Education Officer




Education Officer

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Education Officer to join Amazonia, Scotland's Indoor Tropical Rainforest based in Motherwell.


Amazonia is an indoor tropical zoo, exhibiting various species of primates, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish and invertebrates.


As new members to BIAZA, this is an exciting time for Amazonia, with a lot of developments planned for the future.


Amazonia is seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual to implement an interesting and exciting education program aimed at improving public understanding of the natural world.


The successful applicant will be expected to:
- Implement an education strategy that addresses all forms of education, including development of new programs
- Organise education activities and presentations for zoo visitors, including seasonal activities
- Deliver national curriculum-linked teaching to a range of age groups
- Make educational outreach visits to schools and other institutions
- Deliver interesting and exciting public presentations
- Assist in the organisation of zoo events
- Develop and organise a team of education volunteers
- Prepare and develop educational resources including the development of Amazonia's website
- Develop Amazonia's interpretation and signage
- Prepare and deliver 'Amazonia Explorers' kids club
- Carry out general keeper duties


NECESSARY SKILLS REQUIRED:
- Motivated individual who can work alone and as part of a team
- Bachelors degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline (e.g. biology, zoology, conservation, environmental science, science education)
- A minimum of 2 years experience working within a zoological collection - Experience of teaching at primary and secondary levels
- Awareness of the role of zoos in environmental education and biodiversity conservation
- Excellent presentation, communication and inter-personal skills
- Excellent written English
- Computing skills including Microsoft Office, Excel, PowerPoint and Word
- Ability to work alone and as part of a team
- Flexible approach to work and ability to work under pressure
- Full driving licence


DESIRABLE SKILLS:
- Teaching qualification
- Experience of fundraising


This is a full time permanent position, working 45 hours per week, with 28 days annual holiday. Applicant must be willing to work irregular hours including evenings and weekends as required.

Amazonia Manager




Amazonia is an indoor tropical rainforest themed exhibit situated within M andD’s theme park, Strathclyde Country Park, Motherwell.

We are looking to recruit a manager to oversee all aspects of the successful running of the facility including animal management, staff management, education, reception and retail, and liaison with other departments of M and D leisure ltd. It is a varied and challenging role that will prove hugely rewarding for the right person.

Duties and Responsibilities

-Attending to the husbandry requirements of a varied small animal collection which will involve writing and updating protocols and training staff in their implementation
-Co-ordinating education visits to ensure they run smoothly and that group organisers are happy with their visit
-Liaising with directors and senior management to ensure that expectations are met
-Liaising with sales and marketing to ensure optimum commercial operation of the facility
-Ensuring that the standards of the SSSMZP are met and exceeded
-Keeping accurate records
-Overseeing all staff and volunteers to ensure efficient operation of the facility and filling in for any role when necessary to allow for busy periods, staff sickness and holidays
-Monitoring stock of food and supplies and re-ordering as necessary
-Cashing up reception tills at end of day
-Developing and implementing a collection plan
-Overseeing the process of obtaining full BIAZA membership

Person required
-As this is an extremely varied role we require an organised individual with the ability to multi-task and delegate as appropriate
-Confident and outgoing who enjoys communicating with a wide range of people.
-Has at least 3 years experience working with exotic animals, in a managerial or supervisory capacity and experience delivering education
-Must be familiar with all aspects of zoo licensing legislation
-Holds the ANCMZA/DMZAA or equivalent and ideally a 1st degree in an animal related subject. Extensive experience may be considered in lieu of qualifications
-Full driving license and own transport essential Hours and pattern of work
-Approximately 40 hours per week with the ability to be flexible when the workload requires it
-Expected to work weekends, bank holidays and school holidays as part of a rota

Salary
-Negotiable depending on qualifications and experience
