Permanent position
Salary Range - £17,500 - £17,850 per annum

Bristol Zoo Gardens has a vacancy for an Experienced/Senior Keeper working on the mammal section. This position is permanent working 80 hours per fortnight as part of the departmental 14 day rota, which will include weekends and bank holidays.

The successful applicant will be an experienced mammal keeper and will have at least three years experience of working with zoo animals. Having some practical knowledge of the husbandry of small nocturnal mammals will be an advantage.

The successful applicant will be educated to at least GCSE level, including English and a biological science, and hold the Diploma in the Management of Zoo and Aquarium Animals - DMZAA (previously known as ANCMZA) or equivalent. The ability to work within a team and having a general knowledge of the conservation and educational roles of zoos is also desirable.

A vacancy has arisen for a Senior Keeper based at ZSL Whipsnade Zoo. This is an exciting opportunity to join one of our mammal teams looking after rhino, carnivores and large hoof-stock.

The successful candidate will have:

  • A proven track record of working with exotic animals with extensive knowledge of husbandry and enrichment.
  • Ideally worked with rhino, large hoof-stock and carnivores
  • Supervised and developed staff.  
  • Attained the DMZAA in the Management of Zoo Animals or equivalent.

We have exciting plans for developing the Zoo further, continuing our work in conservation of endangered species and providing the very best environment that we can.

We currently have a vacancy for a Senior Keeper on the Apes section. The section includes chimpanzees, gorillas, orang utans and the only bonobo group in the United Kingdom. This is a key role which will involve working on the section, covering all areas of animal husbandry and assisting with staff training.

We are seeking a high performing individual with a proven track record in zoo animal management. You will have a minimum of 4 years’ experience as a zoo based ape keeper and be able to demonstrate a working knowledge of the natural history and management of these taxa. You must be committed to continued professional development and be a good team worker. An animal-related qualification, such as the BIAZA approved ANCMZA or DZMAA, would be advantageous.

We currently have a vacancy for a Senior Keeper on the Elephants section. The elephant section which manages our herd of 4 female Asian elephants recently moved into a protected contact system.  This position is a key role which will involve working on the section, covering all areas of animal husbandry and assisting with staff training
We are seeking a high performing individual with a proven track record in zoo animal management.  You will have a minimum of 4 years’ experience as a zoo based ungulate and/or carnivore keeper and demonstrate a working knowledge of the natural history and management of these taxa. You must be committed to continued professional development and be a good team worker.  An animal-related qualification, such as the BIAZA approved ANCMZA or DZMAA, would be advantageous.

Keeper - The Living Rainforest





The Living Rainforest currently has a vacancy within the Animal Department and will be considering candidates at Junior or Senior Keeper level.

The Living Rainforest is registered charity based near Newbury, Berkshire. Our animal collection is contained within two tropical houses and consists of several hundred small animals of more than 60 species. These include callitrichids, toucans and turacos, snakes, chelonia, stingrays, dendrobatids, and invertebrates.

The Role:
• Work with a diverse range of tropical animals of all taxa.
• Work closely with other departments including horticulture and education.
• Supervision and training of volunteers and work experience students.
• Will involve aspects of public education such as school tour guiding and weekend keeper talks.
• Opportunity for a varied job role including aspects of zoo animal management, enclosure design, research and creation of public talks.
• The job role is likely to be physically demanding and involve some heavy lifting and occasional construction and maintenance work.
• Working hours are approximately 9.00 – 5.30pm five days per week on a rota'd basis. Some weekend and bank holiday work will be required, as well as an occasional evening.
• Salary and Job title will be commensurate with level of experience. Holiday allowance of 20 days per annum plus days off in lieu for bank holidays.
• Would suit an innovative and creative individual looking to gain a broad spectrum of experience.

The successful candidate will take responsibility for the care, welfare and maintenance of all avian livestock within the zoo. This will include hand rearing and aviary maintenance. The candidate should be able to organise and motivate staff team members and liaise with the head keeper and curator. A reservoir of self motivation and strength of character will be required.


Ideal applicant should have at least a minimum of 3 years experience. This is an excellent opportunity for a career position working with a wide range of over 100 avian species, within a small team environment. Senior Elephant Keeper
Based at ZSL Whipsnade Zoo, Bedfordshire



There is a vacancy for an experienced elephant keeper to join the dynamic and innovative team at a senior level at ZSL Whipsnade Zoo. This position will provide the post-holder with the opportunity to develop their skills further and to take on the responsibility of managing Whipsnade’s herd on a daily basis.

A staff of 8 currently cares for a breeding herd of Asian elephants comprising one breeding bull, 5 cows and 3 calves, the youngest being born in 2012. The bull is managed in protected contact but the females and calves are managed in free contact which allows all of the elephants other than the adult male to be walked around the 600 acre zoo site with the keepers ever day. An important part of the programme is to present a demonstration for the visitors during the summer.

Plans are currently underway to build a new open indoor facility in 2014 to accommodate the growing herd and to provide an improved area for the cows and young. This will add to an already comprehensive facility with over 20 acres of grass paddocks, a bull paddock, an all weather sand-yard complex and indoor stables for the cows and young and the breeding bull.

The successful candidate will join an extremely active and committed team that works intensively with the elephants through the day under a well planned programme of husbandry, training, research and veterinary care ranging from daily washing, foot care, taking blood samples and weighing to artificial insemination and ultra-sound scanning.

We are looking for a keeper and manager who must be able to demonstrate the highest standards in the daily care of elephants; is highly motivated and committed to developing their skills further as part of a dynamic team. Applicants should be ambitious and able to assist with the on-going development of the elephant programme at Whipsnade.

Colchester Zoo is currently looking to recruit an experienced keeper to join their Bird Displays Team. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to work with and train an exciting collection of birds and be part of continually developing and improving the daily displays.




The post requires the successful applicant to fly, train and care for a wide range of bird species including Eagles, Owls, Kestrels, Kites, Buzzards, Hawks, Falcons, Hornbills, Macaws, Raven, Marabou stork and Guinea Fowl. They will be expected to take part in the daily educational bird presentations and will have the responsibility of being principle trainer for a number of birds. The successful applicant will need to be a highly motivated, hard working individual who has a good understanding of animal behaviour and previous experience training and working a variety of species. The ability to take part in public presentations and flying bird displays is essential as well as exceptional animal husbandry skills, high standards of animal care and excellent skills in communication. Previous experience working with the above mentioned species is preferable but candidates with previous training experience with other animals will be considered.

Summary of Responsibilities

Adelaide Zoo requires an experienced, dedicated and committed Senior Primate Keeper with extensive Primate husbandry, people management and staff development skills. Experience working within recognized Zoological institutions is essential, along with involvement in relevant captive breeding programs. The applicant will play a vital role in development of this section, providing training to staff, assisting with collection development, and exhibit design. The incumbent must be motivated, and show a desire to encourage this section to strive for institutional and team goals and objectives. A major focus will be on breeding of key conservation species such as the Orang-utan, Golden-lion Tamarins and Gibbons, improved educational/presentation initiatives, behavioural enrichment and training and conditioning.

Experience and Qualifications

The successful applicant will be responsible for the daily operations, including managing numerous aspects of staffing and animal transactions, as well as the husbandry aspects of the collection within the Primate section. At times there is a requirement for the incumbent to supervise in absences of the Team Leader and other Senior keepers within the Primate and Carnivore team. This is a hands-on role, with approximately 80% of time spent on keeping rounds. Sound knowledge of Microsoft Office programs and excellent communication skills are essential. As the Senior is required to assist and advise their team in the progression of their Certificate III in Zoo Keeping, achievement of Certificate III is essential and a willingness to work towards Certificate IV is required.

An opportunity has arisen for a Senior Keeper to join the team at Newquay Zoo.  The post requires a hard working, dedicated, enthusiastic and reliable individual to oversee and contribute to the day to day running of the Tropical House section.

The successful candidate must have an extensive knowledge and wide-ranging experience of exotic animal management, with specialist taxonomic knowledge and experience in the field of Herpetology and Ornithology.  The ideal candidate will possess the aptitude to implement, update and improve the current management techniques for nutrition, enrichment and breeding within these fields.  In addition, they will assist in the future development of the section and be involved with in house staff training. 

The section currently houses over 50 species of reptiles, amphibians and birds consisting of approximately 260 individuals with the addition of 6 mammal species.

A relevant number of years working in Herpetology and Ornithology is required, and preferably within a BIAZA/EAZA recognised institution.  The ideal candidate will have attained the DMZAA or equivalent qualification in animal management or biological sciences.

ZSL is now looking to recruit a Deputy Team Leader for the Bird Section at ZSL London Zoo. In keeping with the responsibilities and require skills of the post it is essential that applicants have a significant and diverse experience of aviculture within a Zoo environment and sound experience in a supervisory position.

You will be fully familiar with accepted husbandry practises and standards and have a deep interest in breeding programmes and conservation. The successful applicant will be responsible for working closely with the Team Leader and deputizing where required. You will be actively involved with the day-to-day running and management of section. Along with good administrative skills and the ability to organise and motivate staff, you will be expected to give a strong commitment to raising the profile of ZSL through your work especially via linkage with relevant organizations such as BIAZA and EAZA. The ability to work as part of a team is essential as are excellent communication skills.

We currently have an exciting opportunity for someone to join our Life Science team as a full time permanent (40 hours per week) Senior Keeper of Reptiles. Reporting to the Team Leader Reptiles, the successful applicant will be responsible for the daily care and management of a variety of reptile and invertebrate species and habitats within the Zoo’s animal collection. Visitor engagement is an essential component of this role and as such requires a 'people person' with a can do attitude.

To be considered for this opportunity you will need to have:

A National Certificate in Captive Wild Animals or equivalent qualification.

Three year’s experience in reptile keeping and husbandry, enclosure design and invertebrate experience would be desirable.

Knowledge of behavioural and environmental enrichment techniques.

The ability to work with limited supervision, solve problems and work well in a team environment.

The flexibility to work on a roster that includes weekends and public holidays.

Good written and verbal communication skills.
