Hamerton Zoo Park
Education Officer
(With responsibility for Health and Safety)
Full-time: Monday – Friday

Description:
An Education Officer Post has arisen at Hamerton Zoo Park. We are looking for an enthusiastic and outgoing individual who can create and implement a fun and informative education programme aimed at a variety of ages. This position will also require the individual to create a new Health and Safety Policy.

Health and Safety:
Creation of a Health and Safety Policy from scratch covering all aspects of the parks operations, plus the ongoing maintenance and revision of same.
The creation of Risk Assessments for internal use and for general public and school visits, animal contact sessions, children’s parties, outside contractors, school contact sessions and any others where required - all in association with our animal staff, director and regulatory authorities.

Educational Programmes:
Schools and other groups:
The successful applicant will be required to create a formal education policy, following the collection of data from schools and other groups, by comparison with other zoos, parks and similar venues. Being able to work alone and as part of a team is vital for this position as you will be expected to maximise group numbers, footfall and revenue in many areas, including Photography Groups, Animal contact sessions, and creating a new income stream through (but not limited to), organising Children’s Parties, Face Painting and Keeper-for-a-Day schemes.

The Education Officer will also be required to assist with the Zoo’s Photography Groups and Animal Contact Sessions.

Implement the new education policy which may involve creating worksheets, gift packs, organising animal contacts, and designing and giving lectures. Therefore excellent communication skills and excellent written English are expected.

A full driving license is also needed as you will be expected to be able to travel to schools to give such talks and activities if required.

Public Talks:
The successful applicant will be required to formulate and give public talks in association with our animal staff and volunteers.

Keeper Duties:
The successful applicant will also be a cover keeper to familiarise themselves with all aspects of our animal collection, and be able to assist keepers with daily duties if required.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Education Officer to join Amazonia, Scotland's Indoor Tropical Rainforest based in Motherwell.


Amazonia is an indoor tropical zoo, exhibiting various species of primates, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish and invertebrates.


As new members to BIAZA, this is an exciting time for Amazonia, with a lot of developments planned for the future.


Amazonia is seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual to implement an interesting and exciting education program aimed at improving public understanding of the natural world.


The successful applicant will be expected to:
- Implement an education strategy that addresses all forms of education, including development of new programs
- Organise education activities and presentations for zoo visitors, including seasonal activities
- Deliver national curriculum-linked teaching to a range of age groups
- Make educational outreach visits to schools and other institutions
- Deliver interesting and exciting public presentations
- Assist in the organisation of zoo events
- Develop and organise a team of education volunteers
- Prepare and develop educational resources including the development of Amazonia's website
- Develop Amazonia's interpretation and signage
- Prepare and deliver 'Amazonia Explorers' kids club
- Carry out general keeper duties


NECESSARY SKILLS REQUIRED:
- Motivated individual who can work alone and as part of a team
- Bachelors degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline (e.g. biology, zoology, conservation, environmental science, science education)
- A minimum of 2 years experience working within a zoological collection - Experience of teaching at primary and secondary levels
- Awareness of the role of zoos in environmental education and biodiversity conservation
- Excellent presentation, communication and inter-personal skills
- Excellent written English
- Computing skills including Microsoft Office, Excel, PowerPoint and Word
- Ability to work alone and as part of a team
- Flexible approach to work and ability to work under pressure
- Full driving licence


DESIRABLE SKILLS:
- Teaching qualification
- Experience of fundraising


This is a full time permanent position, working 45 hours per week, with 28 days annual holiday. Applicant must be willing to work irregular hours including evenings and weekends as required.

Birdworld vacancy: Education Officer




An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Education Team at Birdworld Bird Park and Gardens, comprising Birdworld, Underwater World and the Jenny Wren Farm, in Farnham, Surrey.

The education team is responsible for the planning and delivery of educational sessions and presentations offered to the general public and to visiting schools and colleges. The team is specifically responsible for the training and husbandry of birds and animals used in presentations and is included in the aviculture team responsible for the husbandry and welfare of bird stock throughout the park. In addition to this the team produces content for park interpretation and species signs.



Required:

• Motivated individual who can work alone and as part of a team

• Confident in public speaking to audiences of all ages

• Experience of keeping and training birds/animals

• Excellent written English

• Full driving license



Preferred:

• Tertiary qualification in a biological science

• Experience with delivering presentations in a captive animal collection

• Experience in the education sector

Job description: The UK's most visited zoo is seeking a highly motivated individual to assist the implementation of an education program aimed at improving public understanding of the natural world and its plight. The successful applicant will be expected to:



  1. Assist in the implementation of an education strategy that addresses all forms of education, including development of new programs;
  2. Organise education activities for zoo visitors, including trails, arts and crafts, face-painting and presentations;
  3. Co-ordinate school, college and youth group visits;
  4. Prepare and develop educational resources;
  5. Deliver national curriculum-linked teaching;
  6. Make educational outreach visits to schools and other institutions;
  7. Write zoo news and website articles;
  8. Assist in the organisation of zoo events;
  9. Develop and organize a team of education volunteers;
  10. Assist in the general duties involved in the running of the Education Department.

As a member of BIAZA and EAZA, Flamingo Land has a long-term commitment to biodiversity conservation and environmental education. Flamingo Land funds and directs the Udzungwa Forest Project in East Africa, and a Biodiversity Action Plan for a 375 acre area in North Yorkshire. These projects aim to conserve both tropical and UK biodiversity, through ecological monitoring, education and capacity-building in local communities. Flamingo Land is also home to the University of York Centre for the Integration of Research, Conservation and Learning (CIRCLE), which aims to carry out ground-breaking scientific research, which is disseminated in a way that is interesting, educational and fun.



Key selection criteria

ESSENTIAL

- Bachelors degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline (e.g. biology, zoology, conservation, environmental science, science education)

- Experience of teaching at primary and secondary levels

- Experience of teaching evaluation methods

- Proven dedication towards public understanding of the natural world

- Awareness of the role of zoos in environmental education and biodiversity conservation

- Excellent presentation skills

- Excellent inter-personal skills

- Excellent creative writing skills (including spelling and grammar)

- Computing skills including Microsoft Office, Excel, Powerpoint and Word

- Awareness of the value of data gathering for the assessment of education

- Ability to work alone and as part of a team

Twycross Zoo – East Midland Zoological Society (TZEMZS), the World Primate Centre, has over 1,000 animals and is the most comprehensive collection of primate species and subspecies in the western world.

We currently have a vacancy for an Education Officer within our Education Department.

Reporting to our Head of Education, the key purpose of this role is to prepare and deliver talks for groups of students from pre-school age up to undergraduate level and produce educational material for the Zoo. You will also attend exhibitions, market the Zoo’s educational services and deal with enquiries and queries from the public and visitors.

The successful applicant will have a degree in a Zoo-related subject and will ideally hold a teaching qualification or have significant teaching experience. Excellent presentation skills are essential along with an outgoing and confident personality. Experience in handling small animals would be preferred.

The role is full time: 9.00am-5:30pm, 5 days out of 7.

Education Officer

Salary range £17,500 - £18,180 per annum

Our Learning Department requires a full-time Education Officer to provide maternity cover starting on Monday, 21st May 2012; the position could last for up to six months.
You will be required to teach sessions within the Zoo’s purpose-built Conservation Education Centre, on a range of topics, to booked groups of varying age and ability; also to assist with many other tasks within the Department, including seasonal activities.

The successful applicant will have excellent communication skills, wildlife and conservation knowledge with the enthusiasm to share this with others. The ability to work independently and as part of a team. You must be flexible and able to work under pressure. Basic ICT skills are essential.
