ANIMAL CARE ADMINISTRATOR

ANIMAL CARE ADMINISTRATOR
 
Accountable to the General Curator, this position is directly responsible for providing general administrative support to the animal care department. This includes providing support to the Director; Animal Care, Conservation & Research. 
 
Responsibilities:
·         Provides administrative support to the Director; Animal Care, Conservation & Research; this includes arranging travel arrangements, drafting correspondence, schedule management, etc. 
·         Provides administrative support to animal care managers/curators.
·         Oversees staff uniform requirements and distribution. 
·         Coordinates the activities of a variety of meetings.  This includes confirming agenda and distributing minutes.  Specifically, the point of contact for Labour Management meetings.
·         Assists department with various items such as tracking of invoices, correspondence, product location and ordering. 
·         Assists with data entry: animal records, morbidity, mortality and pathology records.
·         Assists curators and managers by providing project assistance (data entry, CAZA, NARG program, filing, photocopying and other related duties).
·         Assists with budget management including data entry and invoice tracking. 
·         Provides reception coverage for front desk.
·         Maintains confidentiality.  
·         Other tasks and projects as required.
 
Qualifications:
¨       Graduate of post-secondary institution or equivalent degree
·         2-5 years experience in an administrative/technical/professional function.
·         Proven ability to work independently and set priorities.
·         Excellent communication (written and oral), organizational, interpersonal and research skills.
·         Strong computer skills, including MS Word and Excel.
·         Understands the importance of diplomacy and confidentiality. 
·         Professional and mature demeanour.
·         Working knowledge of zoo terminology is considered an asset.
 
Physical Demands: 
·         Sedentary position.
·         Requires extensive use of computer.
·         Some mobility on grounds required.
·         Must be available to work weekends when required.

AREA CURATOR, ANIMAL CARE
 
Accountable to the General Curator, the Area Curator is responsible for the daily management of the animals, personnel, facilities and programs of the area. The successful candidate will be required to manageareas that may include mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fishes and invertebrates.
 
Responsibilities:
·         Oversee animal handling events, including animal shipments.
·         Assist in the planning and coordination of standard operating procedures.
·         Assist in planning and implementation of special projects, minor renovations and improvements in the section.
·         Ensures compliance with standard operating procedures and ensures the standard operating procedures are conducive to maintaining the highest possible standards of human health and safety and animal welfare in line with known best practice.
·         Interview and train employees: plan, assign and direct work: appraise performance: manage employees; address complaints and resolve problems; ensuring compliance with union contract.
·         Works with other departments to help develop, plan and implement educational programs, publicity, graphics and other support services for the section.
·         Initiates necessary requests for maintenance and horticultural work within the section.
·         Acts as a liaison with the veterinary team to coordinate animal treatments, exams and the preventative medicine program.
·         Acts as zone manager in other areas when other managers are away.
·         Works with Animal Management team to ensure animal exhibits and enclosures meet or exceed minimum AZA & CAZA accreditation standards.
·         Reviews and updates animal management/husbandry protocols ensuring established husbandry standards are met.
·         Ensures accurate, current records are kept on each animal and exhibit.
·         Coordinates behind the scenes tours, after hour’s events and animal treatments.
·         Manages budget with in consultation with General Curator.
·         Other duties as assigned.
 
Qualifications:
·         Minimum of 7 years of animal management experience preferably in an accredited institution
·         5 years of experience in direct staff supervision.  Experience managing a unionized workforce would be considered an asset.
·         Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Zoology, Ecology or related field
·         Must be able to establish and maintain an effective rapport with all levels of management, employees and park guests.
·         Must be able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
·         Must have good observational skills.
·         Some computer skills in MS office.
·         The position requires inclusion on the zoo’s tactical response team. (Possess or eligible to possess firearm PAL document).
·         Possess or able to acquire a Class 5 Alberta drivers license
 
Physical Demands: 
  • Involves outdoor work and heavy lifting
  • Must be able to walk, stand, sit, kneel, stoop, crawl, twist, reach above head, pull, bend, climb stairs and ladders, and carry up to 50lbs.
  • Exposure to fauna and pungent odours.
  • Must be able to work in inclement weather.
  • Working on weekends and statutory holidays will be required.

General Curator, Animal Care



Accountable to the Director, Animal Care, Conservation & Research, this position is responsible for the management of the animal collection, personnel, facilities and programs of the animal care areas of the zoo.



Responsibilities:

  • Provides daily direction and supervision to Curators.
  • Ensures animal enclosures and day to day standards exceed minimum AZA accreditation standards.
  • Ensures accurate, current records are kept on each animal and exhibit.
  • Looks for opportunities to improve and streamline procedures, processes and documentation.
  • Responsible for the preparation and monitoring of yearly budget in consultation with the Director, Animal Care & Research, ensuring financial targets are achieved.
  • Involved in animal collection planning, and animal acquisitions and dispositions; assisting in exhibit design.
  • Participates in AZA and other professional organizations.
  • Involved in developing and maintaining Institutional Collection Plans for each species in the zoo.
  • Accountable for the development and implementation of standards and best practices in animal husbandry.
  • Oversees Emergency Response Team activities.
  • Accountable for the oversight and consistent implementation of the Calgary Zoo Animal Care Training Program.
  • Works collaboratively with other departments and zones in the design and delivery of superior customer experience.
  • Liaisons with Communications department and completes media interviews as required.
  • Ensures compliance with health, safety and environmental legislation and regulation as well as Calgary Zoo policies and procedures.
  • Complies with collective agreement, Zoo policy or relevant legislation in the management of staff.
  • Other duties as assigned.



Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree in Biology, Zoology, Ecology, Veterinary science, or experience in related field.
  • 10 plus years of animal management experience with a minimum of 5 years of direct animal management in an accredited institution
  • 8+ years of experience in direct staff supervision.
  • Experience managing a unionized workforce would be considered an asset.
  • Demonstrated experience in sourcing, initiating, and facilitating animal transfers.
  • Exceptional problem solving, analytical skills, accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Expertise in leading and implementing business change.
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills in a team environment.
  • Self-starter, skilled at proactively identifying areas for improvement.
  • Ability to interact effectively with employees at all levels of the organization, specifically within the Animal Care department.
  • Class 5 Alberta Drivers License.



Physical Demands of Position:

  • Daily ongrounds mobility required, some heavy lifting requirements, working on weekends and statutory holidays may be required.
