Twycross Zoo – East Midland Zoological Society (TZEMS), is the World Primate Centre. The zoo has a comprehensive collection of primates, including all 4 types of great ape, together with other mammals, birds and reptiles.  The zoo has exciting plans to further its work in the conservation of endangered species and is striving to achieve the best in animal welfare, research, conservation and education.

We are going through a period of transformation as the zoo develops and, as a result, are looking for dynamic, knowledgeable individuals to help lead the teams forward.  Following internal promotion, a position has become available for an Animal Manager to lead and advance the Animal Department as part of the development of the Life Sciences Directorate. 

The successful candidate will have the vision to be part of the development of a world class animal department in conjunction with the senior Life Sciences team.  

Applicants must have a proven track record at a recognized zoological collection, preferably with experience of EEP, TAG or other relevant areas of zoological conservation work and best practice.  They must possess good all round animal husbandry skills and be able to lead, develop and motivate a team.  A scientific background would also be desirable.  A proactive and positive approach together with strong communication skills and an overall understanding of the role of the modern zoo is essential.

The role is full time, 5 days out of 7, including weekend duties shared amongst the senior animal team on a rota system and extra hours as required.  Salary is paid monthly with 31 days holiday per annum and employers’ pension contribution (after qualifying period).

Salary range £20,500 - £22,500 per annum

Bristol Zoo is proud and excited to take the first step on a journey towards achieving the ultimate goal of the National Wildlife Conservation Park by opening Wild Place in the summer of 2013.
Building on and celebrating the natural environment, Wild Place will be an invigorating setting that brings nature and the woodland to life. This family-led attraction will focus on fun, play and learning with children and adults being inspired to protect threatened habitats on their doorsteps as well as around the globe.
This is a key managerial role working as part of an operational team on site covering all day to day operational duties.  Your role will be crucial in ensuring that our conservation and wildlife message is a top priority by delivering excellent animal care standards on site.

We are looking to recruit an Animal Department Manager within the next few months in time for the major expansion of the zoo.

Ideally you should have worked with a broad variety of animal species and have at least 8 years experience in a position of practical and organisational responsibility within a Zoo or Safari Park.

We are not looking for an academic who has just left university so please do not apply unless you have the work experience as we require a practical person who understands the day to day operations of a busy zoo and a very diverse collection of animals. Qualifications are not important to us but a proven track record of good husbandry is.

You will be responsible for 15 full animal Carers and approximately 10 part time or apprentices and the welfare of all the animals on site.

To be successful in this role you will be able to work to strict quality and regulatory deadlines.

You will take ownership of this role and will be passionate and enthusiastic to work for a rapidly expanding Company with over 300,000 visitors per annum and expansion to 3 times its existing size.
