Full time – 37.5 hours per week, permanent position
Salary £17,850 per annum

Bristol Zoo is proud and excited to take the first step on a journey towards achieving the ultimate goal of the National Wildlife Conservation Park by opening Wild Place in the summer of 2013.
Building on and celebrating the natural environment, Wild Place will be an invigorating setting that brings nature and the woodland to life. This family-led attraction will focus on fun, play and learning with children and adults being inspired to protect threatened habitats on their doorsteps as well as around the globe.
This role will assist the Operations Manager with general day to day operating duties for the site, and be crucial for ensuring our conservation and wildlife message is a top priority by delivering excellent animal care standards and enrichment on site.  You will be required to be flexible and assist with wider day to day operating duties as and when necessary. 

The successful applicant will be an experienced mammal keeper and will have experience of working with zoo animals, be educated to at least GCSE level, including English and a biological science, and hold the Diploma in the Management of Zoo and Aquarium Animals - DMZAA (previously known as ANCMZA).

Animal Nutrition Supervisor

 
Animal Nutrition Supervisor, Division of Conservation Development, Al Ain Wildlife Park and Resort, Abu Dhabi, UAE
The Al Ain Wildlife Park (AWPR) first developed as Al Ain Zoo in 1968 by the late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan is being redeveloped by the Abu Dhabi government as an expanded 900 hectare integrated biodiversity institution and resort. The new park will feature extensive exhibits of arid land biodiversity including five World Desert Habitats illustrating the animals, plants, landscapes and cultures of specific desert ecoregions, the Oasis Gardens, five Safaris exhibiting the landscapes and large mammals of five specific deserts. Phase 1 will open in November 2015 and will include the opening of the African World Desert based on the Samburu Region of Northern Kenya. The new Sheikh Zayed Desert Learning Centre is a new world class museum exhibiting the geology, culture and biodiversity of the United Arab Emirates and is a tribute to the environmental heritage of the late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan. The project has a strong conservation foundation with ongoing ex situ and in-country biodiversity projects in Arabia and NE Africa and developing partnerships with zoos, botanic gardens and cultural institutions. The current zoo site is being redeveloped as a new Conservation Breeding Centre dedicated to conservation and research. The project is being developed using the Abu Dhabi government’s sustainability guidelines (ESTIDAMA) and is committed to inspiring guests and visitors through creating an extraordinary set of landscape experiences and biodiversity encounters. AWPR is an integral part of the government of Abu Dhabi’s tourist infrastructure and a key component in the nation’s strategy of developing knowledge based economy. AWPR isa member of WAZA and is working towards full compliance with EAZA standards and policies.
AWPR is seeking an Animal Nutrition Supervisor is required toto ensure that the zoos animal collection receives the appropriate quantity and quality of feed based on species specific requirements. The Animal Nutrition Supervisor is responsible for ensuring implementation of animal nutrition protocols and daily programs. She/he is also responsible for developing and implementing standard operating procedures for function and review, and for updating SOPs when required. Animal Nutrition Supervisor is also required to develop animal enrichment plans and coordinate with other department supervisors to enhance animal enrichment standards in the back of house and core zoo exhibits. A key responsibility for this position is ensuring proper documentation of the daily activities, diet change and enrichment activities and report to the animal nutrition coordinator. On the other hand, he/she is also required to train and develop senior keepers and keepers within his/her function. . The Animal Nutrition Supervisor performs all job assignments with a positive attitude that reflects AlAin Zoo’s mission and vision of connecting people to wildlife and conservation. The position is responsible for the daily supervision of the safe care and handling of an assigned animal collection and constantly demonstrates leadership qualities and abilities to engage positive relationship with internal and external customers.
The Animal Nutrition Supervisor reports to the Section Head, Nutrition and Enrichment and will be responsible for for
(1)Prepare yearly work plans, objectives and assign responsibilities within the assigned nutrition area, 
(2) Promote and enforce company guidelines, policies and standards,
(3) Process diet changes as and when necessary, seeking all approvals and taking into consideration logistics of implementation, growth, reproduction, health and/or performance of animal(s) in question ,
(4) Maintaining, updating and communicating animal diet records for all animals in collection,
(5) Research the effectiveness of dietary items and regimes,
(6) Ensure the safe and proper handling/processing of food for animals, health and safety procedures and any other relevant topics,
(7) Liaise with producers, suppliers and other relevant partners to insure consistency of delivery, and required quality,
(8) Process animal food purchase requests using the ERP system and liaise with other relevant departments when required to insure the security of animal food acquisition,
(9) Directly supervise keeper and senior keeper areas and all aspects of their work and including the evaluation of their work performance,
(10) Supervise the day to day activities of the food center, forage and pellet warehouses. This includes and not limited to supervising staff, overseeing and inspecting food deliveries for quality and suitability, overseeing food preparation and distribution activities,
(11) Conduct research on new animal foods, suppliers and feeding techniques, (12) Observe and collect data e.g. on animal intake, food choices and generate reports,
(13) E Ensure proper documentation of all function related records and data, (14) Prepare daily and/or monthly reports as and when required. Participate in the Animal Collection Department regular meetings and planning sessions.
The ideal candidate will have experience in managing a diverse animal collection and a commitment to establishing the highest standards of care and welfare. The position will suit an individual with a passion for arid land animals who is comfortable working in a multidisciplinary and multicultural institution and working beyond the traditions of a zoo. The successful candidate should have a Bachelor’s degree in zoology, animal science, or a related field is desirable. Experience working with represented labor is desirable. The candidate should have Minimum of 4 - 6 years working experience with exotic animals (mammals, birds and reptiles) and out of these minimum of 2 years working experience with animal Nutrition as supervisor.

A key responsibility for this position is ensuring proper documentation of the daily activities, levels of production and breeding programs and report to the animal nutrition coordinator. On the other hand, he/she is also required to train and develop senior keepers and keepers within his/her function. The Animal Nutrition Supervisor performs all job assignments with a positive attitude that reflects AlAin Zoo’s mission and vision of connecting people to wildlife and conservation. The position is responsible for the daily supervision of the safe care and handling of an assigned animal collection and constantly demonstrates leadership qualities and abilities to engage positive relationship with internal and external customers.

(3) Maintain and oversee expansion of live food colonies including management of animal husbandry, genotyping and phenotyping ,

(5) Ensure the safe and proper handling/processing of live food, biosecurity, health and safety procedures and any other relevant topics,
(6) Liaise with Animal Nutrition Supervisor and other relevant partners to process live food material purchase requests to insure acquisition of requirements,
(7) Schedule, participate and assign workload for staff in assigned areas,
(8) Directly supervise keeper and senior keeper areas and all aspects of their work and including the evaluation of their work performance,
(9) Supervise the day to day activities of the live food unit. This includes and not limited to supervising staff, overseeing and inspecting live animals, breeding systems, handling and processing of live food and distribution activities. ,
(10) Conduct research on live food production, production systems, sustainability and other relevant topics,
(11) Observe and collect data e.g. on animal intake, selection/preference and generate reports,
(12) Ensure proper documentation of all function related records and data,
(13) Prepare daily and/or monthly reports as and when required. Participate in the Animal Collection Department regular meetings and planning sessions, (14) May participate in scientific meetings, conferences and workshops pertaining to his/her area.

Job Description

Job Purpose:-
This position is required to supervise entire bird collection at the zoo and ensure that all bird related standard operating procedures and work plans are implemented effectively.

Key Tasks and Duties:-
• Supervise staff at the level designated by senior management.
• Develop and mentor progress of UAE National staff.
• Supervises assigned staff

 • Trains and coaches staff regarding media contact, conflict resolution, and appropriate guest and customer relations.
• Assists with research projects as required.
• Provide on job training for senior keepers and keepers
• Support AWPR in career development programs designed for UAE nationals.
• Ensure effective implementation of the health and safety policies and regulations.
 • Prepare reports on daily, monthly basis and as required by the line manager.
• Prepare annual work plans for the assigned area.
• Any other relevant duties assigned by the line manager and or ACD manager.
• Undertakes similar or related duties where appropriate.
• Follow all AWPR EHS policies and procedures.

Skills
• A minimum of Bachelor’s degree in zoology, animal science, veterinary sciences, or a related field is desirable.
• Experience working with represented labour is desirable.
• Include considerable experience in supervision of animal care and handling of exotic animals in a zoological setting.
• Minimum of 8 years working experience with exotic animals(mammals, birds and reptiles) and out of these minimum of 2 years working experience with birds as supervisor.

The Role
  • To support the Department Head in the running of a busy herpetological department, managing the animal collection and contributing to the Trust’s conservation projects as required.
  • To manage and motivate departmental staff and aid them in their professional development.
  • To teach visiting students practical aspects of animal management, instigate research projects and support others conducting research.
  • To ensure that the husbandry of the collection conforms to our high standards of animal welfare and ethical guidelines.
  • To manage the collection and departmental resources during the absence of the Department Head.

Specification
  • Strong background in the captive husbandry of herpetological species with a minimum of 5 years’ experience working within zoological collections a necessity.
  • Practical experience of reptile and/or amphibian conservation projects desirable.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Degree in life sciences, biology, zoology or related field required.
  • Wide knowledge of biology, taxonomy, ecology and the captive requirements of the reptile and amphibian species for which the post is responsible.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills (English) and experience of delivering presentations.
  • Good organisational ability and project management skills desirable.
  • A high level of health and fitness as aspects of the job are physically demanding and a willingness to travel.
