SENIOR ANIMAL DISPLAYS KEEPER

COLCHESTER ZOO


Colchester Zoo is currently looking to recruit an experienced keeper to join their Animal Displays Team. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to work with and train an exciting collection of birds and mammals and be part of continually developing and improving the daily displays.


The post requires the successful applicant to fly, train and care for a wide range of species including Eagles, Owls, Kestrels, Kites, Buzzards, Hawks, Falcons, Hornbills, Macaws, Raven, Guinea Fowl, Conures, Cockatoo, Coati and Skunks. They will be expected to take part in the daily educational animal presentations and will have the responsibility of being principle trainer for a number of animals. The successful applicant will need to be a highly motivated, hard working individual who has a good understanding of animal behaviour and previous experience training and working a variety of species. The ability to take part in public presentations is essential as well as exceptional animal husbandry skills, high standards of animal care and excellent skills in communication. Previous experience working with the above mentioned species is preferable however those candidates’s with any experience training animals will be considered.


Applicants must hold a qualification in the Zoo animal management certificate or equivalent and have a full valid driving licence.

Experienced Mammal Keeper

Colchester zoo currently has a vacancy for an experienced mammal keeper.

The ideal candidate will have a minimum of two years keeping experience in a recognised organisation and be able to demonstrate a sound working knowledge of animal husbandry. Experience of working with a range of species is highly desirable but not essential for this position as appropriate training will be provided by C.Z. It is expected that applicants will have an animal related qualification at Diploma level or above such as the DMZAA (ANCMZA) or similar.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the day to day management and presentation of enclosures covering all aspects of animal husbandry whilst working under the supervision of senior staff, and reporting directly to the deputy-head and head of sections respectively. You will be expected to assist and at other times lead animal presentations/talks to visitors; therefore a friendly confident manner and good public speaking skills are required for this position.

This is a full time position working 5 days per week on a 7 day rota so will include weekends and public holidays.

They will be expected to take part in the daily educational bird presentations and will have the responsibility of being principle trainer for a number of birds. The ability to take part in public presentations and flying bird displays is essential as well as exceptional animal husbandry skills, high standards of animal care and excellent skills in communication. Previous experience working with the above mentioned species is preferable but candidates with previous training experience with other animals will be considered.

Deputy Head of Elephants

Colchester Zoo has a vacancy for Deputy Head of our Elephant section. Colchester Zoo has been involved with artificial insemination projects with its elephants and has had positive results from both assisted reproduction and natural conception. This is a continuing effort as part of the African elephant EEP.

The ideal candidate will have a minimum of three years proven experience working in both free contact and protected contact environments in a mixed herd situation and have achieved the ANC in the management of zoo animals or an equivalent qualification. The candidate should be familiar with all aspects of animal management and have a thorough understanding of animal husbandry training, using positive reinforcement techniques; have staff supervisory experience, being able to develop and support staff as needed; demonstrate competence in a demanding workplace and have good communication and reporting skills.

The successful applicant will be required to provide daily elephant encounters and educational demonstrations to the zoo guests so should have a friendly and outgoing personality and be able to engage confidently with guests on both a one to one basis and to a large audience. QUALIFIED ANIMAL KEEPER



QUALIFIED ANIMAL KEEPER

Colchester Zoo is currently looking to recruit a qualified animal keeper to work as a Cover Keeper for a number of the animal sections within the Zoo.

The post will require the successful applicant to work with a range of species such as Rhino, Giraffe, Otters, Lemurs, Gelada Baboons, Hyena, Cheetah, Tigers, Pygmy hippo and Wolves to name but a few, as well different teams of staff on a number of sections as and when they need cover due to staff holidays or when assistance is needed with large projects. The position requires a quick learner who is flexible in their work and can adapt quickly to changes in routines and is able to carry out talks and presentations to the public.

The successful applicant will need to be a highly motivated, hard working individual with at least 2 years experience working in a zoological collection. Excellent customer service, communication and animal husbandry skills are essential and experience with any of the above named species is preferable. Applicants must hold a qualification in the Zoo animal management certificate or equivalent and have a full valid driving licence.

This is a full-time and permanent position and will require a start date as soon as is possible.

Colchester Zoo is currently looking to recruit an experienced Deputy Head of Section to join their Animal Displays Team. With new developments and species planned over the next year, the successful applicant will have the opportunity to be involved in completely re-developing the current Animal displays, and training some exciting new additions to the collection.

The post requires the successful applicant to train and care for a wide range of species including Macaws, Quaker Parakeets, Conures, Turaco, Iguana, Skunk, Coati and Lemurs. They will be expected to take part in the daily educational Animal presentations and will have the responsibility of being principle trainer for a number of animals. As a Deputy Head of Section the applicant will be responsible for supervising staff in the absence of the Head of Section and assisting the Head in maintaining working and husbandry standards. The successful applicant will need to be a highly motivated, hard working individual who has a good understanding of animal behaviour and previous experience training and working a variety of species, as well as previous experience managing and supervising staff. The ability to take part in public presentations is essential as well as excellent animal husbandry skills and high standards of animal care. Previous experience working with the above mentioned species is preferable but candidates with previous training experience with other animals will be considered.

Sealion and Penguin Trainer

Colchester Zoo are looking for an Experienced Sealion and Penguin Trainer to assist in the continued training and husbandry of our Patagonian sealions and Humboldt penguins.

The ideal applicant would have a minimum of three years experience working with sealions and penguins together with a recognised animal management qualification and basic knowledge of marine and fresh water LSS.

As well as the continued training and husbandry of these animals, duties will include daily presentations to the general public and mentoring members of staff ensuring continued development of team members.

You will provide support to the head of section, demonstrating excellent communication and decision making skills, being able to work as part of a team, or singularly when necessary.

A recognised scuba diving qualification and full clean driving license are preferred but not essential.
