Flamingo Land zoological department is looking for a dynamic and knowledgeable Head Keeper to join our team.  Flamingo Land is one of the leading tourist attractions in the UK, attracting more than 1.4 million visitors each year.  The zoo is in an exciting phase of development that has recently seen the creation of a number of themed zoogeographic areas and the development of the education, conservation and research departments.  The position available is for a Head Keeper to supervise a diverse section of the zoo consisting of our Carnivore, Primate and Bird areas.

The successful candidate will have experience working in a zoological collection and have passed the Diploma in the Management of Zoo and Aquarium Animals (or equivalent).  The successful candidate will be responsible for daily management of a team of up to five members of staff and will have demonstrable experience of managing people in a working environment as well as knowledge of legislation governing the operation of a zoological collection.  This is a practical position and the successful candidate will be expected to cover these working areas as required.  Therefore, experience of working with carnivores and primates is a priority, whilst knowledge and experience of working with birds would be an advantage.  The successful candidate will be expected to be very personable and able to communicate well with staff and visitors, including delivering public talks. The successful candidate will also be enthusiastic and a good team player.  Flamingo Land encourages personal development of all zoo staff through participation in ABWAK symposia and workshops, attending Taxon Working Groups, attending zoo conferences and managing studbooks.  Members of the zoo team also have the opportunity to visit our conservation project in Tanzania.

The position is available on a full time basis and includes 30 days paid annual leave. The candidate will be expected to work weekends and late evenings as required.

Salary range: £18,700 - £21,000.

Angkor Centre for Conservation of Biodiversity, Cambodia

The Angkor Centre for Conservation of Biodiversity (ACCB) was established in 2003 by Münster Zoo and the Zoological Society for the Conservation of Species and Populations (ZGAP). It is the first nature conservation centre in Cambodia, located on 25 ha of land in the Phnom Kulen National Park, ca. 40 km north of Siem Reap and the temples of Angkor Wat. The goals of the ACCB are the rehabilitation of confiscated, mainly globally threatened wildlife and the conservation breeding of selected species, in combination with environmental education and capacity building of local communities and an expanding in-situ conservation programme.

The ACCB is currently looking to fill the temporary position of Head Keeper. This is a challenging post in a demanding environment suitable for a highly dedicated and motivated individual.

Main duties and responsibilities:

  1. Assist with the daily operation of the centre and the further development of the project.
  2. Carry out all aspects of animal husbandry (assistance with wildlife confiscations, appropriate rehabilitation and release) and building and maintenance work as required.
  3. Organise the daily routine and refine husbandry protocols animal stock of mammals, birds and reptiles in accordance with the centre management.
  4. Training and supervision of Cambodian animal keepers and site support staff.
  5. Assist with education work and field research, and the preparation of project reports, proposals and other administrative tasks as required.

Requirements:

  1. Experience in animal husbandry with a broad spectrum of species, but especially advanced knowledge of large water birds (storks, ibis etc.), ideally in a supervisory role.
  2. Good command of English (spoken and written).
  3. Excellent organisational and communication skills and ability to multi-task.
  4. Good practical skills and computer literacy.
  5. Full clean driving licence.
  6. Physically fit and able to work in a hot and humid climate.
  7. Ability to live under simple conditions in a rural and isolated area.

Conditions / remuneration:

The post is temporary with a minimum of one year (including a probation period of three months) and the possibility to extend the contract.

Travel expenses at the beginning and the end of the contract will be covered. Free shared accommodation at ACCB and a salary to cover living expenses (650 USD) will be provided.

Preference will be given to candidates indicating that they are prepared to stay for longer periods. The contract will be offered on a compensatory volunteer basis, not as permanent staff of Münster Zoo. Therefore, health or social insurance contributions will not be covered.

Expected starting date: 1st April 2013, preferably sooner

About the role:

The successful candidate will lead and inspire our existing team of 19 keepers, overseeing the care and management of our diverse collection of animals. Taxa include primates, felids, canids, large hoofstock including giraffe, birds and other small mammals.



It is envisaged that this role will be for an initial period lasting no less than 12 months.



Flexibility is key to the successful operation of the animal department as a whole and the Head Keeper is expected to provide cover and assistance to the Animal Manager in all aspects of the management of the department. This is a supervisory role and there is a significant amount of administrative work involved.


Key Objectives:


Ensure and maintain the highest level of care for animals, enclosures and surroundings.



Ensure effective day to day supervision and motivation of the keeping staff.



Actively promote training and development of keeping staff.



Manage and supervise keeping staff and maintain adequate staffing levels.



Report to the Animal Manager on all areas of operation within the department



Understand, operate and ensure that all keepers work in accordance with the Zoo Health and Safety Policy and procedures.



Actively participate in effective interdepartmental coordination and communication.



About you:

You are expected to have worked in a zoo environment for at least 10 years and currently be working in a supervisory position. You will possess the ANCMZA/DMZA or an equivalent qualification and have extensive experience with some of the taxa identified above. The successful candidates will be able to demonstrate excellent communication skills and a proven ability to motivate and manage staff reporting to this position.



You will have a through understanding and interest in modern zoo animal management, including animal enrichment and training using operant conditioning methods.



A full driving licence is essential; candidates should also be in possession of a firearms licence or be in a position to acquire such a licence.



You will be computer literate with a excellent understanding of Microsoft Word and ARKS/ZIMS. A working knowledge of Excel, PowerPoint are also essential and Microsoft Access is desirable.


About us:

Based at Banham Zoo you will work an average 40 hour week with alternate weekends off, however, working hours will be flexible and include bank holidays and occasional evenings.
Some additional weekend cover will be required to provide holiday cover.

Salary and benefits:



The salary for this post is £25,000 per annum.
