Animal Keeper - Primates



Port Lympne Wild Animal Park near Hythe, Kent is recruiting for an Animal Keeper to work on our Primate Sections in the park.

  The position requires an enthusiastic, self motivated person with experience of working within a mainstream wild animal collection. You must possess good all round animal husbandry skills and be enthusiastic in contributing to the enrichment of the primate species around the park.

This is a physically demanding position so candidates must be physically fit, self motivated and have a genuine interest in conservation and wildlife. A valid driving licence is essential and an animal related qualification or relevant experience would be advantageous.

This is a full time permanent position. Working 40 hours a week, five days out of seven 8.00am to 5.00pm possibly including weekends and bank holidays.

Zoo Education and Research Intern

Howletts and Port Lympne are sister parks in Kent known within the UK and Europe for their high standards of animal welfare and captive breeding success. The parks house over 1,000 animals from a range of species (primarily mammals) and there are multiple-groups of many species, providing fantastic research opportunities. As a popular visitor attraction we aim to continually improve our educational programmes. We   are therefore looking for enthusiastic candidates wanting to gain practical research experience in education or zoo welfare for a 6-12 month placement.

The successful applicant will have the opportunity to run an extended research project (this will include producing a summary report), the results of which we will encourage you to get published and/or submit to present at a conference.

A BSc in zoology, animal behaviour, psychology, social science or similar would be advantageous but those from other backgrounds with a passion for conservation, education and captive research may be considered. You will need to be competent in statistical analysis, have experience of data collection, excellent ommunication skills, and be hard-working and enthusiastic.

Interns will work under the supervision of the Education department and in addition to running a research project there will be the opportunity to assist with various educational activities. They will also gain experience in the organisation of courses and workshops.

Working hours can be flexible but you will be required to commit to four days a week, which will include some weekends and bank holidays. Candidates must be available to start in June. Please note this in an unpaid position and we are unable to offer accommodation or expenses with this internship.

Port Lympne Wild Animal Park on the Kent Coast is home to Livingstone Lodge, an award winning and exciting African Safari Experience, Livingstone Cottage a VIP Safari, and Elephant Lodge, our family camping experience.

We have a fantastic opportunity for a Ranger/ Host

You will need a good general knowledge of African wildlife in order to act as a tour guide and hosting skills so providing our guests with a truly unforgettable experience. The post is seasonal, fixed term from now until the end of October 2013. Pay is £7.45 an hour.

Relevant experience of working in and around a Safari Lodge in Africa is essential as is a valid driving licence and a valid work visa for working in the UK. The ideal candidate will be FGASA qualified.

Working hours are split shifts over five days a week, include weekends, Bank Holidays, unsociable hours along with Duty Rangering (which entails staying on site).

Animal Keeper – Hoof Stock Section 

Port Lympne Wild Animal Park near Hythe, Kent has an opportunity for an 
experienced, hardworking and dedicated keeper to work with a small team of 
enthusiastic and likeminded keepers on our hoof stock section to cover a period of 
maternity leave. Our collection of hoof stock animals includes; buffalo, tapir, zebra, 
various antelope and deer, bison, and wildebeest.

This is a very physical role and the successful applicant will be expected to undertake 
all duties on the section including food preparation, cleaning, enclosure building and 
maintenance. Conservation education plays a big role in the park so there will be 
plenty of opportunities for doing talks and displays to the public.

We are looking for an individual who is hardworking, passionate and committed with 
knowledge of current conservation issues and experience in presenting talks to the 
public. You will also need a flexible approach to working hours and have a hands on 
approach to the restraint and handling of animals. 

You must have significant experience in animal keeping gained in a zoo park or 
equivalent environment with experience working with hoofstock animals. A full valid 
driving licence is essential and experience in driving tractors and Land Rovers off 
road is also desirable. Although not essential for the role, a firearms licence would be 
advantageous. Ideally you will have obtained an animal management qualification or 
equivalent but if not you must be willing to work towards obtaining a relevant 
qualification. 

The role is 40 hours a week, 5 days out of seven, 8.00am to 5.00pm. Expected start 
date is July and you will need to be available to work in this post for up to 12 months
or until the post holder returns.

DEPUTY HEAD OF SECTION

(African Elephants)

 

 Port Lympne Wild Animal Park has a vacancy for an experienced Elephant Keeper capable of taking on the responsibilities and duties that the role of Deputy Head of Section demands. 

 
Applicants must have gained experience in all aspects of elephant husbandry and have gained significant experience working with captive elephants.
 
You will need excellent written and oral communications skills, team leadership skills and the ability to motivate and develop the performance of section staff. Strong organisational and time management skills coupled with the ability to effectively manage the working time of keepers on the section is essential as is a valid manual driving licence.   
 
You will be expected to make appropriate short-term husbandry decisions regarding the feeding, movement and treatment of elephants; assist the Section Manager to maintain the sections records and paperwork; carry out risk assessments; and run the section in the absence of the Section Manager.
 
Ideally you will posses or be willing to obtain a recognised zoo qualification, be comfortable giving talks to the public and have the confidence to represent the company in the media.
