Research Scientist, Cognitive & Learning Sciences (CLS)

In addition to assessments, we conduct educational research, analysis and policy studies and develop a variety of customized services and products for teacher certification, English language learning and elementary, secondary and postsecondary education.
Currently, our Research & Development area has an opening for a Research Scientist in our CLS group which applies cognitive and learning science methods to solve educational assessment problems. Our goal is to maintain valid, innovative technology-enhanced assessments to assess complex competencies for the 21st century education and workforce contexts. You will have expertise in the area of science education in order to work with a team on issues related to the theory, methods and tools for innovative assessment in science to measure and improve learning. We are particularly interested in applicants conducting research on the development, use, and validation of simulation-based and game-based assessment capabilities for formative and summative science assessment. Expertise in elementary, middle school, or high school cognition, assessment or instruction is highly desirable, with specific content expertise in earth science or physics desirable. Candidates with experience in programming and prototyping innovative technologies, strong quantitative skills, and knowledge of experimental design skills are preferred.
Our requirements include:
- A Ph.D. or Ed.D. in a Cognitive Science-related field, Educational Psychology, or Educational Technology or similar area.
- Emphasis on elementary science, middle school, or high school cognition and instruction is highly desirable, with specific content expertise in earth science or physics desirable.
- Three years of progressively independent research experience is necessary.
- Demonstrable scientific and technical skills in conceptualizing, designing, obtaining support for, conducting, and managing one or more of the following: (1) major research projects or (2) major development projects, particularly those for which scientific principles are applied to the creation of (1) interactive technologies that can be used to enhance educational assessments; (2) innovative assessment prototypes, tasks, or products; (3) rich cognitive models and representations of how students understand and learn targeted competencies and knowledge.
