JOB SUMMARY:The instructor will have the opportunity to teach a variety of general education physics (algebra and calculus-based) and sophomore-level engineering courses to both science and non-science majors, including associated laboratory sections. The successful candidate should be able to work with students from a wide range of academic preparedness and collaborate with other faculty in professional activities. The normal teaching load is 17 contact hours (3-4 courses) per semester, which will include some evening classes. Candidates must exhibit an effective teaching style that supports a diverse student body.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
• Actively supporting course and program assessment
• Contributing to departmental, campus and college efforts to ensure student success
• Promote the philosophy, mission, and vision of Kishwaukee College
• Provide engaging, enthusiastic, and student-centered teaching to community college students
• Establish a professional classroom atmosphere that encourages mutual respect and civil engagement
• Contribute to a collegial, collaborative, and positive attitude to the college campus
• Understand and convey the essentials of the course discipline that students should master
• Maintain high academic standards while demonstrating equitability and fairness
• Work successfully and productively in a team environment with full time faculty
• Perform the necessary duties of an instructor to ensure quality instruction
- Establish productive and supportive communication with students
- Prepare the course syllabus following the college-approved format and course content
- Be organized and conduct classes in accordance with the published class schedule
- Evaluate student progress through regularly scheduled assessments/exams
- Promptly return graded work to students and maintain student grade records
- Maintain a required office schedule
•Participate in professional development activities
•Assist in curriculum development as necessary
•Advise students as appropriate
Qualifications:
CORE COMPETENCIES:The instructor will demonstrate a commitment to education and a willingness to teach a broad range of both physics and engineering courses (including Statics, Dynamics, Strength of Materials, and Circuit Analysis) in the College’s general education and engineering transfer programs. This full-time faculty member is also responsible for preparing and delivering instruction for 21st century learners and assessing student learning outcomes as appropriate to ensure academic quality. The candidate will be an engaged learning facilitator/instructor who will utilize a range of teaching and learning strategies to foster active learning and student success, which contributes to the fulfillment of the College's strategic goals. The instructor is expected to participate in activities or on committees that contribute to success of students.
REQUIRED QUALIFCIATIONS:
Master's Degree in Physics or Engineering or a related field. Demonstration of a commitment to community college goals and philosophy. Must communicate effectively in spoken and written English.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor’s degree in the complementary field (Physics or Engineering) highly desirable, along with a strong mathematical background. Community college teaching experience preferred. Prior experience in development of curricula in physics and/or engineering at the community college level is strongly recommended. Background or industrial experience in practical aspects of engineering, while not requires, is also strongly recommended. Applicants should be willing to teach using alternative delivery methods.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Sufficient content knowledge within the teaching discipline to effectively teach students what they must learn.
WORKLOAD SUMMARY:
Ability to stand and lecture for extended periods of time.
