Associate Veterinarian

 
Associate Veterinarian, Division of Conservation and Education, Al Ain Wildlife Park and Resort (AWPR), Abu Dhabi, UAE
The Al Ain Wildlife Park (AWPR) first developed as Al Ain Zoo in 1968 by the late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan is being redeveloped by the Abu Dhabi government as an expanded 900 hectare integrated biodiversity institution and resort. The new park will feature extensive exhibits of arid land biodiversity including five World Desert Habitats illustrating the animals, plants, landscapes and cultures of specific desert ecoregions, the Oasis Gardens, five Safaris exhibiting the landscapes and large mammals of five specific deserts. Phase 1 will open in November 2015 and will include the opening of the African World Desert based on the Samburu Region of Northern Kenya. The new Sheikh Zayed Desert Learning Centre is a new world class museum exhibiting the geology, culture and biodiversity of the United Arab Emirates and is a tribute to the environmental heritage of the late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan. The project has a strong conservation foundation with ongoing ex situ and in-country biodiversity projects in Arabia and NE Africa and developing partnerships with zoos, botanic gardens and cultural institutions. The current zoo site is being redeveloped as a new Conservation Breeding Centre dedicated to conservation and research. The project is being developed using the Abu Dhabi government’s sustainability guidelines (ESTIDAMA) and is committed to inspiring guests and visitors through creating an extraordinary set of landscape experiences and biodiversity encounters. AWPR is an integral part of the government of Abu Dhabi’s tourist infrastructure and a key component in the nation’s strategy of developing knowledge based economy. AWPR is a member of WAZA and is working towards full compliance with EAZA standards and policies.
We currently have an exciting new position for a qualified Wild Life Veterinarian to join our Veterinary Science team as an Associate Veterinarian on a permanent full time basis. Reporting to the Senior Veterinarian the successful candidate will work closely with Veterinary team ensuring excellent care for all animals at the Zoo.
The successful candidate will be responsible for proactively managing the health of the Zoo's animals while working closely with the Animal Collection team. In addition to this the successful candidate will be responsible for veterinary record keeping, assisting with teaching and training, providing veterinary input into AWPR conservation programmes and contributing to our conservation medicine projects and research.
The successful candidate will work with the Senior Veterinarian to ensure that AWPR grows as an active contributor to national, regional and international breeding and reintroduction projects and an active participant in EAZA and WAZA activities
The Associate veterinarian will reports to the Senior Veterinarian and will be responsible for
(1) Provides medical and surgical care at a location or specific collection,
(2) Participates in establishing policies, procedures, and standards
(3) Oversees restraining or immobilization procedures
(4) Participate in developing veterinary programs,
(5) Develop diagnoses and treatment programs,
(6) Performs emergency and scheduled surgical procedures,
(7) Reviews and analyses pathology records,
(8) Develops and administers preventive medicine and husbandry programs such as vaccinations, worming, nutrition, foot care, dental care, and quarantine examinations,
(9) Coordinates off-site veterinary services and support for conservation programs,
(10) Develops instructional programs and teaches animal care staff, visiting veterinarians, and students,
(11) Conducts and participates in animal inspection rounds with staff and other departments to discuss and plan treatment programs
The ideal candidate will have experience in managing a diverse animal collection and a commitment to establishing the highest standards of care and welfare. The position will suit an individual with a passion for arid land animals who is comfortable working in a multidisciplinary and multicultural institution and working beyond the traditions of a zoo. The successful candidate should be qualified Wild Life Veterinarian preferably with M.Sc in Veterinary Medicine or (DVM) Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from an accredited university. The candidate should have at least 4 -6 years of experience in a world class zoological institute/wild animal collection.

AWPR is seeking a Coordinator Outreach and Animal Trainer to enhance integrity of different functions within assigned area. It is also required to enhance proper planning and budgeting process for the department. Coordinators role is also aiming to standardize work procedures and policies among different functions within assigned area. The Coordinator performs all job assignments with a positive attitude that reflects Al Ain Zoo’s mission and vision of connecting people to wildlife, conservation. The Coordinator is responsible for and oversees all aspects of the safe care and handling of an assigned animal collection; contributes to collection strategic planning. This position will participate in preparation of the departmental annual work plans and budget as well as policies relevant to the assigned area of work.
The CoordinatorOutreach and Animal Trainerreports to the Manager of Animal Collections and will be responsible for
(1) Evaluates, adjusts and coordinates husbandry standards and techniques applied to an assigned animal collection according to a zoo master plan, 
(2) Plans, oversees, directs implementation and coordination of animal husbandry programs, reproduction, neonatal care, introductions, moves, restraints and shipments; regularly inspects and observes assigned collection for overall health and welfare,
(3) Ensures dietary requirements of the assigned collection are met and fulfilled,
(4) Discusses morbidity and mortality with veterinary and pathology staff,
(5) Manages and evaluates the performance of animal supervisory staff as assigned.
(6) Oversees and participates in the preparation and maintenance of a variety of collection records required for collection management,
(7) Assures the meeting of legal requirements in collection management as well as domestic and international shipping of animals; develops new techniques as required to meet animal shipment regulations; may assist in the acquisition of permits.,
(8) Maintains a variety of contacts in order to respond to inquiries and requests and to effectively coordinate collection maintenance and management activities.
(9) Assures effective organizational communication and team building, provides specialized training relative to collection husbandry
(10) Resolves problems and complaints referred by teams and staff including conflicts in priority and across the organization
(11) Executes, and under direction may implement, animal sales, loans, trades and purchases according to zoo collection master plan
(12) Assures use of appropriate animal handling, shipment, management and training methodologies for the collection, assures appropriate training of staff in techniques of animal management and transfer
(13) Participates in exhibit and facility planning, research and design
(14) Recommends exhibit design relative to management and husbandry requirements of species to be incorporated
(15) Recommends signage and graphics
(16) Maintains a variety of classification appropriate contacts in order to respond to inquiries and requests and to effectively coordinate collection husbandry and maintenance activities.
The ideal candidate will have experience in managing a diverse animal collection and a commitment to establishing the highest standards of care and welfare. The position will suit an individual with a passion for arid land animals who is comfortable working in a multidisciplinary and multicultural institution and working beyond the traditions of a zoo. The successful candidate should have a Bachelor’s Degree in Zoology, Animal Science, Wildlife Management or other related field. The candidate should have minimum of 10 years working experience with exotic animals (mammals, birds and reptiles) and out of these minimum of 4 years working experience in outreach and animal training. Experience in the development, design, construction and operation of new projects/exhibits is important.

(1)Responsible for immunization of animals, disease screening, parasite surveillance and control, and vermin control,
(2)Reviews and analyses pathology records
(3)Liaise with local, regional and international institutions in issues related to different veterinary research activities
(4) Responsible for the co-ordination and supervision of the staff involved in approved veterinary research programmes,
(6)Responsible for implementing the prevention medicine program that include all practices that strengthen genetic and immunologic resistance to disease, (7) Responsible to provide effective quarantine program for all incoming and outgoing animals,
(8)Design/review of vaccination program based on the animal collection, diseases endemic to the area and potential for exposure,
(9)Design infectious disease screening program based on the prevalence of a disease in the vicinity of the Park,
(10) Periodic reviews of animal diet,
(11)As a part of preventive medicine program a periodic review of vermin control (both vertebrate and invertebrate) because of the potential for pests to serve as vectors or reservoirs of disease, (
12) Periodically review of mortality and morbidity as part of a preventive medicine program,
(13) Conducts clinical research, documents findings, and publishes in peer-reviewed scientific journals and other publications
The ideal candidate will have experience in managing a diverse animal collection and a commitment to establishing the highest standards of care and welfare. The position will suit an individual with a passion for arid land animals who is comfortable working in a multidisciplinary and multicultural institution and working beyond the traditions of a zoo. AWPR is seeking an Animal Nutrition Supervisor is required toto ensure that the zoos animal collection receives the appropriate quantity and quality of feed based on species specific requirements. The Animal Nutrition Supervisor is responsible for ensuring implementation of animal nutrition protocols and daily programs. She/he is also responsible for developing and implementing standard operating procedures for function and review, and for updating SOPs when required. Animal Nutrition Supervisor is also required to develop animal enrichment plans and coordinate with other department supervisors to enhance animal enrichment standards in the back of house and core zoo exhibits. A key responsibility for this position is ensuring proper documentation of the daily activities, diet change and enrichment activities and report to the animal nutrition coordinator. On the other hand, he/she is also required to train and develop senior keepers and keepers within his/her function. . The Animal Nutrition Supervisor performs all job assignments with a positive attitude that reflects AlAin Zoo’s mission and vision of connecting people to wildlife and conservation. The position is responsible for the daily supervision of the safe care and handling of an assigned animal collection and constantly demonstrates leadership qualities and abilities to engage positive relationship with internal and external customers.
The Animal Nutrition Supervisor reports to the Section Head, Nutrition and Enrichment and will be responsible for for
(1)Prepare yearly work plans, objectives and assign responsibilities within the assigned nutrition area, 
(2) Promote and enforce company guidelines, policies and standards,
(3) Process diet changes as and when necessary, seeking all approvals and taking into consideration logistics of implementation, growth, reproduction, health and/or performance of animal(s) in question ,
(4) Maintaining, updating and communicating animal diet records for all animals in collection,
(5) Research the effectiveness of dietary items and regimes,
(6) Ensure the safe and proper handling/processing of food for animals, health and safety procedures and any other relevant topics,
(7) Liaise with producers, suppliers and other relevant partners to insure consistency of delivery, and required quality,
(8) Process animal food purchase requests using the ERP system and liaise with other relevant departments when required to insure the security of animal food acquisition,
(9) Directly supervise keeper and senior keeper areas and all aspects of their work and including the evaluation of their work performance,
(10) Supervise the day to day activities of the food center, forage and pellet warehouses. This includes and not limited to supervising staff, overseeing and inspecting food deliveries for quality and suitability, overseeing food preparation and distribution activities,
(11) Conduct research on new animal foods, suppliers and feeding techniques, (12) Observe and collect data e.g. on animal intake, food choices and generate reports,
(13) E Ensure proper documentation of all function related records and data, (14) Prepare daily and/or monthly reports as and when required. Participate in the Animal Collection Department regular meetings and planning sessions.
The ideal candidate will have experience in managing a diverse animal collection and a commitment to establishing the highest standards of care and welfare. The position will suit an individual with a passion for arid land animals who is comfortable working in a multidisciplinary and multicultural institution and working beyond the traditions of a zoo. The successful candidate should have a Bachelor’s degree in zoology, animal science, or a related field is desirable. Experience working with represented labor is desirable. AWPR is seeking a Supervisor Hoof stock is required to supervise assigned hoof stocks collection at zoo and ensure that all hoof stocks related standard operating procedures and work plans are implemented effectively. The Hoof stock Supervisor performs all job assignments with a positive attitude that reflects AlAin Zoo’s mission and vision of connecting people to wildlife and conservation. The position is responsible for the daily supervision of the safe care and handling of an assigned animal collection and constantly demonstrates leadership qualities and abilities to engage positive relationship with internal and external customers.
The Supervisor Hoof stock reports to the Coordinator Hoof Stock and will be responsible for for
(1) Assures feeding schedules and dietary requirements are met, 
(2) Oversees and coordinates reproduction, hatching, and neonate care programs,
(3) Participates in developing, administering, and monitoring assigned budgets ,
(4) Participates in establishing and updating procedures,
(5) Oversees pest control operations,
(6) Provides support and guidance to senior keepers,
(7) Generates work requests and coordinates completion,
(8) Ensures accurate and complete records of animal activities are maintained, (9) Participates in planning for the developing and modifying of exhibits,
(10) Conducts special tours as required,
(11) Maintains a variety of contacts in order to respond to inquiries and requests

Phase 1 will open in November 2015 and will include the opening of the African World Desert based on the Samburu Region of Northern Kenya. The new Sheikh Zayed Desert Learning Centre is a new world class museum exhibiting the geology, culture and biodiversity of the United Arab Emirates and is a tribute to the environmental heritage of the late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan. The project has a strong conservation foundation with ongoing ex situ and in-country biodiversity projects in Arabia and NE Africa and developing partnerships with zoos, botanic gardens and cultural institutions. The current zoo site is being redeveloped as a new Conservation Breeding Centre dedicated to conservation and research. The project is being developed using the Abu Dhabi government’s sustainability guidelines (ESTIDAMA) and is committed to inspiring guests and visitors through creating an extraordinary set of landscape experiences and biodiversity encounters. AWPR is an integral part of the government of Abu Dhabi’s tourist infrastructure and a key component in the nation’s strategy of developing knowledge based economy. AWPR isa member of WAZA and is working towards full compliance with EAZA standards and policies.
AWPR is seeking a Supervisor Live Food is required to ensure the safe production of live food for the zoos animal collection the appropriate quantity and quality based on species specific requirements. Also, is responsible for ensuring implementation of live food breeding, biosecurity, and animal welfare protocols and programs. She/he is also responsible for developing and implementing standard operating procedures for function and review, and for updating SOPs when required. A key responsibility for this position is ensuring proper documentation of the daily activities, levels of production and breeding programs and report to the animal nutrition coordinator. On the other hand, he/she is also required to train and develop senior keepers and keepers within his/her function. The Animal Nutrition Supervisor performs all job assignments with a positive attitude that reflects AlAin Zoo’s mission and vision of connecting people to wildlife and conservation. The position is responsible for the daily supervision of the safe care and handling of an assigned animal collection and constantly demonstrates leadership qualities and abilities to engage positive relationship with internal and external customers.
The Supervisor Live Food reports to the Section Head, Nutrition and Enrichment and will be responsible for for
(1) Prepare yearly work plans, objectives and assign responsibilities within the assigned live food area, 
(2) Promote and enforce company guidelines, policies and standards,
(3) Maintain and oversee expansion of live food colonies including management of animal husbandry, genotyping and phenotyping ,
(4) Process diet changes as and when necessary, seeking all approvals and taking into consideration logistics of implementation.,
(5) Ensure the safe and proper handling/processing of live food, biosecurity, health and safety procedures and any other relevant topics,
(6) Liaise with Animal Nutrition Supervisor and other relevant partners to process live food material purchase requests to insure acquisition of requirements,
(7) Schedule, participate and assign workload for staff in assigned areas,
(8) Directly supervise keeper and senior keeper areas and all aspects of their work and including the evaluation of their work performance,
(9) Supervise the day to day activities of the live food unit. This includes and not limited to supervising staff, overseeing and inspecting live animals, breeding systems, handling and processing of live food and distribution activities. ,
(10) Conduct research on live food production, production systems, sustainability and other relevant topics,
(11) Observe and collect data e.g. on animal intake, selection/preference and generate reports,
(12) Ensure proper documentation of all function related records and data,
(13) Prepare daily and/or monthly reports as and when required. Participate in the Animal Collection Department regular meetings and planning sessions, (14) May participate in scientific meetings, conferences and workshops pertaining to his/her area.
The ideal candidate will have experience in managing a diverse animal collection and a commitment to establishing the highest standards of care and welfare. The position will suit an individual with a passion for arid land animals who is comfortable working in a multidisciplinary and multicultural institution and working beyond the traditions of a zoo. The successful candidate should have a Bachelor’s degree in zoology, animal science, or a related field is desirable. Experience working with represented labor is desirable. The candidate should have Minimum of 4 - 6 years working experience with relative field and out of these minimum of 2 years working experience with Live Food as supervisor.

AWPR is seeking a Supervisor Primates to supervise assigned primates’ collection at zoo and ensure that all Primates related standard operating procedures and work plans are implemented effectively. The Primate Supervisor performs all job assignments with a positive attitude that reflects AlAin Zoo’s mission and vision of connecting people to wildlife and conservation. The position is responsible for the daily supervision of the safe care and handling of an assigned animal collection and constantly demonstrates leadership qualities and abilities to engage positive relationship with internal and external customers.
The Supervisor Primates reports to the Coordinator Carnivores, Primates and Nocturnal and will be responsible for
(1) Assures feeding schedules and dietary requirements are met, 
(2) Oversees and coordinates reproduction, hatching, and neonate care programs,
(3) Participates in developing, administering, and monitoring assigned budgets , (
4) Participates in establishing and updating procedures,
(5) Oversees pest control operations,
(6) Provides support and guidance to senior keepers,
(7) Generates work requests and coordinates completion,
(8) Ensures accurate and complete records of animal activities are maintained, (9) Participates in planning for the developing and modifying of exhibits,
(10) Conducts special tours as required,
(11) Maintains a variety of contacts in order to respond to inquiries and requests (12) Effectively coordinate activities, 
(13) Exemplifies the highest standard of work ethics,
(14) Supervises assigned staff, safely providing a high standard of care for designated animals in the AlAin zoo’s collection
(15) Monitors compliance with related regulations and coordinates with regulatory agency representatives
(16) Prepares purchase requisitions for equipment and supplies
(17) Oversees/coordinates animal introductions, moves, restraints, and shipments
(18) Accompanies veterinary staff on medical rounds and assures procedures are followed
(19) Discusses morbidity and mortality with veterinary staff
(20) Regularly inspects and observes assigned collection for overall health and welfare.
