Librarian (Technical Services) - U.S. Coast Guard Academy, New London

Librarian (Technical Services) - U.S. Coast Guard Academy, New London. GS-1410-09 I. Position Summary: This position is located in the Library of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, New London, Connecticut, a four-year, accredited, degree granting institution and center of leadership development for the Coast Guard. The instant position reports to the Library Director and is a member of the Technical Services team led by the Systems Librarian/Head of Technical Services. The incumbent employs standard methods, techniques, concepts, and principles of librarianship to provide professional library services, such as cataloging and classifying materials and maintaining library collections. The incumbent assists the Systems Librarian in the authentication, activation and maintenance of access to paper and electronic serials. The employee is expected and to stay abreast of technology changes, and may make recommendations for improvements to cataloging and serial policies and procedures and workflows. II. Major Duties and Responsibilities: A. Catalogs and classifies materials, including serials, electronic resources, DVDs, microforms, and archives using established local practices and national and international standards such as Anglo-American Cataloging Rules, MARC, Resource Description and Access(RDA), Library of Congress Subject Headings and classification schedules, and other metadata standards. B. Performs database maintenance when needed in the course of daily work or as a part of projects. C. Maintains quality control standards in own work by checking for and correcting errors. D. Maintains serials local holdings in OCLC and assists the Systems Librarian in purchasing, licensing, and access of serials. E. Works with the Systems Librarian to maintain Serials Solutions products, library catalog, and electronic resources and provides other systems support as required. F. Supports and helps train library technicians assigned to copy cataloging, database maintenance, processing materials, and maintaining serials. G. Assists in maintaining library collections, including government documents, special and Coast Guard collections, serials, and microforms. Assists with planning and coordinating the shifting of the collections as necessary. H. Assists in the preparation of administrative reports and maintains statistics. Helps establish policies and procedures for cataloging and serials. I. Participates in rotations at the Circulation/Reference Desk. J. Serves on library and Academy committees as appropriate. Actively participates on any assigned teams. Team tasks may include: fourth class cadet library tours, participating in the physical property inventory, shelf-reading, etc. Key Requirements: U.S. Citizenship is required. This position requires a National Agency Check with Inquiries (NACI). This is a federal civil service position with a salary range at the GS-09 level ($52,295.00 to $67,978.00). Technical Services Librarian - Southern Connecticut State University, Hilton C. Buley Library. Department: Library Services. Rank: Temporary 1 year appointment. Specialization(s): Technical Services Librarian. Brief Description of Duties/Responsibilities: The Technical Services Librarian works primarily as a cataloger in the Technical Services (TS) Division, responsible for organizing and providing intellectual access to Buley Library resources. Responsibilities include original, complex, and copy cataloging of monographs, print and non-print serials, audiovisual materials, curriculum materials, theses, rare books, and internet resources in all subject areas. The TS Librarian works with TS Division members to develop/revise policies and procedures for cataloging a variety of information formats according to AACRII and RDA standards and Library of Congress protocols within an automated environment and in collaboration with consortium members, joins in system-wide authority control initiatives. The librarian may also participate in duties such as digital initiatives, collection development activities, and other tasks as assigned. Required Qualifications: ALA accredited MLS or equivalent. Minimum of 1 year cataloging experience, preferably in an academic library. Knowledge and experience with MARC21, Anglo American Cataloging Rules II and application and interpretation of Library of Congress Headings and Classification. Direct knowledge and experience with OCLC Connexion and experience with an Integrated Library System (ILS). Knowledge of national standards and trends in cataloging and technical services. Basic knowledge of RDA (Resource Description and Access). Strong commitment to service and ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Experience with III Millennium ILS preferred. Knowledge of a foreign language preferred. Knowledge of metadata standards such as Dublin Core preferred. Library Assistant - E. O. Smith High School, Storrs/Mansfield, CT (10 month position beginning late August, 2012). Job requirements: Enthusiastic and committed individual with a desire to supervise and work with teens. Responsibilities include managing the circulation desk and overdue materials, organizating all periodical and newspaper subscriptions, providing reference assistance to students and staff, maintaining library usage statistics, and computer trouble shooting. Ability to attend to task details with self-direction, excellent interpersonal and organizational skills with the ability to multi-task a necessity. Minimum two years of college and/or library experience preferred; library technician/technology assistant certificate also welcome.
