FULL TIME SENIOR PRIMATE KEEPER




1 X FULL TIME SENIOR KEEPER; Primates (AZ)

Summary of Responsibilities

Adelaide Zoo requires an experienced, dedicated and committed Senior Primate Keeper with extensive Primate husbandry, people management and staff development skills. Experience working within recognized Zoological institutions is essential, along with involvement in relevant captive breeding programs. The applicant will play a vital role in development of this section, providing training to staff, assisting with collection development, and exhibit design. The incumbent must be motivated, and show a desire to encourage this section to strive for institutional and team goals and objectives. A major focus will be on breeding of key conservation species such as the Orang-utan, Golden-lion Tamarins and Gibbons, improved educational/presentation initiatives, behavioural enrichment and training and conditioning.

Experience and Qualifications

The successful applicant will be responsible for the daily operations, including managing numerous aspects of staffing and animal transactions, as well as the husbandry aspects of the collection within the Primate section. At times there is a requirement for the incumbent to supervise in absences of the Team Leader and other Senior keepers within the Primate and Carnivore team. This is a hands-on role, with approximately 80% of time spent on keeping rounds. Sound knowledge of Microsoft Office programs and excellent communication skills are essential. As the Senior is required to assist and advise their team in the progression of their Certificate III in Zoo Keeping, achievement of Certificate III is essential and a willingness to work towards Certificate IV is required.

Zoos South Australia is in a phase of new organisational restructure and conservation vision. A key driver in this structure has been to highlight the important role that native species play in supporting our vision. This position is to be based at Adelaide Zoo, within the Native Fauna Team. This team comprises of a dedicated bird section, native mammal section and reptile section.

We currently have a need for an experienced reptile keeper, with advanced venomous handling skills. Having experience working within other recognized Zoological institutions is essential. The applicant will play a vital role in development of the reptile section, providing training to staff, assisting with collection development, and exhibit design. The team supports various conservation programs, in-situ and ex-situ, and there is a potential for all staff to become involved in field work to support these programmes. Experience working in the field will be advantageous.

The successful applicant will be responsible for the daily operations and husbandry aspects of the collection within the reptile section. The applicant must also have the ability to work well in a team, have excellent communication skills and the ability to deliver public presentations.

FULL-TIME KEEPER: Native Fauna (Birds section)


Zoos South Australia is in an exciting phase of new organisational restructure and conservation vision. A key driver in this structure has been to highlight the important role that native species play in supporting our vision. These positions are based at Adelaide Zoo, within the newly formed Native Fauna Team, with a dedicated bird section, native mammal section and reptile section. The team supports various conservation programs, in-situ and ex-situ, and all positions have the opportunity to be involved in field work in support of programmes. Some field experience and knowledge of native species biology and an appreciation of the Modern Zoo role in conservation and Education will be advantageous.


The successful applicant will be responsible for the daily operations and husbandry aspects of the native fauna collection, primarily within the bird section, and as such will have proven husbandry experience preferably with avian species within a recognised zoological institution. The applicant must also have the ability to work well in a team, have excellent communication skills and the ability to deliver public presentations. Species management, training and conditioning as well as hand raising experience will also be highly beneficial.
