Postdoc at Michigan State

Applications are invited for a post-doctoral researcher in Physics Education in CREATE4STEM and the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Michigan State University. The successful candidate for the current position will work to develop and refine instructional materials for a new calculus-based mechanics course taught around project-based inquiry, will collect data on student learning as well as faculty practice in the course, and will assist in the analysis of the collected data.

Responsibilities include working in coordination with physics and education faculty to:
* develop an integrated plan of course evaluation and innovation;
* identify specific learning goals that represent faculty-consensus;
* develop valid assessments of student learning in this course;
* participate in and supervise the development of instructional routines, materials, and practices for improving student learning in this course; and
* publish assessment tools and findings in Physics Education journals.
The candidate will collaborate with faculty, post-docs, and graduate students in Michigan State's CREATE4STEM Institute (http://www.create4stem.msu.edu/) and in the Physics Education Research Lab (http://www.create4stem.msu.edu/group/perl).

The appointment is initially for one year, with the possibility of a one year extension for a total of two years, based on performance and the availability of funding. The salary will be competitive and commensurate with experience. Appointment is contingent upon successfully completing a full background check.

Candidates are expected to hold a Ph.D. in STEM or STEM education. Candidates who hold a Ph.D. in physics, specifically in physics education is preferred. Additionally, candidates with curriculum development and project management experience, knowledge of mixed-methods research, and experience with computational modeling in the any programming language are highly preferred. The Graduate School of Education at Rutgers University is seeking to hire an outstanding scholar in the learning sciences with a research focus in one of the STEM fields. The GSE has a core group of faculty who work within the field of the learning sciences who are looking to broaden and expand this expertise. We are seeking a scholar who has demonstrated significant accomplishment via publications and funding and who will be able to establish an independent research agenda within a highly collaborative environment. Therefore, the position is open to individuals of all ranks, including assistant professors with an established record of accomplishment. We are seeking individuals who have deep understanding of design and have strong classroom-based research experience. The specific substantive area of interest is open. The successful candidate will be able to provide evidence of teaching ability and will be expected to teach courses for masters and doctoral level students, and may also teach occasional undergraduate courses. In addition, the candidate should provide evidence of having successful collaborations with students and with other colleagues within and/or across institutions. The candidate must have an earned doctorate in a relevant field. Part-time replacement at Kalamazoo College

Part-Time Instructor or Adj. Asst. Prof. of Physics

January – June 2014

The Kalamazoo College Physics Department invites applications for a part-time leave replacement position at the instructor or assistant professor level, January to June, 2014. The position would be half to two-thirds time (20-30 hours/week) and would involve teaching physics at the introductory level in a team-taught, active learning environment. Our department employs an active-learning “flipped classroom” environment in which class and lab are combined and relatively little time is spent lecturing. The introductory physics courses are calculus based, and use the well-known textbook Physics – A Strategic Approach by Randall Knight. Minimum qualifications are a relevant master’s degree and significant teaching experience in undergraduate physics courses. The ideal candidate will have excellent communication skills and command of the English language, will be excited about teaching physics to undergraduates, and will be familiar with and invested in the results of Physics Education Research. Compensation will depend on qualifications.

    This position will have two distinct roles: (1) to oversee and coordinate undergraduate academic advising activities for physics and pre-engineering majors and (2) to coordinate, implement, and enhance the Department of Physics and Astronomy’s interaction and public persona with current and future undergraduate students.  This is a complex position requiring familiarity with academic requirements for Physics academic options, Pre-engineering requirements, and transfer options to engineering schools, University of Montana general education requirements, as well as special programs such as Global Leadership Initiative and Four Bear. Responsibilities will include: advising students on selecting and scheduling classes; helping students develop individualized plans for graduation; organizing and conducting orientations for new students; evaluating transcripts of transfer students; helping to select undergraduate students for scholarships and awards; communicating with undergraduate students about opportunities for Research Experiences for Undergraduates, internships, jobs, and important deadlines; linking students with appropriate faculty mentors; reviewing and approving graduation applications; shepherding a Physics and Astronomy Facebook page directed at current and potential undergraduates; managing outreach and recruitment programs throughout the state; and handling associated administrative travel and student hiring coordination.  This position will organize fundraising events for the department while being the primary alumni contact for the department; will supervise undergraduate students and volunteers for departmental related events; will be the primary contact for student hiring and payroll paperwork as well as longitudinal student tracking using a database.  Additional responsibilities for this position include coordinating with all faculty and staff for recruitment and fundraising opportunities, facility scheduling for the Society of Physics Students, DSS students, and make-up exams and will act as a backup for the administrative associate for the department.  The Academic Advisor II/Recruitment and Retention Specialist will need to show a great deal of initiative and independence.  It will be their responsibility to develop, implement, and evaluate the undergraduate-advising program, which involves many different components, and to initiate recruitment and retention programs.  This person will need to be a self-starter and an independent problem solver.

    This position requires incumbent to develop working knowledge of UM policies and procedures relating to course registration and graduation requirements; working knowledge of university catalog, resources and general education requirements; working knowledge of current advising practices and FERPA regulations.

    STEM Education and Assessment Fellows
    University of Colorado Boulder

    Applications are invited for two post-doctoral associates in the newly formed Center for STEM Learning at the University of Colorado, Boulder. The successful candidates will work on educational transformation through a project focused on institution wide transformation, sponsored by the American Association of Universities. The overall project seeks to promote the use of research based instructional and assessment strategies.  Responsibilities will primarily center on supporting faculty in the change process by identifying appropriate material resources to support assessment of teaching in multiple STEM disciplines, working closely with department leads to provide professional consultations with participating faculty on the use of identified materials, supporting the implementation of assessment measures by managing data collection and analysis, and consulting with faculty to reflect on the results.  Associates will also work with project staff to develop an online campus-wide, potentially national, portal to assist faculty in finding libraries of educational measures, easing use of such measures and sharing results.  Opportunities will also exist for working toward promoting the use of evidence-based measures of teaching impact and conducting research on the process of institutional transformation.   The Fellows will collaborate with a broad group of engaging and nationally renowned faculty, post-docs, and graduate students across multiple STEM departments at the University of Colorado.  The overall project also includes studies of institutional transformation, and provides opportunities for postdocs to participate in studies of individual and institutional uptake of new assessment tools and practices.

    Qualifications: The successful candidates will have a strong disciplinary background in a STEM area and extensive experience in education research. Experience in physics, biology or mechanical engineering is a plus as these are the initial departments on the project. The appointment is a one-year, renewable appointment with the preference that the successful candidate will be able to commit to the project for 2 years. The salary will be competitive and commensurate with experience.

    Term Position at George Mason U, Fairfax VA



    Term Instructor/Assistant/Associate Professor - Physics and STEM Program

    The George Mason University, College of Science invites applications for a Term Instructor or Assistant/Associate Professor position to support the School of Physics, Astronomy and Computational Sciences (SPACS) as well as our STEM program. This is a 12-month instructional faculty position beginning in fall 2013 with the possibility of yearly renewal based on performance.

    Responsibilities:

    The selected candidate will teach physics courses in SPACS and also work with the STEM Accelerator program to increase undergraduate student's success from the time a student enters Mason until the time the student graduates and starts a career.     TT at Atlanta Metropolitan State College

    Atlanta Metropolitan State College, a four-year degree-granting institution of the University System of Georgia, is accepting applications for an Assistant Professor of Physics and Engineering.     This is a full-time, tenure track, ten-month faculty position, which reports to the Dean of the Division of Science Mathematics and Health Professions.
