Penguin Trainer



Ski Dubai is looking for a Penguin Trainer for their exciting and interesting project in United Arab Emirates. We fully appreciate that there are not a lot of people out there with Penguin training experience so you will learn this aspect on the job. We are keen to consider those with considerable animal husbandry experience who have an interest in promoting a educational conservation message to a multinational public.

The trainers will participate in the husbandry and training of the penguin collection, including the maintenance of holding area, preparation of diets/penguin feeding and the set-up and maintenance of presentation areas.

You will work with and alongside a team of friendly and dedicated international trainers. The penguins and the trainers ARE the team.

Our aim is to create leaders.




Key Tasks:
  • Monitor and perform daily feeding and training of King and Gentoo penguins
  • Monitor penguins and public during public demonstrations
  • Clean exhibit on a daily basis, including touch-up after presentations
  • Observe penguins for signs of stress or illness
  • Keep records current each day
  • Public speaking for a variety of penguin presentations and guest orientation
  • Performs other duties as required
  • Reliable

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Biology or Zoology or Diploma in the Management of Zoo and Aquarium Animals or related field or equivalent experience
  • Preferably three year of training experience, ideally with marine mammals. Alternative expertise in animal husbandry given serious consideration
Key Competencies:
  • Previous experience in maintaining living specimens
  • Ability to work well with staff and supervisors
  • Ability to perform well under duress typical of positions dealing with living organisms
  • Able to work alone and to work with others
Typical Physical Demands:
  • Be able to lift 50 lbs. to shoulder height
  • Carry materials, transport boxes, buckets, etc. throughout the facility
  • Able to work on rota
  • Standing, walking for long periods in a cold environment
About Dubai

Dubai is a great place to work. There are 400 different nationalities living and working here. It is a safe and friendly place to live. Although a Muslim country everyone is free to practice their own religion, women can drive and pretty nearly everything you can get in the US or Europe is available here...and then some. The climate is very hot for six months of the year and beautiful for the other six months. We have the best restaurants and the best chefs in the world. The best bands are regular visitors and the range of entertainment available is immense.

Senior Trainer of Penguins




Ski Dubai is looking for a further Senior Trainer of Penguins for its exciting and successful project in the United Arab Emirates.

Joining an experienced International team the Senior Trainer will be responsible for the daily management of staff, daily husbandry, penguin training and leading all high quality penguin presentations


Key Tasks:

  • Operate daily training of penguins regarding daily march, feeding and photo sessions with the public
  • Evident knowledge of effective training techniques, applications, and tools
  • Assist in penguin husbandry and cleaning
  • Maintain daily training records
  • Interact with the public with ease and have good communication skills
  • Performs other duties as required

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Biology or Zoology or related field or equivalent experience
  • At least 4 years of training experience, preferably with marine mammals

Key Competencies:

  • All aspects of maintaining an animal population
  • Good organizational skills
  • Strong computer skills leading to reporting structure
  • Strong leadership skills
  • Daily staff supervision and team dynamics
  • Strong staff motivational skills
  • Staff development
  • Theater or public speaking experience
  • Problem solving skills / able to take decisions
  • Communication between departments and facilities
  • Working with water/air quality analytical equipment

Typical Physical Demands:

  • Be able to lift 50 lbs. to shoulder height
  • Carry materials, transport boxes, buckets, etc. throughout the facility
  • Standing, walking for long periods in a cold environment

Sealion and Penguin Trainer

Colchester Zoo are looking for an Experienced Sealion and Penguin Trainer to assist in the continued training and husbandry of our Patagonian sealions and Humboldt penguins.

The ideal applicant would have a minimum of three years experience working with sealions and penguins together with a recognised animal management qualification and basic knowledge of marine and fresh water LSS.

As well as the continued training and husbandry of these animals, duties will include daily presentations to the general public and mentoring members of staff ensuring continued development of team members.

You will provide support to the head of section, demonstrating excellent communication and decision making skills, being able to work as part of a team, or singularly when necessary.

A recognised scuba diving qualification and full clean driving license are preferred but not essential.
