FT Physics/Astro at Tallahassee CC

Tallahassee Community College announces an opening for the following continuing contract instructional and library faculty position for 2014-2015. Tallahassee Community College is a dynamic and growing comprehensive community college located in Tallahassee, Florida. The College's 2013 fall enrollment of more than 13,500 students includes nearly 47 percent minority students. The College enjoys a strong reputation for teaching excellence and for producing graduates with Associate in Arts degrees, Associate in Science degrees, and college credit certificates. NATURAL SCIENCES

Physics/Astronomy Assistant Professor. A Master's degree in physics, physical science or related area of study, or a Master's degree with a minimum of 18 graduate semester hours in physics, physical science or related area of study. The primary teaching assignment is calculus based physics, trigonometry based physics, and general education astronomy and physics.

JOB DETAILS:
The Department of Engineering Physics invites applications for two or more full time lecturers in Physics for the 2014-2015 academic year. Salary is competitive with excellent benefits. Appointment date is August 19, 2014.
QUALIFICATIONS:
M.S. (by June 30, 2014), Ph.D. or ABD in Physics or related field. Candidates must have one year of teaching experience; two semesters as a half-time teaching assistant in graduate school meet this requirement.
Qualifications also include good communication skills with both students and colleagues; the ability to teach introductory undergraduate physics lectures and laboratories; interest in and commitment to undergraduate education.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Teach introductory-level physics and/or physical science, including labs.
DEPARTMENT INFORMATION:
The Engineering Physics Department (http://www3.uwplatt.edu/engineering-physics), in the College of Engineering, Mathematics, and Science, has eight full-time tenure/tenure track positions and two full-time academic staff. The department offers an undergraduate degree in Engineering Physics and a B.S. degree in Microsystems and Nanomaterials. The department also serves programs in engineering, science, technology, business, and education. Yearly enrollments in the service physics courses are about 800 in calculus-based physics, 200 in algebra-based physics, 50 in astronomy, and 50 in physical science. Introductory physics classrooms are "studio" style to support interactive teaching and learning.

The University of Wisconsin-Platteville, founded in 1866, enrolls about 8,000 students in 42 baccalaureate and 6 master's programs. Responsibilities: The Physics Department at Normandale Community College seeks a qualified candidate to teach a broad spectrum of college Physics and Astronomy courses. Teaching assignments may include evening and weekend classes.
The successful candidate will be expected to:

Minimum Qualifications:
· Master's degree with a major in, physics, astronomy, or astronomy, or with 24 graduate quarter/16 semester credits in, physics, astronomy, or astronomy which would apply to the major.

Preferred Qualifications:
· Ph.D. in physics, astrophysics, astronomy or a closely related discipline.
· Demonstrated commitment to serving a culturally, ethnically and linguistically diverse student body.
· Teaching experience in a variety of physics and astronomy courses.
· Community college experience.
· Experience teaching online and using a course management system, such as Desire 2 Learn, teaching laboratories and active learning principles.
· Experience using Vernier LoggerPro or Pasco DataStudio software, and software for Astronomy labs.
· Experience assessing curriculum and instruction.
· Demonstrate commitment to participating in campus activities, professional development, and high standards.

Date of Employment: August 20, 2014. Classes begin on August 25, 2014 through academic year.

Salary Range: Starting salary (based on education and experience) is expected to range from $37,000 - $68,000. We offer an outstanding benefits package.

3-year Wiess Instructorship at Rice

The Physics and Astronomy Department at Rice University invites applications from recent Ph.D. graduates for an instructorship in physics and astronomy, commencing July/August 2014. This is a non-tenure-track position for a three-year term with the possibility of reappointment for a second three-year term. The teaching load is equivalent to two courses per semester. JOB SUMMARY:
The instructor will have the opportunity to teach a variety of general education physics (algebra and calculus-based) and sophomore-level engineering courses to both science and non-science majors, including associated laboratory sections. The successful candidate should be able to work with students from a wide range of academic preparedness and collaborate with other faculty in professional activities. The normal teaching load is 17 contact hours (3-4 courses) per semester, which will include some evening classes. Candidates must exhibit an effective teaching style that supports a diverse student body.

Qualifications:

CORE COMPETENCIES:
The instructor will demonstrate a commitment to education and a willingness to teach a broad range of both physics and engineering courses (including Statics, Dynamics, Strength of Materials, and Circuit Analysis) in the College’s general education and engineering transfer programs. This full-time faculty member is also responsible for preparing and delivering instruction for 21st century learners and assessing student learning outcomes as appropriate to ensure academic quality. The candidate will be an engaged learning facilitator/instructor who will utilize a range of teaching and learning strategies to foster active learning and student success, which contributes to the fulfillment of the College's strategic goals. The instructor is expected to participate in activities or on committees that contribute to success of students.
REQUIRED QUALIFCIATIONS:
Master's Degree in Physics or Engineering or a related field. Demonstration of a commitment to community college goals and philosophy. Must communicate effectively in spoken and written English.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor’s degree in the complementary field (Physics or Engineering) highly desirable, along with a strong mathematical background. Community college teaching experience preferred. Prior experience in development of curricula in physics and/or engineering at the community college level is strongly recommended. Background or industrial experience in practical aspects of engineering, while not requires, is also strongly recommended. Applicants should be willing to teach using alternative delivery methods.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Sufficient content knowledge within the teaching discipline to effectively teach students what they must learn.
WORKLOAD SUMMARY:
Ability to stand and lecture for extended periods of time.

1-year Position at Berea College, KY

The Physics Program at Berea College invites applications for a one-year position at the Assistant Professor level to begin August 2014. The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. in physics, be an experimentalist, possess a strong commitment to undergraduate liberal arts education, and be skilled in the ability to actively engage undergraduate students in research. Previous college-level teaching experience is strongly preferred. Teaching responsibilities may include a variety of undergraduate physics courses at all levels of the curriculum as well as contributions to the General Education Program of the College.

The Physics Program includes three full-time faculty members, is home to the 3-2 Pre-Engineering program, and graduates an average of three physics majors per year. The faculty at Berea College is dedicated to excellent undergraduate teaching and robust research, particularly with students. Facilities include an x-ray diffraction lab, Mössbauer spectrometer, time-of-flight mass spectrometer, magnetometer, and fully equipped labs for both optics and electronics.
