Senior Veterinary Surgeon

 
Senior Veterinary Surgeon
  
We are seeking a Senior Veterinary Surgeon for our bear rescue centre in Chengdu, China (CBRC). The position will involve overall responsibility for the provision of extensive veterinary care to bears rescued from the bear bile industry, and to other resident animals and local domestic animals at each centre.
 
The Senior Veterinary Surgeon will report to the centre’s Bear and Vet Team Director, but will ultimately be responsible for all veterinary clinical decision making, and will supervise and manage a team comprising 2-3 qualified veterinary nurses and a Resident Veterinary Surgeon. He/She will be responsible for veterinary department budgeting and reporting, and may be required to travel within Asia and participate in outreach and training projects, and work with local veterinarians.

Requirements
§         At least 5 years work experience in a large mixed veterinary practice, zoological facility, specialist referral centre, or similar working environment.
§         Experience in a management or supervisory role.
§         Excellent clinical and organizational skills, an aptitude for problem-solving medicine and self-directed learning and plenty of initiative and flexibility.
§         A good sense of humor, excellent communication skills and the ability to live and work closely with the rest of the team comprising both western and local staff.
§         Cultural sensitivity and a history of working abroad, plus a background in captive wildlife management or charitable veterinary work are beneficial.
§         Suitable candidates must be able to commit for a minimum of 2 years.
 
Appointment is full-time, five (5) days a week with some weekend work applicable.

Senior Veterinarian, Division of Conservation and Education, Al Ain Wildlife Park and Resort (AWPR), Abu Dhabi, UAE
The Al Ain Wildlife Park (AWPR) first developed as Al Ain Zoo in 1968 by the late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan is being redeveloped by the Abu Dhabi government as an expanded 900 hectare integrated biodiversity institution and resort. The new park will feature extensive exhibits of arid land biodiversity including five World Desert Habitats illustrating the animals, plants, landscapes and cultures of specific desert ecoregions, the Oasis Gardens, five Safaris exhibiting the landscapes and large mammals of five specific deserts. Phase 1 will open in November 2015 and will include the opening of the African World Desert based on the Samburu Region of Northern Kenya. The new Sheikh Zayed Desert Learning Centre is a new world class museum exhibiting the geology, culture and biodiversity of the United Arab Emirates and is a tribute to the environmental heritage of the late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan. The project has a strong conservation foundation with ongoing ex situ and in-country biodiversity projects in Arabia and NE Africa and developing partnerships with zoos, botanic gardens and cultural institutions. The current zoo site is being redeveloped as a new Conservation Breeding Centre dedicated to conservation and research. The project is being developed using the Abu Dhabi government’s sustainability guidelines (ESTIDAMA) and is committed to inspiring guests and visitors through creating an extraordinary set of landscape experiences and biodiversity encounters. AWPR is an integral part of the government of Abu Dhabi’s tourist infrastructure and a key component in the nation’s strategy of developing knowledge based economy. AWPR is a member of WAZA and is working towards full compliance with EAZA standards and policies.
We currently have an exciting new position for a qualified Wild Life Veterinarian to join our Veterinary Science team as a Senior Veterinarian on a permanent full time basis. Reporting to the Manager Veterinary Services the successful candidate will work closely with Veterinary team ensuring excellent care for all animals at the Zoo.
The successful candidate will be responsible for proactively managing the health of the Zoo's animals while working closely with the Animal Collection team. In addition to this the successful candidate will be responsible for veterinary record keeping, assisting with teaching and training, providing veterinary input into AWPR conservation programmes and contributing to our conservation medicine projects and research.
The successful candidate will work with theManager Veterinary Servicesto ensure that AWPR grows as an active contributor to national, regional and international breeding and reintroduction projects and an active participant in EAZA and WAZA activities
The Senior Veterinarian will reports to the Manager Veterinary Services and will be responsible for
(1)Responsible for immunization of animals, disease screening, parasite surveillance and control, and vermin control,
(2)Reviews and analyses pathology records
(3)Liaise with local, regional and international institutions in issues related to different veterinary research activities
(4) Responsible for the co-ordination and supervision of the staff involved in approved veterinary research programmes,
(6)Responsible for implementing the prevention medicine program that include all practices that strengthen genetic and immunologic resistance to disease, (7) Responsible to provide effective quarantine program for all incoming and outgoing animals,
(8)Design/review of vaccination program based on the animal collection, diseases endemic to the area and potential for exposure,
(9)Design infectious disease screening program based on the prevalence of a disease in the vicinity of the Park,
(10) Periodic reviews of animal diet,
(11)As a part of preventive medicine program a periodic review of vermin control (both vertebrate and invertebrate) because of the potential for pests to serve as vectors or reservoirs of disease, (
12) Periodically review of mortality and morbidity as part of a preventive medicine program,
(13) Conducts clinical research, documents findings, and publishes in peer-reviewed scientific journals and other publications
The ideal candidate will have experience in managing a diverse animal collection and a commitment to establishing the highest standards of care and welfare. The position will suit an individual with a passion for arid land animals who is comfortable working in a multidisciplinary and multicultural institution and working beyond the traditions of a zoo. The successful candidate should be qualified Wild Life Veterinarian preferably with M.Sc in Veterinary Medicine or (DVM) Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from an accredited university. The candidate should have at least 6 -8 years of experience in a world class zoological institute/wild animal collection.
