FT Physics/Astro at Tallahassee CC

Tallahassee Community College announces an opening for the following continuing contract instructional and library faculty position for 2014-2015. Tallahassee Community College is a dynamic and growing comprehensive community college located in Tallahassee, Florida. The College's 2013 fall enrollment of more than 13,500 students includes nearly 47 percent minority students. The College enjoys a strong reputation for teaching excellence and for producing graduates with Associate in Arts degrees, Associate in Science degrees, and college credit certificates. NATURAL SCIENCES

Physics/Astronomy Assistant Professor. A Master's degree in physics, physical science or related area of study, or a Master's degree with a minimum of 18 graduate semester hours in physics, physical science or related area of study. The primary teaching assignment is calculus based physics, trigonometry based physics, and general education astronomy and physics.

Responsibilities: The Physics Department at Normandale Community College seeks a qualified candidate to teach a broad spectrum of college Physics and Astronomy courses. Teaching assignments may include evening and weekend classes.
The successful candidate will be expected to:

· Providing quality instruction and services to students of all ages and backgrounds and diversity.
· Prepare and distribute to students course syllabi based on the approved common course outlines.

· Direct and assist students in laboratory.

Minimum Qualifications:
· Master's degree with a major in, physics, astronomy, or astronomy, or with 24 graduate quarter/16 semester credits in, physics, astronomy, or astronomy which would apply to the major.

Preferred Qualifications:
· Ph.D. in physics, astrophysics, astronomy or a closely related discipline.
· Demonstrated commitment to serving a culturally, ethnically and linguistically diverse student body.
· Teaching experience in a variety of physics and astronomy courses.
· Community college experience.
· Experience teaching online and using a course management system, such as Desire 2 Learn, teaching laboratories and active learning principles.
· Experience using Vernier LoggerPro or Pasco DataStudio software, and software for Astronomy labs.
· Experience assessing curriculum and instruction.
· Demonstrate commitment to participating in campus activities, professional development, and high standards.

Date of Employment: August 20, 2014. Classes begin on August 25, 2014 through academic year.

Salary Range: Starting salary (based on education and experience) is expected to range from $37,000 - $68,000. We offer an outstanding benefits package.

This is a full time position beginning with the Spring 2014 Semester. Starting salary $53,322 – $88,936 depending on qualifications and experience. Salary is based on a nine-month teaching contract and will be pro-rated accordingly. Newly hired instructors serve a three-year probationary period.

Organizational Function and Responsibilities:
To instruct adult students in in atmospheric sciences at the college level. This includes developing a relevant and progressive curriculum, designing and implementing effective learning strategies and environments, delivering instruction of high quality, assessing student learning, advising students, and participating in college service activities at the department, division and college levels.

This position reports to the Dean for the School of Arts and Sciences.

Essential Duties:
The following duties are typically expected of this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

1. Facilitates student learning in the Physical Sciences program which may include, but not be limited to the following curriculum areas: Weather & Climate, Climate & Climate Change. 2. Develops and plans appropriate instructional strategies, including alternative delivery strategies when appropriate including but not limited to hybrid, face-to-face, accelerated, online course delivery, active learning, and flipped classrooms.

4. Evaluates student performance and provides regular feedback in courses taught by the instructor.

6. Actively works with other personnel in student recruitment, retention and job placement. This includes developing strategies aimed at the recruitment and retention of minority students.

7. Develops and maintains curriculum in a variety of non-traditional formats to meet student delivery needs in collaboration with department/ division staff; participate in instructional and curriculum articulation activities with other programs, other Schools of the College, other colleges and universities, and District K-12 partners.

8. Functions without direct supervision in a team environment with the ability to support a cohesive department atmosphere.

9. Complies with college policies and directions regarding student testing, record keeping, advanced standing, providing grades on a timely basis, maintaining office hours for student assistance and counseling, etc.

10. Assists students in developing work experience assignments such as clinical affiliations, work study assignments, team projects, etc.

11. Designs and implements strategies to engage students in the learning process.

This position is responsible for providing instruction in accordance with the philosophy and objectives of the College.  
Adhere to approved course syllabi. Provide students with the course syllabus that informs them of course requirements including specific objectives, means of attaining those objectives and methods of evaluation by the end of the first week of classes.

The Position:
Instruct a variety of lecture and laboratory courses in Physics. Provide leadership in the development of a comprehensive physics curriculum. Participate in program review process and student learning outcome (SLO) process. Assist with the development and operation of appropriate instructional facilities and related interdisciplinary programs. Comply with all SOCCCD, IVC, MSE Academic Unit, and Physics Department policies with regard to participation in general faculty functions related to the educational program, staff development/flex-calendar activities, committee work, and departmental and school meetings. Maintain formal office hours. Perform necessary clerical and administrative tasks in a timely manner. Assume a leadership role in the intellectual growth and academic success of a diverse student population through the careful preparation of course materials and the employment of effective teaching methodologies. Assignment may include day, evening, or weekend hours.

Minimum Qualifications:
The successful candidate must meet one of the following criteria:
1. Master's degree or higher in physics, astronomy, or astrophysics from an accredited college or university; OR
2. Bachelor's degree in physics or astronomy AND a Master's degree in engineering, mathematics, meteorology, or geophysics from an accredited college or university; OR
3. Valid California Community College instructor credential appropriate to the subject per Education Code 87355 (issued prior to July 1, 1990); OR
4. A combination of education and experience that is at least the equivalent of items 1 or 2 above (Applicants applying on the basis of equivalency must submit the Supplemental Application for Equivalency Determination form in addition to all other required materials).

Experience Required:
· Two (2) years of recent full-time (or equivalent part-time) experience teaching physics, lecture and laboratory, at the college level.
· Minimum of one (1) year (full- or part time) of work experience in higher education.
· Evidence of sensitivity to, and understanding of, the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

Desired Qualifications:
Preference will be given to those candidates demonstrating a high level of professional expertise on the basis of:
· Minimum of one (1) year of work experience in Physics-related industry or higher education.
· Experience in designing laboratory experiments.
· Demonstrated skills in communicating effectively, both written and orally, with students and colleagues.
· Evidence of experience and proficiency in the use of laboratory equipment and instruction appropriate to college physics courses.
· Evidence of strong commitment to remain current in physics and its instructional programs.
· Evidence of academic experience in teaching and developing curriculum in physics.
· Knowledge of and ability to integrate computer technology in the classroom.
