The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS), a charity founded in 1909, owns and manages Edinburgh Zoo and the Highland Wildlife Park.  The Zoo is the second most popular paying visitor attraction in Scotland, offering an excellent day out to more than 600,000 visitors annually, and has an international reputation for its very active conservation and education programmes.

A vacancy has arisen for an Animal Presenter to work within the Living Collections Department. The role will involve delivery of all aspects of Keeper Experience packages, working within the animal presentations team.  The successful candidate will be required to deliver the Keeper Experience program to a high standard, meeting the needs of the zoo visitors and ensuring high animal welfare.  They will also contribute to the development of the Society in achieving its Mission and Aims.

To operate effectively in this role, it is desirable if you hold the Diploma in the Management of Zoo and Aquarium Animals or equivalent qualification or experience at SVQ 3 or equivalent level. Practical experience in a zoo or animal-related environment is essential and experience of working with a range of animal taxon groups desirable. You must also have up-to-date basic knowledge and understanding of zoo legislation and best practice, along with a sound basis of practical knowledge and skills about good animal management including dietary knowledge. Proven success in animal training or an appropriate qualification in the use of positive reinforcement training is desirable.

You will be an excellent communicator, with proven presentation skills. You will be comfortable working as part of a team and will build strong relationships across the organisation. Customer service will be key to this role and you must have an excellent understanding of the principals involved and how to interact with the public to ensure a memorable experience.

This is a part-time position working 22.5 hrs per week.  The successful candidate must be able to work weekends.  Salary is dependent on experience (£13,500 -17,500 per annum pro-rated)

Resident ECZM Veterinary Surgeon (Based at Edinburgh Zoo – 3 Years Fixed Term Contract)
Reporting to the Head of Veterinary Services, this is a fantastic position within the Society as the Resident Veterinary Surgeon will be trained for over 3 years in preparation for examination by the European College of Zoological Medicine (Zoo Health Management). The successful candidate will be responsible, under direction from the Head of Veterinary Services and/or Head of Living Collections, for overseeing the health and welfare of all animals kept by the RZSS at their two sites, Edinburgh Zoo and the Highland Wildlife Park. This will include preventative health measures and planning, relevant disease testing, quarantine assessment of new animals, suitable treatment of any ill or injured animals, as well as post-mortem examination of deceased animals when this is judged to be of importance to other animals in the collection or as directed by the Head of Veterinary Services.

About You
The ideal candidate will hold a veterinary degree and be a current (or eligible) Member of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons. They should also preferably hold a post graduate veterinary qualification in zoological medicine and have demonstrated experience with zoological collections. In addition, they should be 2 years qualified as a veterinary surgeon and be eligible to practice in the UK. Up to date knowledge of current veterinary techniques and best practice is essential as is the ability to work as part of a team to build effective relationships with colleagues. This role would suit an enthusiastic individual who can demonstrate a quality approach to work.

Chief Executive




The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland, founded in 1909, owns and operates Edinburgh Zoo and the Highland Wildlife Park and manages a variety of programmes dedicated to conservation, education and research domestically and internationally. With a mission to “inspire and excite our visitors with the wonder of living animals, and so to promote the conservation of threatened species and habitats”, it is one of Europe’s leading centres of conservation, and Edinburgh Zoo is one of the UK’s leading visitor attractions, enhanced by the recent arrival of two giant pandas from China. The position of Chief Executive of the Society is therefore one of significant visibility and influence with considerable responsibilities and opportunities.
Reporting to the Board of the Society through the Chair of the Board, the Chief Executive will be responsible for leading the senior management team in the development and management of the Society as a commercially sustainable organisation in pursuit of its charitable aims and objectives.

Person specification

The Chief Executive must be an experienced and successful business manager, an excellent communicator, a strong leader with sound financial skills and the ability to inspire and motivate staff and manage stakeholders. They will require strong commercial skills and be required to have displayed commercial judgement in previous roles. A background of working in a zoological, wildlife or relevant animal environment would be an advantage as would experience in a customer focused organisation. The Chief Executive must be capable of championing the Society’s excellent commercial and charitable aims both within the organisation and in the wider business, conservation and political communities. They should have significant experience at senior management level where they have a proven track record of leading an organisation.

Key Criteria for this role are as follows:

Leadership - the ability to provide strong and authentic leadership in a setting where they have had responsibility for significant budgets and staff numbers and have contributed at the most senior level to the management of a business.

Strategy/Performance - the ability to define the strategy and monitor/evaluate the performance of an organisation, enabling successful delivery of its products and/or services.

Business and Financial acumen – the ability to manage a successful business, identify and exploit appropriate markets, build and maintain market share and manage budgets in excess of £10 million.

Organisational Change - the ability to lead significant organisational change, to embed values and culture appropriate to an organisation with over 100 years’ heritage and with stewardship responsibility to ensure successful sustainability.

Constructive challenge/Influencing - the ability to challenge constructively and influence decision-making within a board or team setting.

Stakeholder management – the ability to build relationships with and influence a wide range of stakeholders, from members of the Society to Scottish and UK governments.

Communication – The ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences, with experience of acting in an ambassadorial role.

Conservation– dedication to and empathy with the conservation mission and aims of the Society.

Risk – the ability to effectively assess and analyse risks that could adversely impact on the Society either internally or externally and to develop appropriate controls and monitoring procedures to remove or substantially mitigate significant risks.

Key Responsibilities for this position are as follows:

-Provide vision, leadership, direction, inspiration and motivation for the management, staff and volunteers of the Society

-Ensure that the Society is run in accordance with relevant legislative requirements and good practice, and within its Constitution, applying appropriate levels of corporate governance

-Further the interests of zoos and conservation through promotion of relevant conservation, education and research activities

-Recommend appropriate strategic plans and policies for the future development of the Society to the Board

-Develop, maintain and promote constructive working relationships and effective communications with internal and external stakeholders, in particular the Society’s members

-Create and nurture a successful, dynamic fundraising climate in the Society as a critical component in successfully building up revenue.

Animal Experience Presenter

Job Title – Animal Experience Presenter
Reporting to the Lead Animal Presenter, the main responsibilities of this role are:

Animal Management
• Undertake delivery of all aspects of Keeper Experience packages, whilst ensuring the animal collection is well managed and looked after, ie, animal welfare and natural behaviours are considered first.

Keeper Experience Coordination
• Undertake meet and greet of all customers
• Undertake health and safety induction of all customers
• Liaise with appropriate staff from Animal Dept, Presentation Team and Zoo Vets to prepare and deliver animal “events” to the customer
• Prepare monthly report on the progress of the Keeper Experience packages for the Lead Animal Presenter in the initial stages of the project and then as agreed to ensure the service develops and progresses commercially

Other
• Continue with professional development where relevant
• Develop the package of events and experiences as appropriate with proposals and accompanying business case


About you
