Educational Assistant (Embedded Librarian) - Manchester Community College

Educational Assistant (Embedded Librarian) - Manchester Community College. Fall 2013 and Spring 2014 semesters, 10 hours per week, Perkins Grant Funded. Anticipated Starting Date: September 2013. Minimum Qualifications: Manchester Community College Library, Manchester Connecticut, is seeking a library science graduate from an ALA-accredited MLS or MLIS program for a position as an embedded librarian. A demonstrated understanding of the mission of the community college as well as a demonstrated ability to respond to and work with multiple constituencies and support a culturally and ethnically diverse population is essential. Applicants who do not meet the minimum qualifications as stated are encouraged to put in writing precisely how their background and experience have prepared them for the responsibilities of this position. Responsibilities: The embedded librarian works collaboratively with faculty to assist students in online (through Blackboard Learn) and hybrid courses with a research emphasis, providing research assistance and other library services in person and virtually. Responsibilities include: working with students to locate scholarly articles in subscription online databases, locating books and other materials, assisting students with proper citation formatting and avoiding plagiarism, formulating search strategies, and evaluating research materials. The embedded librarian will also be responsible for monitoring online research discussions and questions, resolving technical difficulties in accessing online materials, and will inform students of all new library services. The embedded librarian will also be responsible for designing online subject guides (LibGuides) for various disciplines. Other duties include providing on ground research assistance to students, faculty and staff in the MCC Library. Minimum Salary: $29.88 per hour; subject to collective bargaining increases. Library Technician II, Circulation Dept. - UConn Health Center Library, Farmington. At the UCHC library, this class is accountable for acting as a working lead for assigned lower rank library staff members, or performing the most complex supportive services in a library function. Work Schedule: Tues-Thurs 10am-6:30pm, Fri 10:30am-7pm, Sat 8:30am-5pm. Examples of Duties: Responsible for opening and closing the library on Saturday, closing on Friday. Instructs patrons on the use of the library, policies and procedures. Assists with hiring, training, scheduling, directing student workers. Maintains the training material for student workers. Provides information literacy instruction to class groups and individual students. Develops and updates LibGuides; designs web-based tutorials; and assists faculty in the development of student’s information literacy and research skills through course-integrated instruction. Prepares newsletters and assists with special projects as needed. Exercises administrative control over the library during weekend or evening hours, when sole professional on duty. Qualifications: ALA-accredited MLS degree is highly desirable. A student currently enrolled in an ALA-accredited MLS degree program will be considered. Current library reference experience is needed. Head Librarian - Hamden Hall Country Day School. Reports To: Director of Technology and Information Services. Position Summary: Hamden Hall Country Day School, in Hamden, CT, seeks a Head Librarian to oversee the vision and operation of its library. This candidate must demonstrate the ability to provide academic leadership in the areas of information literacy, research, and educational technology. The successful candidate will have the ability to collaborate with faculty and engage students, and to help create a space on campus that supports learning, collaboration and academic exploration. This individual reports to and is evaluated by the Director of Technology and Information Services and works closely with members of the administrative team and academic department heads. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Develop, implement, and assess continuous improvement in library services to faculty and students, including integrating library skills into the curriculum. Provide reference services in small group environments and one-on-one with students, and instruct classes on the use of a variety of resources and research tools. Seek out and regularly inform teachers of new and applicable classroom and library resources. Oversee collection development, including inventory, acquisitions, and collection maintenance. Manage the library’s electronic resources, including subscription databases and websites and the library’s extensive collection of electronic subject guides. Promote library materials and services to the school community through social media, in-person presentations, and written communications. Keep up-to-date on new and effective web tools, iPads in the classroom, and other digital media. Oversee the library budget. Provide students with opportunities to be involved in the library, including advising an active student advisory board, managing student workers, and inviting student feedback and input. Facilitate library programming for middle and upper school students that promotes learning, reading, or creative endeavors, including booktalking. Collaborate with faculty on campus-wide initiatives such as the Swain Library writing contest, summer reading, and the all-school read. Act as the school’s expert on research technologies, copyright, citation methods, and other library skills as needed. Act as a liaison between administration and library staff, and represent the library to faculty and through serving on various school committees. Qualifications and Experience Requirements: This position requires an individual with excellent communication and organizational skills; has a proven ability to promote a positive and collaborative working environment; is reliable, energetic, patient and positive; has a minimum of 3 years’ experience in school libraries. Library Technical Assistant - Hamden Public Library. Position Definition: Performs responsible and varied paraprofessional library duties or administrative clerical work. Assists patrons in using library services and facilities. May select and/or maintain materials of a specific unit or library division. Supervision Received: Receives general supervision from a professional Librarian. Supervision Exercised: Provides general or task supervision to library clerks, pages, and seasonal employees or volunteers. Examples of Essential Job Duties: Plans work according to established procedures. Prioritizes tasks within work assignment. Performs work in special unit, including cataloging, children's, circulation, media, reference, branch services or as assigned. Maintains specific materials, supplies or equipment. Performs circulation desk duties, including charging and discharging library materials, and registering new patrons; answers telephone calls and provides information as necessary. Places books and loan materials on reserve as requested. Maintains circulation desk area in neat and functional conditions. Provides backup assistance in other library areas as required. Receives new collection materials, i.e., books, documents, music cassettes, CD's CD-ROMs, videos, DVDs and talking books, periodicals, etc. Reconciles materials received with purchase orders to assure accuracy of shipment. Enters library materials into database, bibliographic and holdings information. Copy cataloging and editing of MARC records. Physically processes all audio-visual materials for circulation. Refers patrons as necessary to Reference Librarians. Assists children and students in the use of the library's catalogue and reference materials, answers reference questions; locates information or guides children to source materials. Assists children and students in use of computer system to locate books and materials, to access Internet and CD ROM reference sources. May lead story hours, library tours, craft programs, and related events to encourage reading, viewing and listening skills. Refers children and students to Children's Librarian as necessary. Prepared materials in promoting use of library, including posters, newsletters and exhibits. Processes books and materials for mailing in the interlibrary loan program. Maintains records of outgoing and incoming materials. Maintains inventory of library materials and supplies. Interacts with professional staff in maintaining Library collection by recommending or selecting new and replacement books, periodicals and other materials. Examples of Incidental Duties: May lead story hours; library tours, craft programs, and related events to encourage reading, viewing and listening skills when assigned to Children's unit. Relieves other employees as directed by supervisor, including responsibility for a unit in temporary absence of professional librarian. Interviews candidates for Page positions and provides on-the-job training to Pages and Clerks. Minimum Qualifications Required: An Associates Degree in Library Science, or two (2) years' experience in public library work, or an equivalent combination of experience and training. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: A working knowledge of library principles and practices is required. Must be able to apply the principles of library science to resolve practical problems and to deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Must be able to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, and diagrammatic and schedules form. Must be able to add, subtract, multiply and divide all units of measure, and compute ratios, rates and percentages. Must acquire a proficiency in library computer applications and have a general working knowledge of other interfacing departmental applications. Must acquire a proficiency in department specific applications and have a general knowledge of integrated software such as Microsoft Office and its applications, including Word and Excel, and be able to utilize the Town's e-mail system, or be able to acquire these skills within a limited training period as determined by department needs. Must be able to relate to and have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with library staff, children and adult patrons. Must have a general knowledge of library reference methods and procedures. Must be able to perform story telling and other presentations, and provide how to use the library instructions to classes. Must have working knowledge of children's literature and school reading programs. License or Certificate: A Connecticut Motor Vehicle Operator's license is desirable.
