Port Lympne Wild Animal Park near Hythe, Kent is recruiting for an Animal Keeper to work on our Primate Sections in the park.

  The position requires an enthusiastic, self motivated person with experience of working within a mainstream wild animal collection. You must possess good all round animal husbandry skills and be enthusiastic in contributing to the enrichment of the primate species around the park.

This is a physically demanding position so candidates must be physically fit, self motivated and have a genuine interest in conservation and wildlife. A valid driving licence is essential and an animal related qualification or relevant experience would be advantageous.

This is a full time permanent position. Working 40 hours a week, five days out of seven 8.00am to 5.00pm possibly including weekends and bank holidays.

Supervisor Primates, Division of Conservation Development, Al Ain Wildlife Park and Resort, Abu Dhabi, UAE

The Al Ain Wildlife Park (AWPR) first developed as Al Ain Zoo in 1968 by the late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan is being redeveloped by the Abu Dhabi government as an expanded 900 hectare integrated biodiversity institution and resort. The new park will feature extensive exhibits of arid land biodiversity including five World Desert Habitats illustrating the animals, plants, landscapes and cultures of specific desert ecoregions, the Oasis Gardens, five Safaris exhibiting the landscapes and large mammals of five specific deserts. Phase 1 will open in November 2015 and will include the opening of the African World Desert based on the Samburu Region of Northern Kenya. The new Sheikh Zayed Desert Learning Centre is a new world class museum exhibiting the geology, culture and biodiversity of the United Arab Emirates and is a tribute to the environmental heritage of the late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan. The project has a strong conservation foundation with ongoing ex situ and in-country biodiversity projects in Arabia and NE Africa and developing partnerships with zoos, botanic gardens and cultural institutions. The current zoo site is being redeveloped as a new Conservation Breeding Centre dedicated to conservation and research. The project is being developed using the Abu Dhabi government’s sustainability guidelines (ESTIDAMA) and is committed to inspiring guests and visitors through creating an extraordinary set of landscape experiences and biodiversity encounters. AWPR is an integral part of the government of Abu Dhabi’s tourist infrastructure and a key component in the nation’s strategy of developing knowledge based economy. AWPR isa member of WAZA and is working towards full compliance with EAZA standards and policies.

AWPR is seeking a Supervisor Primates to supervise assigned primates’ collection at zoo and ensure that all Primates related standard operating procedures and work plans are implemented effectively. The Primate Supervisor performs all job assignments with a positive attitude that reflects AlAin Zoo’s mission and vision of connecting people to wildlife and conservation. The position is responsible for the daily supervision of the safe care and handling of an assigned animal collection and constantly demonstrates leadership qualities and abilities to engage positive relationship with internal and external customers.

The Supervisor Primates reports to the Coordinator Carnivores, Primates and Nocturnal and will be responsible for

(1) Assures feeding schedules and dietary requirements are met, 

(2) Oversees and coordinates reproduction, hatching, and neonate care programs,

(3) Participates in developing, administering, and monitoring assigned budgets , (

4) Participates in establishing and updating procedures,

(5) Oversees pest control operations,

(6) Provides support and guidance to senior keepers,

(7) Generates work requests and coordinates completion,

(8) Ensures accurate and complete records of animal activities are maintained, (9) Participates in planning for the developing and modifying of exhibits,

(10) Conducts special tours as required,

(11) Maintains a variety of contacts in order to respond to inquiries and requests (12) Effectively coordinate activities, 

(13) Exemplifies the highest standard of work ethics,

(14) Supervises assigned staff, safely providing a high standard of care for designated animals in the AlAin zoo’s collection

(15) Monitors compliance with related regulations and coordinates with regulatory agency representatives

(16) Prepares purchase requisitions for equipment and supplies

(17) Oversees/coordinates animal introductions, moves, restraints, and shipments

(18) Accompanies veterinary staff on medical rounds and assures procedures are followed

(19) Discusses morbidity and mortality with veterinary staff

(20) Regularly inspects and observes assigned collection for overall health and welfare.

The ideal candidate will have experience in managing a diverse animal collection and a commitment to establishing the highest standards of care and welfare. The position will suit an individual with a passion for arid land animals who is comfortable working in a multidisciplinary and multicultural institution and working beyond the traditions of a zoo. The successful candidate should have a Bachelor’s degree in zoology, animal science, or a related field is desirable. Experience working with represented labour is desirable. The candidate should have Minimum of 8 years working experience with exotic animals (mammals, birds and reptiles) and out of these minimum of 2 years working experience with primates as supervisor. Experience in the development, design, construction and operation of new projects/exhibits is important.

We have exciting plans for developing the Zoo further, continuing our work in conservation of endangered species and providing the very best environment that we can.

We currently have a vacancy for a Senior Keeper on the Primates section. The section manages a wide range of medium and small primates including gibbons, guenons, lemurs and callitrichids. This is a key role which involves working on the section, covering all areas of animal husbandry and assisting with staff training.

We are seeking a high performing individual with a proven track record in zoo animal management. You will have a minimum of 4 years’ experience as a zoo based primate keeper and demonstrate a working knowledge of the natural history and management of these taxa. You must be committed to continued professional development and be a good team worker. An animal-related qualification, such as the BIAZA approved ANCMZA or DZMAA, would be advantageous.

The role is full time, including weekend duties on a rota system. Salary is paid monthly and we provide uniform, 31 days holiday, 5% employer’s pension contribution (following qualifying period).

An opportunity has arisen to join our Animal department as a Team Leader of the Primates & Small Mammals section.

The role is responsible for coordinating & supervising daily operations of their team, under the direction of the Collection Manager.

The successful candidate must have an extensive knowledge and wide-ranging experience of exotic animal management, with specialist taxonomic knowledge & experience in the above field.

Excellent communication, organisational and people management skills are essential.

Candidates must hold a minimum Level 3 ANC / DMZAA or equivalent qualification in animal management or biological sciences.

We have temporary vacancy (duration 9 months) for a keeper on the Primate section. The section will manage all our small primate species including callitrichids, cebids, guenons and lemurs. This is a key role which will involve working on the section, covering all areas of animal husbandry.
