ZooKeeper Apprenticeship



Apprenticeship

We have a very exciting opportunity for an Apprentice keeper to join our Zoo Animal Management (ZAM) team and acquire specialist on the job training. This vacancy is open to those aged 18-24 due to government funding restrictions and provisions under the Young People at Work regulations.

The apprentice keeper will work to a high standard under the direction of the Head Keeper. The ZAM department care for the main collection of animals at the zoo and the successful candidate will assist in caring for a variety of domestic and exotic species whilst also providing support for the rest of their respective team where required.

No prior zoo or animal husbandry experience for the post of apprentice is required as full in house training will be given, although candidates will be expected to demonstrate a keen interest in zoo animal husbandry. The successful candidate will also be expected to achieve an NVQ Level 2 in animal care during the course of their apprenticeship which is expected to last between 12-14 months.

Hours: Average 40 hours a week

Salary: £2.65 per hour - for the first year, rising to minimum wage thereafter

Qualified Animal Keeper


Qualified Animal Keeper at Banham Zoo



About the role:

The successful candidate will work under the leadership of our Lead Qualified Keepers and Head Keeper, providing the best possible care and management for our diverse collection of animals. Taxa include primates, felids, canids, large hoofstock including giraffe, birds and other small mammals.



Flexibility is key to the successful operation of the animal department as a whole and Qualified Animal Keepers are expected to be able to provide cover across a range of species


Key Accountabilities:


Provide the highest level of husbandry according to the needs and requirements of the animals in your care.


Effectively handle animals to minimise stress and risk of injury to all involved


Assist in the supervision and development of staff responsible to the role to address staff learning and development needs and promote a positive working environment.


Ensure a positive impression of yourself and the company is presented to all customers (internal and external) at all times to reflect the quality of the organisation.


Monitor compliance within the department of policies and procedures in relation to administration and health & safety to ensure they are appropriately followed.


Continuously develop yourself through appropriate learning and development activities as agreed by line management in order to deliver excellence.




About you:

You are expected to have worked in a zoo environment for at least 4 years. You will possess the ANCMZA/DMZA and have experience working with some of the taxa identified above. The successful candidates will be able to demonstrate excellent communication skills.



You will have an understanding and interest in modern zoo animal management, including animal enrichment and training using operant conditioning methods.



A full driving licence is essential and candidates are expected to be computer literate with a reasonable understanding of Microsoft Word and ARKS/ZIMS.


About us:

Based at Banham Zoo you will work an average 40 hour week with every third weekend off, however, working hours will be flexible and include bank holidays and occasional evenings.
Some additional weekend cover will be required to provide holiday cover.

Salary and benefits:



The salary for this post is £15,500 per annum.

About the role:

The successful candidate will lead and inspire our existing team of 19 keepers, overseeing the care and management of our diverse collection of animals. Taxa include primates, felids, canids, large hoofstock including giraffe, birds and other small mammals.



It is envisaged that this role will be for an initial period lasting no less than 12 months.



Flexibility is key to the successful operation of the animal department as a whole and the Head Keeper is expected to provide cover and assistance to the Animal Manager in all aspects of the management of the department. This is a supervisory role and there is a significant amount of administrative work involved.


Key Objectives:


Ensure and maintain the highest level of care for animals, enclosures and surroundings.



Ensure effective day to day supervision and motivation of the keeping staff.



Actively promote training and development of keeping staff.



Manage and supervise keeping staff and maintain adequate staffing levels.



Report to the Animal Manager on all areas of operation within the department



Understand, operate and ensure that all keepers work in accordance with the Zoo Health and Safety Policy and procedures.



Actively participate in effective interdepartmental coordination and communication.



About you:

You are expected to have worked in a zoo environment for at least 10 years and currently be working in a supervisory position. You will possess the ANCMZA/DMZA or an equivalent qualification and have extensive experience with some of the taxa identified above. The successful candidates will be able to demonstrate excellent communication skills and a proven ability to motivate and manage staff reporting to this position.



You will have a through understanding and interest in modern zoo animal management, including animal enrichment and training using operant conditioning methods.



A full driving licence is essential; candidates should also be in possession of a firearms licence or be in a position to acquire such a licence.



You will be computer literate with a excellent understanding of Microsoft Word and ARKS/ZIMS. A working knowledge of Excel, PowerPoint are also essential and Microsoft Access is desirable.

The salary for this post is £25,000 per annum.

VOLUNTEER CO-ORDINATOR


VOLUNTEER CO-ORDINATOR


A rare and very exciting opportunity has arisen for a new appointment as a full time Volunteer Co-ordinator for our charity “Friends of Banham Zoo”, based at Banham Zoo.

 We are looking for a highly motivated person, with superb people management skills, who can lead a team of volunteers to assist in the day to day activities of our award winning zoo in all its various departments.

You will be expected to organise rotas, train and develop the team and have a real understanding of customer service.  There may also be a requirement to manage and run our Charity Shop, and support the fund raising events run by the Charity.

The successful candidate will ideally have previous experience of working in a similar environment and work well under pressure.

 Flexibility is a key factor as the Zoo is open 7 days a week, and you may have to work occasional weekend days and Bank Holidays as this is essential to the role. 

This is a full time role working 37.5 hours per week with a salary of c£18,000 per annum, dependant upon experience.

Animal Trainer and Presenter
BANHAM ZOO, NORFOLK


We have an exciting opportunity for an additional Animal Trainer and Presenter to join our team. This is a full time position (based on an average 40 hr week).

The successful candidate should possess and be able to demonstrate animal training experience relevant to the zoo’s Bird of Prey and Amazing Animal displays and be familiar with positive operant conditioning. In addition to this, and a key requirement for the role, are excellent communication and public presentation skills.

Working under the direction of the Head of Animal Training and Presentations, you will add an extra dimension to the already high standard of training and presentation achieved by the department. An animal care related qualification/s would be an advantage but more important is the desire to interact both formally and informally with our guests at every opportunity, providing an additional educational experience that enhances their visit.

Salary is dependent on experience.
