Marwell Wildlife is a registered charity dedicated to the conservation of biodiversity and other natural resources. Our 140 acre zoological park in the heart of Hampshire is home to over 180 exotic and charismatic species in beautiful landscaped surroundings.

We are recruiting for a Qualified Animal Keeper to join the animal management team at Marwell. Our Qualified Keepers must have a strong generalist background with zoological experience as they may be required to work on a variety of sections. On this occasion however, an interest and previous experience with ungulates would also be an advantage.

Roles and responsibilities will include ensuring high standards of animal husbandry at all times and keeping daily checks and records.

Applicants will need to have previous experience in animal husbandry, ideally working in a zoological collection, hold 5 GCSE’s or equivalent and a valid driving licencefor the UK. The DMZAA or equivalent qualification is essential at Qualified Keeper level.

The successful candidate will be able to work well as part of a team, have the ability to use their initiative, display interest and commitment to animal welfare and conservation, and must possess strong verbal communication skills as talking to members of the public is an essential part of the role.

The Al Ain Wildlife Park (AWPR) first developed as Al Ain Zoo in 1968 by the late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan is being redeveloped by the Abu Dhabi government as an expanded 900 hectare integrated biodiversity institution and resort. The new park will feature extensive exhibits of arid land biodiversity including five World Desert Habitats illustrating the animals, plants, landscapes and cultures of specific desert ecoregions, the Oasis Gardens, five Safaris exhibiting the landscapes and large mammals of five specific deserts. Phase 1 will open in November 2015 and will include the opening of the African World Desert based on the Samburu Region of Northern Kenya. The new Sheikh Zayed Desert Learning Centre is a new world class museum exhibiting the geology, culture and biodiversity of the United Arab Emirates and is a tribute to the environmental heritage of the late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan. The project has a strong conservation foundation with ongoing ex situ and in-country biodiversity projects in Arabia and NE Africa and developing partnerships with zoos, botanic gardens and cultural institutions. The current zoo site is being redeveloped as a new Conservation Breeding Centre dedicated to conservation and research. The project is being developed using the Abu Dhabi government’s sustainability guidelines (ESTIDAMA) and is committed to inspiring guests and visitors through creating an extraordinary set of landscape experiences and biodiversity encounters. AWPR is an integral part of the government of Abu Dhabi’s tourist infrastructure and a key component in the nation’s strategy of developing knowledge based economy. AWPR isa member of WAZA and is working towards full compliance with EAZA standards and policies.
AWPR is seeking a Supervisor Hoof stock is required to supervise assigned hoof stocks collection at zoo and ensure that all hoof stocks related standard operating procedures and work plans are implemented effectively. The Hoof stock Supervisor performs all job assignments with a positive attitude that reflects AlAin Zoo’s mission and vision of connecting people to wildlife and conservation. The position is responsible for the daily supervision of the safe care and handling of an assigned animal collection and constantly demonstrates leadership qualities and abilities to engage positive relationship with internal and external customers.
The Supervisor Hoof stock reports to the Coordinator Hoof Stock and will be responsible for for
(1) Assures feeding schedules and dietary requirements are met, 
(2) Oversees and coordinates reproduction, hatching, and neonate care programs,
(3) Participates in developing, administering, and monitoring assigned budgets ,
(4) Participates in establishing and updating procedures,
(5) Oversees pest control operations,
(6) Provides support and guidance to senior keepers,
(7) Generates work requests and coordinates completion,
(8) Ensures accurate and complete records of animal activities are maintained, (9) Participates in planning for the developing and modifying of exhibits,
(10) Conducts special tours as required,
(11) Maintains a variety of contacts in order to respond to inquiries and requests
(12) Effectively coordinate activities, 
(13) Exemplifies the highest standard of work ethics,
(14) Supervises assigned staff, safely providing a high standard of care for designated animals in the AlAin zoo’s collection
(15) Monitors compliance with related regulations and coordinates with regulatory agency representatives
(16) Prepares purchase requisitions for equipment and supplies
(17) Oversees/coordinates animal introductions, moves, restraints, and shipments
(18) Accompanies veterinary staff on medical rounds and assures procedures are followed
(19) Discusses morbidity and mortality with veterinary staff
(20) Regularly inspects and observes assigned collection for overall health and welfare.
The ideal candidate will have experience in managing a diverse animal collection and a commitment to establishing the highest standards of care and welfare. The position will suit an individual with a passion for arid land animals who is comfortable working in a multidisciplinary and multicultural institution and working beyond the traditions of a zoo. The successful candidate should have a Bachelor’s degree in zoology, animal science, or a related field is desirable. Experience working with represented labour is desirable. The candidate should have Minimum of 8 years working experience with exotic animals (mammals, birds and reptiles) and out of these minimum of 2 years working experience with Hoof Stock as supervisor. Experience in the development, design, construction and operation of new projects/exhibits is important.

Senior Animal Keeper – Hoof Stock Section

Port Lympne Wild Animal Park, situated in the south of Kent near Ashford, is an
established wild animal park with significant success in the captive breeding of rare
and endangered animals. We have an opportunity for an experienced, hardworking
and dedicated keeper to work with a small team of enthusiastic and likeminded
keepers on our hoof stock section.

Our collection of hoof stock animals includes buffalo, tapir, zebra, various antelope
and deer, bison, and wildebeest.

This is a very physical role and the successful applicant will be expected to undertake
all duties on the section from food preparation and cleaning, to enclosure building and
maintenance. Conservation education plays a big role in the park so there will be
plenty of opportunities for doing talks and displays to the public.

You must have significant experience in animal keeping at a senior keeper level
gained in a zoo park or equivalent environment with experience working with
hoofstock animals. A full valid driving licence and experience in driving tractors and
Land Rovers is also required. We are looking for an individual who is hardworking,
passionate and committed with knowledge of current conservation issues and
experience in presenting talks to the public. You will also need a flexible approach to
working hours, the confidence to represent the company in the media, a hands on
approach to the restraint and handling of animals and the ability to run the section in
the absence of the section manager and deputy.

Although not essential for the role a firearm licence and experience gained in off road
driving would be advantageous. Ideally you will have obtained an animal
management qualification or equivalent but if not you must be willing to work
towards obtaining a relevant qualification.

Working 40 hours a week, 5 days out of seven, 8.00am to 5.00pm
