Utah’s Hogle Zoo’s is announcing the opening of a full-time position, as the Primary Animal Keeper – African Savanna – Lion Habitat, within the Animal Care Department. The African Savanna exhibit is a modern, mixed species exhibit that includes facilities that allow for advanced animal husbandry practices, and new high-quality guest encounters centered on the Zoo’s conservation and education programs. Scheduled to open in spring 2014, the African Savanna will be the largest animal habitat at the Zoo.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The Zoo is seeking a highly-qualified animal care specialist to assist with implementing quarantine procedures, daily care of a multi-male lion breeding group, introductions for housing and breeding purposes, veterinary procedures, exhibit maintenance, animal demonstrations, addressing the media, education programs, as well as, the care and husbandry of a mixed hoof-stock/bird habitat, and other animals or areas as needed.
Qualifications and Skills

Applicants must be able to work effectively in a strong team environment, foster positive interactions with guests and other Zoo departments, serve as an ambassador for the Zoo and liaison to the Association of Zoos and Aquariums in regards to animal programs, and possess a strong commitment to wildlife conservation, animal welfare, and providing a high-quality guest experience.
Excellent writing and public speaking skills are necessary.
At least 5-years paid experience working with large cats in a zoo is required.
There is a strong expectation of experience in operant conditioning and training techniques and ability to uphold high enrichment standards.
Degree in life sciences, biology, zoology or related field is preferred.
Applicant must be able to work under diverse and variable weather conditions and be able to lift over 60 pounds without injury, and bend, stoop, jump, and stretch.
Good driving record required.
Salt Lake City, Utah, is the gateway for outstanding outdoor activities with world-class skiing less than 30 minutes away and more than 20 National Parks and monuments within a few hours’ drive – this area is ideal for nature lovers!

The Angkor Centre for Conservation of Biodiversity (ACCB) is currently looking for a Volunteer Keeper. This is a challenging but rewarding position for a highly dedicated and motivated individual with a keen interest in rehabilitation of native fauna and captive breeding of endangered species. The work is varied and hours also vary dependent on work.

The volunteer keeper reports to the Head Keeper and overall to the Project Manager and works as part of the animal keeping team.

Animal Keeper Internships




2 x Animal Keeper Internships (unpaid)
on either Gorilla or Elephant Section


Situated near Canterbury in Kent, Howletts Wild Animal Park works in conjunction with The Aspinall Foundation; a charity committed to conservation and the reintroduction of captive bred species back into their natural habitats.

We have 2 exciting placements available for enthusiastic individuals wanting to gain valuable zoo animal keeping experience through working alongside keepers and benefiting from being involved in our ground breaking reintroduction projects. There is one placement available for the Gorilla Section and one for the Elephant Section, not a combination of the two.

We are looking for candidates who are willing to commit to a 6 month term and be willing and available to come in from 8am to 5pm, 5 days per week including weekends.

These placements are physically demanding positions so candidates must be physically fit, self motivated and have a genuine interest in conservation and zoo animal care. A valid driving licence is required and please be aware that unfortunately we are unable to offer accommodation.

The internships are unpaid and would benefit those already qualified in conservation or animal care and looking for further specialist zoo experience.

Port Lympne Wild Animal Park near Hythe, Kent is recruiting for an Animal Keeper to work on our Primate Sections in the park.

  The position requires an enthusiastic, self motivated person with experience of working within a mainstream wild animal collection. You must possess good all round animal husbandry skills and be enthusiastic in contributing to the enrichment of the primate species around the park.

This is a physically demanding position so candidates must be physically fit, self motivated and have a genuine interest in conservation and wildlife. A valid driving licence is essential and an animal related qualification or relevant experience would be advantageous.

This is a full time permanent position. Working 40 hours a week, five days out of seven 8.00am to 5.00pm possibly including weekends and bank holidays.

Twycross Zoo – East Midland Zoological Society (TZEMS), the World Primate Centre, holds a large variety of primates – every type of great ape (gorilla, chimpanzee, bonobo, orang-utan) plus a range of other primates including gibbons, lemurs, callitrichids, cebids and guenons to name a few!  We have impressive breeding records for many of these species and recent changes to husbandry practices has enabled more natural groupings and enclosure modifications. We have more to do!

We are going through an exciting period of change as this zoo develops and so are looking for dynamic, knowledgeable individuals to help lead the teams forward.

We have a vacancy for a keeper on the Great Apes section. The section manages all great ape taxa including chimpanzees, bonobos, orang utans and gorillas.  This is a key role which will involve working on the section, covering all areas of animal husbandry including feeding, cleaning, training and record keeping; as well as interacting with the zoo visitors.

We are seeking an enthusiastic, high performing individual with an interest in zoo animal management. You must be a good team worker with a positive outlook and have excellent communication skills.  A minimum of 2 years zoo keeping experience with great apes, and an animal-related qualification, such as the BIAZA approved ANCMZA or DZMAA, would be advantageous. 

The role is full time, including weekend duties on a rota system. Salary is paid monthly.  We provide uniform and 31 days holiday per annum.

Dublin Zoo holds the prestigious position of being ‘Ireland’s Number One Fee Paying Family Attraction’ having welcomed in excess of 1 million visitors in 2012.

We are currently seeking a zoo professional for the position of ‘Keeper’ within Dublin Zoo. The ideal candidate will be highly motivated and passionate about wildlife, with the skills required to communicate this passion and knowledge directly to our visitors. 

He/she must demonstrate an understanding and knowledge of modern zoo practices in animal husbandry, diets and environmental enrichment, as well as an understanding and knowledge of research, conservation and health and safety practices.

The successful candidate should have a minimum of 3 years experience working with animals in a Keeper role in a Zoological Garden and/or Wildlife Park and hold a Diploma in Animal Management from Sparsholt College, or equivalent, or be prepared to complete this course within a pre-agreed timeframe.

Applicants who have not yet achieved the above required qualification, if successful, will be considered in a Trainee Keeper capacity until the relevant qualification is achieved within a pre-agreed timeframe.

This part-time (16 hours per week) position involves working with a dedicated team of animal care professionals to maintain the animal collection at Brooklands Zoo within the internationally renowned Pukekura Park.
Applicants for the position should preferably have or be working towards a recognised animal husbandry qualification, and have:

Job Description
Position title: Keeper Brooklands Zoo
Reports to: Head Keeper Brooklands Zoo
Purpose of the role
Keepers provide quality animal husbandry and visitor services and contribute to the effective and efficient operation of Brooklands Zoo. The position requires a commitment to meeting the needs of the facility and its customers by performing a variety of tasks associated with animal management, visitor services, carrying out those duties and responsibilities as defined in this position description or any other reasonable request from the employer which contributes to achieving the continued success of the Brooklands Zoo.
Key relationships
Internal: Parks field staff, other Council staff, particularly within the Community Services Teams.
External: Contractors, customers and users.
Key responsibilities

Customer service provision (five per cent of job, high importance)
Means:
• Provide services that are effective, efficient, consistent and focused on anticipating and exceeding customer expectations.
• Implement new methods, processes, equipment and technologies in conjunction with other teams to improve customer service, satisfaction, efficiency and effectiveness.
• Provide the right information to ensure that customers understand requirements and rationale for these or refer customers to Customer Support.
• Ensure requests are answered in a timely manner and meet the performance expectations set.
• Escalate requests to appropriate technical areas, community assets or area of expertise defined in service level agreement to meet customer needs.
• Maximise technology to ensure consistency and accuracy of information.
• Provide resolution to customers and look for opportunities to improve services.
• Undertake specified projects as required and agreed with the Assistant Curator Brooklands Zoo and Head Keeper.

• Carry out all work safely.
• Report all accidents and near miss within the same day.
• Ability to work within a seven day roster.

• To carry out general husbandry for the animals in your care.
 • To carry out environmental enrichment.
• Maintain high standards of welfare and husbandry on your section. 
• Ensure equipment is maintained to maximise usage.
• Report any damage breakage or loss within the same day.
• Provide information/report to maintain relevant records.
• Provide information to customers and other relevant stakeholders as required.
• Comply with all in-house rules, policies and regulation of Parks, NPDC and Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) Zoo standards.
• Work and interact with others in a manner of good conduct.
• Record timesheet codes, areas and times accurately.
• Keep detailed animal husbandry/behavioural records.
• Follow processes listed in the Brooklands Zoo Containment Manual.
• Liaise with the Head Keepers and/or Assistant Curator Brooklands Zoo regarding daily operations.
• Work and interact with work experience students and volunteers when required.

• Effectiveness, efficiency and sensitivity of operational work is achieved.
• Work is carried out safely in conjunction with all NPDC and Parks health and safety policies and in line with the relevant health and safety and environment legislation.
• Accurate information is collected and provided for record keeping.

• Pushing a wheelie full of substrate for up to 50 metres.
• Carrying buckets up to 20 metres to and from enclosures. 
• Ability to move for long periods of time.
• Ability to climb ladders and work at heights up to three metres from the ground.
• Absence of OOS.
• Absence of debilitating allergies and sensitivity to materials used for cleaning animals and their homes.
 • Normal visual acuity and ability to hear.
• Able to handle offensive matter.
• Ability to attach implements and to use them.
• Ability to work in all weather conditions.

Qualifications and knowledge
• Full manual drivers’ licence for relevant vehicle classes.
• Relevant animal husbandry qualification or working towards a relevant qualification.

Experience
• Field experience in the care and husbandry of contained animals.

Major challenges
• To support the Assistant Curator Brooklands Zoo to deliver professional, efficient and effective services. 
• To participate in operations that are conducted safely within a culture of ‘safety first’.
• Develop personal and professional skills and technical knowledge within the range of Zoo operations.

Scope
• To participate in the delivery of services to meet a high level of performance and customer expectations within the Parks Zoo Team.

Terms and conditions
The general conditions of appointment are set out in the Parks Services Collective Employment Agreement.  The main features and job specific features are set out below:
a) Pay
The pay for the position is $32,332 (85 per cent) to $38,038 (100 per cent) per annum.
b) Hours of Work
The ordinary hours of work shall be up to sixteen hours per week to be worked between 6am and 6pm on any day and to be rostered up to any five of the seven days Monday to Sunday inclusive.
c) Dress
The appointee shall maintain a neat and tidy standard of dress during working hours.
d) Health and Safety
The appointee shall be required to wear appropriate safety equipment as and when necessary and cooperate and participate in the Council’s health and safety programme. Safety equipment will be provided by New Plymouth District Council.
Any applicant canvassing any elected member of the Council or of any community board shall automatically be disqualified from appointment; provided that this shall not preclude any applicant from nominating any such elected member as a referee.

We currently have an exciting opportunity for someone to join our Life Science team as a Keeper on a permanent full time basis (40 hours per week). The successful applicant will be responsible for the daily care of a variety of species and habitats within the Zoo’s animal collection. They will also need to be confident engaging with our visitors.

To be considered for this opportunity you will need to have:

  • Experience in captive animal keeping and daily husbandry.
  • Knowledge of behavioural and environmental enrichment techniques.
  • The ability to work with limited supervision, solve problems and work well in a team environment.
  • The flexibility to work on a roster that includes weekends and public holidays.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills combined with excellent visitor engagement skills.
  • Whilst not essential a National Certificate in Captive Wild Animals or equivalent qualification would be an advantage.
