Head Keeper

Head Keeper Vacancy
Flamingo Land Zoo
Closing date: 10th June 2013

Flamingo Land zoological department is looking for a dynamic and knowledgeable Head Keeper to join our team.  Flamingo Land is one of the leading tourist attractions in the UK, attracting more than 1.4 million visitors each year.  The zoo is in an exciting phase of development that has recently seen the creation of a number of themed zoogeographic areas and the development of the education, conservation and research departments.  The position available is for a Head Keeper to supervise a diverse section of the zoo consisting of our Carnivore, Primate and Bird areas.

The successful candidate will have experience working in a zoological collection and have passed the Diploma in the Management of Zoo and Aquarium Animals (or equivalent).  The successful candidate will be responsible for daily management of a team of up to five members of staff and will have demonstrable experience of managing people in a working environment as well as knowledge of legislation governing the operation of a zoological collection.  This is a practical position and the successful candidate will be expected to cover these working areas as required.  Therefore, experience of working with carnivores and primates is a priority, whilst knowledge and experience of working with birds would be an advantage.  The successful candidate will be expected to be very personable and able to communicate well with staff and visitors, including delivering public talks. The successful candidate will also be enthusiastic and a good team player.  Flamingo Land encourages personal development of all zoo staff through participation in ABWAK symposia and workshops, attending Taxon Working Groups, attending zoo conferences and managing studbooks.  Members of the zoo team also have the opportunity to visit our conservation project in Tanzania.

The position is available on a full time basis and includes 30 days paid annual leave. The candidate will be expected to work weekends and late evenings as required.

Salary range: £18,700 - £21,000.

Interviews will take place during the week beginning the 10th June 2013.
