2), CE, UV-Vis (4), TGA, DSC, XRF, AA (2), X-ray diffractometer, a scanning tunneling microscope, fluorometer (4) and two 300 MHz NMR. The Laboratory Supervisor is responsible for performing a variety of professional and technical functions for a multi-science instructional laboratory program. This includes teaching an average of 12 contact hours of laboratory instruction per semester and all functions associated with the assignment. Work involves maintaining the laboratory facilities and purchasing supplies for the department and requires a responsible and professional approach. Work is performed with independence under the general direction and supervision of the Department Head and the Faculty. Work is reviewed through observation of results and through an annual evaluation process, which includes supervisor and faculty evaluations.

Essential Duties
Supervises an average of 12 contact hours of chemistry laboratory instruction per semester as assigned including all related duties: pre-lab lectures, lab supervision, grading and office hours.

Supervises laboratory courses as necessary in the summer semester.

Under the direction of faculty and in collaboration with student lab assistants, prepares laboratory for classes, including setting up and disassembling lab materials and equipment.

Meets with full-time and part-time faculty on a regular basis to discuss laboratory exercises; works along with faculty to improve lab procedures.

Maintains files of all other paperwork related to laboratories.

Keeps a detailed inventory of supplies, equipment, and chemicals.

Keeps the storerooms, prep rooms, instrument rooms, and laboratories organized.

Prepares reports such as inventory lists, short- and long-term prioritized chemical lists, etc.

Assists the department in maintenance of Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) and appropriate documents related to protocols and health/safety procedures.

Follows safety procedures and works with lab assistants in the safe use of equipment.

Keeps laboratories in good running order by making sure that all lab equipment are working properly and the labs are clean and safe.

Coordinates with Plant Operations staff regarding repairs needed in the laboratory areas.

Orders, receives, unpacks, organizes, and stores laboratory supplies and materials to maintain adequate inventory. Assists the department in keeping records of all orders.

Performs related work as required.

Minimum Qualifications and Training
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry or related field is a minimum requirement.

Experience using various chemical instrumentation.

Ability to use e-mail, word processing (Microsoft Word), database and spreadsheet programs (Excel), specific laboratory software, and do internet research.

Excellent (verbal and written) communication skills with the ability to collaborate with faculty and lead lab sessions.

Ability to work effectively with individuals at all levels of the organization.

Ability to learn new procedures and adapt to technological changes in the laboratory.

Ability to organize, prioritize, multi-task, and adapt to changing priorities.

Ability to lift and carry 10 to 25 pounds frequently.

Ability to effectively supervise student workers.

Preferred Qualifications and Training
Master’s degree in chemistry.

Considerable knowledge of the basic principles of life sciences, physical sciences, or both.

Considerable knowledge of the methods, equipment, materials, and techniques used in laboratory work.

Experience in teaching as well as organizing and managing a science laboratory.

1-yr FT Instructor Chem/Phys at Mansfield University, PA

The mission of the Chemistry & Physics Department is to offer a quality liberal arts educational experience. The department offers modern facilities and instrumentation. The entire Chemistry & Physics curriculum is designed to give students a sound and broad-based background in their discipline.

Responsibilities
This position is a one-year full-time temporary position for the 2013/2014 academic year. Teaching responsibilities include, but may not be limited to: Physics I & II (lecture, lab, and recitation), Physical Science I & II (lecture and lab). The successful applicant will be expected to conduct themselves in a professional manner, assist in departmental assessment, and maintain a minimum of five hours office hours per week.

Qualifications
Minimum requirements: Master's degree in Physics with a minimum of one year college teaching experience and completion of a successful interview which will include a teaching demonstration of relevant knowledge and skills. Additional qualifications: Ability to effectively communicate subject material; ability to adapt to changing technologies that support teaching and learning; excellent communication skills; and demonstration, through past accomplishments and behaviors, of the ability to support Mansfield University's principles and values of Character, Scholarship, Culture, Service (http://www1.mansfield.edu/mansfield-creed) and the University's strong student-centered vision and mission.
