Animal Keeper: Great Apes

Twycross Zoo – East Midland Zoological Society (TZEMS), the World Primate Centre, holds a large variety of primates – every type of great ape (gorilla, chimpanzee, bonobo, orang-utan) plus a range of other primates including gibbons, lemurs, callitrichids, cebids and guenons to name a few!  We have impressive breeding records for many of these species and recent changes to husbandry practices has enabled more natural groupings and enclosure modifications. We have more to do!

We are going through an exciting period of change as this zoo develops and so are looking for dynamic, knowledgeable individuals to help lead the teams forward.

We have a vacancy for a keeper on the Great Apes section. The section manages all great ape taxa including chimpanzees, bonobos, orang utans and gorillas.  This is a key role which will involve working on the section, covering all areas of animal husbandry including feeding, cleaning, training and record keeping; as well as interacting with the zoo visitors.

We are seeking an enthusiastic, high performing individual with an interest in zoo animal management. You must be a good team worker with a positive outlook and have excellent communication skills.  A minimum of 2 years zoo keeping experience with great apes, and an animal-related qualification, such as the BIAZA approved ANCMZA or DZMAA, would be advantageous. 

The role is full time, including weekend duties on a rota system. Salary is paid monthly.  We provide uniform and 31 days holiday per annum.

We are seeking an enthusiastic, high performing individual with a proven track record in zoo animal management. You will have a minimum of 4 years’ experience as a keeper and demonstrate a substantial working knowledge of the natural history and management of key species.  You must be a good team worker with a positive outlook and excellent communication skills and be committed to continued professional development of yourself and other staff.  Supervisory experience as well as an animal-related qualification, such as the BIAZA approved ANCMZA or DZMAA, would be advantageous.

Twycross Zoo – East Midland Zoological Society (TZEMS), is the World Primate Centre. The zoo has a comprehensive collection of primates, including all 4 types of great ape, together with other mammals, birds and reptiles.  The zoo has exciting plans to further its work in the conservation of endangered species and is striving to achieve the best in animal welfare, research, conservation and education.

We are going through a period of transformation as the zoo develops and, as a result, are looking for dynamic, knowledgeable individuals to help lead the teams forward.  Following internal promotion, a position has become available for an Animal Manager to lead and advance the Animal Department as part of the development of the Life Sciences Directorate. 

The successful candidate will have the vision to be part of the development of a world class animal department in conjunction with the senior Life Sciences team.  

Applicants must have a proven track record at a recognized zoological collection, preferably with experience of EEP, TAG or other relevant areas of zoological conservation work and best practice.  They must possess good all round animal husbandry skills and be able to lead, develop and motivate a team.  A scientific background would also be desirable.  A proactive and positive approach together with strong communication skills and an overall understanding of the role of the modern zoo is essential.

The role is full time, 5 days out of 7, including weekend duties shared amongst the senior animal team on a rota system and extra hours as required.  Salary is paid monthly with 31 days holiday per annum and employers’ pension contribution (after qualifying period).

We currently have a vacancy for an animal keeper on the Primates section to cover maternity leave for approximately 6 to 9 months.  This section manages all our small primate species including callitrichids, cebids, guenons and lemurs.  This is a key role which involves working on the section, covering all areas of animal husbandry including feeding, cleaning, training and record keeping, as well as interacting with the Zoo visitors.

We are seeking an enthusiastic, high performing individual with an interest in zoo animal management. You must be a good team worker with a positive outlook and have excellent communication skills.  A minimum of 2 years’ zoo keeping experience with primates, and an animal-related qualification, such as the BIAZA approved ANCMZA or DZMAA, would be advantageous. 

The role is full time, including weekend duties on a rota system. Salary is paid monthly and we provide uniform, 31 days holiday per annum, 5% employer’s pension contribution (after qualifying period).

We have more to do and as the Zoo develops we are looking for dynamic, knowledgeable individuals to help lead the teams forward.

We currently have a vacancy for an Executive Assistant reporting to the Head of Life Sciences.   This is a temporary position, to cover maternity leave and is expected to last for 12 months.

The successful applicant will be a senior level personal assistant, supporting the Head of Life Sciences, with additional responsibility for defined initiatives and projects.

The Executive Assistant is the main point of contact, for external and internal customers, and is required to manage and co-ordinate the diaries, including arranging appointments and any travel needs.  On a day to day basis, they will be required to carry out typing, preparation of paperwork, filing, note-taking, administration and any other secretarial duties as required, including the organisation and secure storage of contracts, financial and legal documentation.

In addition to having responsibility for particular projects, as defined by the Head of Life Sciences, they will also manage and prepare for Council Meetings and other Board activities,  attend and take minutes at Board Meetings, amalgamate information for the Annual Report and oversee its proof-reading, printing and distribution, as agreed by the Executive Team.

The role requires excellent communication and organisation skills and a high level of confidentiality at all times.

This is a full time position, 8:30 to 5:00pm, Monday to Friday.

Twycross Zoo – East Midland Zoological Society (TZEMS), the World Primate Centre, has one of the most comprehensive collections of primates in the western world alongside a wide range of other animal species. The Zoo has exciting plans for further development to continue its work in the conservation of endangered species and the provision of high standards of animal husbandry.

As a zoological society, popular visitor attraction and charity, the Zoo is striving to increase its contribution to animal welfare, research, conservation and education, whilst providing outstanding value for money for all who visit.  We are keen to recruit a dynamic and knowledgeable Head of Life Science to help lead the organisation forward.
The Head of Life Sciences is a key member of the Executive Team, working closely with and supporting managers.  We are firm believers that our employees are our greatest asset and we are looking for a Head of Life Science who can provide strong leadership on a daily basis.  
The successful candidate will have responsibility for creating a department that will allow us to continue to grow and fulfill its mission.
This crucial role will also be responsible for:
·       Leading on all aspects of the life science directorate strategy and operational aspects
·       Overall management of staff of the animal, veterinary, education and future research departments
·       Act for the zoo as a liaison with Defra, EAZA, BIAZA and other legal entities concerned with zoo legislation
·       Be conversant with relevant codes of practice and legislation, ensure compliance with the zoo licensing act and other relevant legislation
·       Keep up to date with the role of the modern zoo and aim to develop good practice within the zoo community
The successful candidate must have at least 10 years’ experience as a senior manager in a zoo or close related field and hold a higher degree and / or further professional postgraduate qualification in a relevant veterinary or zoological field.    They will also possess a good working knowledge of the roles, goals and objectives of the modern zoo.     Having previously held a position with managerial responsibilities and having successfully led teams that have contributed to improvement, they must be able to demonstrate innovative thinking, as well as extensive knowledge of the zoo animal field.   They will, in addition, possess the interpersonal skills and the vision to be both an effective leader and an influential team member of the Zoo’s senior management.
The role is full time, including weekend duties on a rota system. Salary is paid monthly, with an annual holiday entitlement and a 5% employer’s pension contribution (after qualifying period).
